Best Album Openers

A strong opening song in an album is a must for a really classic album and should really hook the listener but also act as a part of the whole. These are songs that I think are not only great songs in themselves but in some way manage to set the tone for an entire album.
1At the Drive-In
Arcarsenal

This song is a perfect example of the kind of sophisticated ferocity that Relationship of Command offered, a perfect ominous opening, some of the most evocative cryptic lyrical images on the album and a virtuoso vocal performance. Leaves you desperate for the next song.
2Brand New
Sowing Season (Yeah)

The explosive quiet/loud shifts of this song are repeated throughout The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me but this is their most effective use. The broodingly personal lyrics are fantastic (even if some of them are nicked from Kipling) and include a devastating broadside at Brand New's own fans.
3And So I Watch You From Afar
Set Guitars to Kill

No post-rock song has ever left me feeling so energised for an album. The colossal frantic sound leaves it feeling more like a live performance than anything, except the best live performance you've ever heard, helped along by strategic use of crowd noise. One song contains more great riffs than most albums but luckily the whole album is filled with this kind of noise.
4Modest Mouse
3rd Planet

The deceptive simplicity of all of The Moon and Antarctica is the great strength of this song. A warm opening to a album full of deep and cold images but it manages to mix a certain disquieting quality in its infectious catchiness, something this album specialises in. (Thanks to those who recommended this album to me on one of my previous lists)
5Hell is for Heroes
Kamichi

A great introduction to the shadowy and distorted world of Transmit Disrupt, the newfound emphasis on atmosphere and imagery is put to good use with a children's choir and bursts of dissonance while the trademark bark of HifH's singer adds bite to this song.
6Arctic Monkeys
The View from the Afternoon

Alex Turner's trademark witty and affectionately derogatory stories of urban England are perfectly encapsulated in this lively three and a half minute Saturday night scene which ends with an appropriately melancholic note.
