| Converting A Mainstream Kid
I will hopefully soon be starting a (Metal) band with a guy at my school (not really a friend), him on bass, me on drums (we will eventually find guitarists, a vocalist, etc). There are two problems though: 1) (not so serious, but still) his favourite genre is Death Metal, and I don't want to spend all my drumming years trying to play at hyper-speed when there's little reward, and 2) while his tastes are quite extreme and not exactly mainstream, he still listens to very commercialised, simple stuff. I'm gonna post a list of his 10 favourite bands; I want you guys to recommend him stuff that will make his tastes more...intelligent (I'm no good at rec'ing), based off the list. Gracias! | 1 | Slayer | 2 | Metallica | 3 | All That Remains | 4 | Nile | 5 | Satyricon | 6 | H.I.M | 7 | Meshuggah | 8 | Necrophagist | 9 | Slipknot | 10 | Beneath The Massacre | |

03.15.09 | None of those are bad bands, but still. I'm not really a fan of Death Metal, but here's some "intelligent" stuff (even if they seem like obvious choices).
Arch Enemy
At The Gates
Opeth
Underoath
older In Flames & Shadows Fall
Death
etc. | kygermo
03.15.09 | Mr. goddamn Bungle! | fireaboveicebelow
03.15.09 | oh yeah mr. bungle is great too | iamthesword
03.15.09 | Cynic's Focus would be a good pick, I suppose. Not too extreme, yet fairly hard, and definitely "intelligent". Might open up his mind to other types of music, as well. If you don't mind him liking -core, Converge may work. Oh, and In Mourning, obviously. | Spamue1G
03.15.09 | Fucking Godspeed You! Black Emperor
So metal. | myhigherpie
03.15.09 | well he already likes Necrophagist... so that's a start.
Death
Atheist
Between the Buried and Me
Cryptopsy (Lord Worm)
Cynic
Dark Tranquillity
Dream Theater
Edge of Sanity
Anata
Enslaved
Gorod
Converge
Hypocrisy (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
Immolation
Mastodon
Neurosis
Nightwish
Opeth (lol)
Pig Destroyer
Protest the Hero
Underoath (if hes able to get over their crappy scene core image. They have an amazing drummer too :) ) | Burn2Burn
03.15.09 | I was unaware that Meshuggah was simple and commercialized. | foreverendeared
03.15.09 | yeah what Zoo said. Death. But rec one of their more versatile albums like The Sound of Perseverance | Manic_
03.15.09 | Meshuggah have been a Headbangers Ball band since the 90s.
but I'd recommend Emperor | Underachiever
03.15.09 | Get him into prog rock that focuses on plenty of bass and drums (lots of prog bands really) | Klekticist
04.19.09 | yep... simple stuff.
