Sooper Belated Best Of 08

In other news, Brand New is gonna be Best of 09. I can already feel it.
1 The Gaslight Anthem
The 59 Sound

I have never in my life heard an album that evokes this much powerful imagery and emotion at once. Seriously best of 08. Every song is perfect.
2Underoath
Lost In The Sound Of Separation

Best metal album I've heard since The Always Open Mouth. If this is what people get out of belief in God, I almost wish I had the conviction for religion. Too Bright To See Too Loud To Hear is so epic it hurts.
3The Tallest Man On Earth
Shallow Grave

So many things about this album remind me of 2007's masterpiece, Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago. But there's something that keeps this truly original and powerful. The Gardener just might be the song of the year.
4Dir en grey
Uroboros

After the average (while not bad, pretty meh) previous album, I was expecting this to be a catastrophe. Instead, Dir en grey pumped out the best record of their long career. Vinushka pretty much destroys all their previous songs.

It's Not Me, It's You

Favourite post-rock album ever. That's all there really is to say. The Day Shift is perfection.
6Thursday/Envy
Thursday/Envy

Thursday's best music to date, mixing their above-average post-hardcore with a newfound appreciation of post-rock. On the other hand, Envy deliver their best song ever, with the brilliant crescendo in An Umbrella Fallen Into Fiction.
7 Thrice
The Alchemy Index Vol. III & IV: Air and Earth

Yes, half of everyone scoffs at The Alchemy Index. However, Air has some true power, and Earth is perhaps their best disc yet. I would have to set Come All You Weary as my career-favourite Thrice song.
8Cynic
Traced In Air

Yeah yeah yeah, defined the genre before it's time, whatever. All that matters is the brilliant combination of technical metal and jazzy post-rock that is this album. The King Of Those Who Know is a masterpiece.
9 Amanda Palmer
Who Killed Amanda Palmer

Coming out of the fun cabaret-punk of The Dresden Dolls, Amanda Palmer released an album with some of the most inspiringly sad songs I've ever heard. The best, in particular, being Runs In The Family.
10 A Silver Mt. Zion
13 Blues For Thirteen Moons

This is a weird album. Too annoying and heavy for post-rock, but thats the closest I can get to a genre for this thing. It's hard to like, but once it clicks, it's amazing. Blindblindblind is the song that did me in.
