Favourite Bands

I'm bored and I feel like recording my current 10 favourite bands because I woudln't be surprised if that list is different in a week. Like anybody actually reads this anyway. *I don't know why but I can't type anything for the desciprtion in number 10...oh well. What can I say...Rage rules.
1Pink Floyd

The perfect band. Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, Meddle, Ummagumma, The Wall, A Piper at the Gated of Dawn...are all incredible albums in their own right. Put together, they set the deeply philosophical backdrop for the phenomenon that is The Pink Floyd.
David Gilmour is an absolute genious on guitar. Heart-wrenching epic solos one minute, chunky funk chords the next. Richard Wright was a true trailblazer when it comes to keyboards in popular (or popular-ish) music. Great lyrics courtesy Roger Waters (not to mention Syd Barret, David Gilmour,..and ocassioanlly Wright too).
Pink Floyd are my favourite band and get my vote for Best Band Ever. There, I said it.
Best Album: Wish You Were Here (1975)
Best Song: Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) [Wish You Were Here]
2The Beatles

Of course, like any classic rock enthusiast, I adore The Beatles. And why not. I feel a connection to the music of The Beatles and I don't think I'm alone. It is meaningful music, but playful at times. Profound describes it nicely.
The music of The Beatles, much like the decade in which it was made, tell a story of political unease, of a fundamental change in thinking.
As with Pink Floyd, The Beatles' discography is staggering. One masterpiece after another as well as several very good albums. Abbey Road, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the infamous White Album all deserve mention in a discussion of "Best Albums of the 1960s" (1970s I guess for Abbey Road)no matter which crowd you roll with.
You cannot deny The Beatles. Unless you can, in which case that's ok. I just like making lists.
Best Album: Abbey Road (1970)
Best Song: A Day in the Life [Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band]
3Coldplay

Until recently, I had never really given Coldplay a try. I bought into the crap I heard about them being a "gay" band. Yes, their music is softer than some (Chris Martin called them the hardest band in soft rock), but therein lies the genius of Coldplay. Quite possibly, they are The Beatles of our era. Think about it: four great, unique albums in a row and they show no signs of slowing down.
The emotion and personal touch felt in the beautiful lyrics of Chris Martin as well as in Johny Buckland's soaring leads propel this band above other so-called "alt-rock" bands (I'll never understand that clarification). Not to mention the drumming of Will Champion. Not technically incredible at all times, but it fits the music perfectly.
Coldplay are a great band because they consistently produce great songs as well as great albums. All four full-length studio albums are great while I would go so far as to call A Rush of Blood to the Head and Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends classic.
Holy shit I can't wait to see them at Rock Werchter 2009. Look out Belgium.
Best Album: A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002)
Best Song: Death and all His Friends [Viva La Vida or Death and all His Friends]
4Red Hot Chili Peppers

The perfect four-piece. Not enough can be said about the individual talents and relevance of John Frusciante, Michael "Flea" Balzary, Anthony Kiedis, and Chad Smith. I love them to death.
Yes, the lyrics are sometimes confusing or pointless even, but it's hard to care when the music is as good as the Red Hot Chili Peppers seem to make it. Diversity, depth of talent, great song-writing structure, and one hell of a live show help to propel this band to my top 5 list.
Best Album: Californication (1999)
Best Song: Californication [Californication]
5King Crimson

The progressive entity know as King Crimson arguably laid much of the framework for what was to become metal and post-metal music. King Crimson produced some of the heaviest sounds and albums I've ever heard (Red) as well as some of the most peaceful, serene, and moving pieces out all time (Epitaph). Also, Robert Fripp and Bill Bruford and unbelievable.
Best Album: In the Court of the Crimson King (1969)
Best Song: 21st Century Schizoid Man [In the Court of the Crimson King]
6The Jimi Hendrix Experience

As a guitar player, Jimi Hendrix almost needs to be on this list. What can I say about him that hasn't been said? A true genius both lyrically and musically, Jimi Hendrix plays some of the most timeless sounds in recent music. He was a virtuoso on the guitar and it didn't hurt that his "backup band" consisted of two of the best musicians on their respective intruments of the decade.
Best Album: Axis: Bold as Love (1967)
Best Song: Little Wing [Axis: Bold as Love]
7Radiohead

Like Coldplay, I had never really given Radiohead a try until recently. Basically, all I knew about them was: Scott Tenorman loved them, OK Computer was consitently ranked in "Top Albums" lists everywhere, and that Ku, the 60 year old Cambodian I worked with in the dish pit of my cafeteria at first year of university highly-recommended The Bends to me almost every day. Since I first decided to go cover to cover on the big three Radiohead albums, I never looked back. Incredible is all I can say.
Best Album: OK Computer (1997)
Best Song: The National Anthem [Kid A]
8Protest the Hero

Protest the Hero is simply the best of the vast genre known as "metal". In my opinion, Protest the Hero combine the best of all aspects of metal music. Insane drumming, unbelievable basslines, sweeping, tapping, shrashing and everything in betwenn on the guitars, a vast range of vocals indcluding some screaming and growling as well as provocative and meaningful lyrics form the basis of this great band.
Their two full-length studio releases, Kezia and Fortress, are good enough to place this band in my top 10.
Best Album: Fortress (2008)
Best Song: Blindfolds Aside [Kezia]
9Rise Against

Some of my favourite lyrics are Rise Against lyrics. No music has more powerful lyrics. Listening to Rise Against, truly listening, cannot leave you unmoved. Like Protest the Hero, they're all vegans and I'm a huge supporter of the general message of that both bands bring to their music.
Best Album: Siren Song of the Counter Culture (2004)
Best Song: Rumours of My Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated [Siren Song of the Counter Culture]
10Rage Against the Machine
