06.07.09 | So far really digging Opeth. I like how they switch it up in ways you don't quite expect. |
BallsToTheWall
06.07.09 | Opeth fans are the plague that will bring this world to ruins. Agalloch, Ulver, Dismember, Autumn Leaves there.... |
NoSurprises
06.07.09 | Also to further clarify, ridiculous guitar and or drum wankery is irritating as hell. |
applesoup
06.07.09 | Cynic is quite epic....their vocals are clean.. but also have a feww raspy growls. vocals are not exactly jeff buckley.. but still listenable, and they go with the music, they're kinda robotic though
listen to: Veil Of Maya and Evolutionary Sleeper.
some people say they're a bit like opeth, but that is subjective. |

06.07.09 | Ok, so Aggaloch's singer annoys the hell out of me with that whole guttural thing he's going for but Ulver seems pretty awesome so far. |
NoSurprises
06.07.09 | Scratch that, Ulver's vocalist is also annoying after a few minutes. |

06.07.09 | Just to clear up, I am NOT an Opeth fanboy. |

06.07.09 | My reccomendations are elite. I wouldnt steer you wrong. Also Katatonia, Danzig, Mirrorthrone, Manowar, Ikuinen Kaamos for more crossover. Ulver and Agalloch are some of the best bands in the genre, if you don't like them, seriously, stop fucking listening to metal now. Period. Pack up your bags and G.T.F.O the metal realm. |

06.07.09 | Mastodon are the best metal band ever IMO did you check them out |

06.07.09 | Yeah but so far its been kinda.... meh tbh. Was expecting to be more blown away. |
NoSurprises
06.07.09 | Actually, some of Mastodon is pretty awesome, but for me the song to song quality seems a little hit and miss. Like they sort of fall back on a default style sometimes. |

06.07.09 | so you want some good crossover metal huh? try katatonia, amorphis, rhapsody of fire, avenged sevenfold, dark tranquillity ( harsh vocals but he is the best harsh vocalist in the genre for me (bar peter of hyprocrisy solely because of what he did on nightmaremade flesh)...harsh yet you could make out ever word), those are just some off the top of my head, also katatonia is toolish so you will prob dig them |

06.07.09 | Specific albums I recommend for your case:
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Nightwish - Once, Dark Passion Play
Metallica - Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets
You probably won't be able to understand the lyrics in Blackwater Park, but it's my favorite album so I recommend it.
Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time, Powerslave
Ozzy Osbourne - Tribute (excellent transition album)
Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality |

06.07.09 | how does not liking ulver or agalloch make someone an elitist |
rotterdog
06.07.09 | I'd go for Bathory - Blood Fire Death |
Streetvulture
06.07.09 | I agree with you there, but wouldn't say that's elitist, just narrow-minded |
Streetvulture
06.07.09 | no. narrow minded doesn't necessarily mean elitist but an elitist is naturally going to be less accepting of views/tastes other than that of the "elite" which is narrow minded.
elitism encompasses a degree of narrow mindedness, not the other way around. |
Streetvulture
06.07.09 | uh huh. |

06.07.09 | point is this guys not an elitist |

06.07.09 | Wow sorry for not digging bands you like dude. I tried man. As for emotion, I am not getting that at all. It just feels like its not very genuine. Just because its loud or harsh doesn't mean it conveys an emotion or feeling effectively. Besides when it comes to music I can't force myself to like something that just doesn't really grab me. I don't even know why sometimes a song or artist doesn't get me but it happens. If that makes me elitist then whatever. The point of my spiel at the top of the list was to give people some indication of what generally appeals to me so it would be easier to come up with a list. Just because I've offended you by not liking a particular style doesn't make me close minded. Being open-minded doesn't mean liking everything, it means giving everything a chance and not pre-judging something before you hear it. Anyways, I'd like to thank everyone for the recommendations but it might take a while to get into a lot of them enough to be sure of what I like. As you might be able to tell I don't listen to much metal so I'm basically trying to broaden my horizons here. Again, thanks all (except someguest who was not helpful at all). |
