| Listen To These!
These are some albums that you might've missed that you should really, really look into. And I do mean right now. Do it. Now. Really. | 1 | | Asheru and Blue Black Soon Come...
I have this c.d. on a lot of my lists, and for good reason. In case you don't know, Asheru is the guy who does the theme song for "The Boondocks" cartoon. Many songs on here are laid over jazz beats that wouldn't sound out of place on a Thelonious Monk album. Definitely don't miss the title track, "Truly Unique" or "Dear You." | 2 | | Bodyjar Plastic Skies
Australian Pop-Punk band. If you remember playing the first Tony Hawk Pro Skater, you might also remember their song "Not The Same" from it. That song isn't on this album, but overall I think this one is their strongest. I might liken them to MxPx or Lagwagon in sound. | 3 | | Days Away Mapping An Invisible World
There are seven lists (including this one) that have this album on them, and only one of them WASN'T made by me. It's one of my favorite c.d.'s, and what's better is I got it for free LEGITIMATELY. These guys are no longer around, but from their ashes came the band Good Old War. You should still try and find this album (at the very least, listen to the songs on their PureVolume). | 4 | | Fair The Best Worst-Case Scenario
This is one of the hidden gems of the Tooth & Nail label. Aaron Sprinkle is best known as a producer, but he has an amazing voice, and he lends it for this project. Listen to "Carelessness;" that should be enough to want to grab this album. | 5 | | Mae (M)orning [EP]
Mae's popular enough, but I'm trying to bring this album to more people's attention so that it doesn't fly under the radar this year. It's so damn good, some of Mae's best material in years. And even though it's officially an EP, it has eight original songs and runs for an altogether length of nearly 40 minutes. Good stuff. | 6 | | Nickel Creek This Side
Some great, polished folk. Dual male/female lead vocals throughout; sometimes they trade singing duties, sometimes they go at it together. Also, they lack a drumset, instead using the side of the guitar (or even just the strumming of the strings) as precussion. The result of either is amazing. These guys definitely need to be more known around here. Check out "Smoothie Song" (instrumental), "Speak" or the title track. | 7 | | Sleep Parade Things Can Always Change
This is the most voted upon album on this list, with 15 votes. Still, even with Jom repping the hell out of it, I still think more people ought to check this band/album out. Chalk up another one for the Aussies...except instead of pop-punk, this band is more in line with Porcupine Tree or The Butterfly Effect. Excellent Progressive album (of course, as with anything labeled "progressive," you ought to take that with a grain of salt). I might suggest either "Passengers" or "Everyday" to get a taste of them. | 8 | | Starflyer 59 Talking Voice vs. Singing Voice
Since they've been talked about a bit lately, why not rep them here? I really want to get Starflyer more known on this site, because they are perhaps my favorite "underground" band (another hidden gem on Tooth & Nail). They're a Christian band that produces a mix of Dream Pop and Shoegaze music. This album is perhaps their most consistent (along with perhaps 'My Island' or 'Old'); you should check out any of the first three songs ("Contest Completed," "Easy Street" or "Good Sons") to get a taste. | |
