| Black/blackened Metal Recs
Daily Sputnik trolling and the book "Lord of Chaos" have gotten me into black metal, but it's quite the esoteric genre. My preference is riff-centric, accessible BM, especially blackened death or thrash. I've given most of the classics a spin, like "In the Nightside Eclipse", "A Blaze in the Northern Sky", and "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" so I'm looking for something besides the standards from the second wave of early 90's. | 1 | | Dissection Storm of the Light's Bane
Virtually flawless and my favorite black metal recording thus far. Dissection were able to craft a melodically evil album without succumbing to the genre's cliches. | 2 | | Ulver Bergtatt
Garm's vocals on this album are absolutely transcendent. | 3 | | Burzum Filosofem
Unfortunately, a very heavily front loaded album, but Varg effortlessly perfects the under produced sound and atmosphere that many of his peers bastardized. | 4 | | Agalloch The Mantle
Not a true BM album, but manages to extract the best qualities of the genre and add them to their post-metal sound. | 5 | | Windir Arntor
Folkiest black metal I've listened to. | 6 | | Absu Absu
Fast as hell with delicious riffage; I need more of this. | 7 | | Altar of Plagues White Tomb | 8 | | Dimmu Borgir Any
Band doesn't do it for me, later stuff is way too much cheese | |

08.20.09 | Blazebirth Hall has a slew of amazing underrated black metal bands. Like Forest, Branikald, and Raven Dark. The Eastern scene has awesome bands in general. I second Grand belial's Key, and Destroyer 666. Also add Negative Plane, Megiddo, and especially Arckanum for riff centric madness. | fatguymercenary
08.23.09 | you prob no them but 'Vreid' (consists of 3 Windir members) are a good option. you also might like 'Iskald'. |
