When it comes to Hip Hop songs, there are two things that are required to make a great one. Good lyrics and of course, the beat. The beat is so essential that without it, the music would have no meaning whatsoever. At times the beat can be so good that the rapper can turn out to be straight up shit and still result in a good song. Is it really a surprise that Premo is number 1? His music is the essence of what Hip Hop sounds like with meaningful record scratching, a bouillabaisse of samples, and a simplicity that makes hip hop beats sound like their easy to make. He has made every rapper sound even more Hip Hop with an underground swagger and sound. When people discuss the production of Hip Hop and don't make an effort to mention DJ Premier, they should either shut up or get slapped for not knowing how important he is to this art form we call Hip Hop. | | 2 | Dr. Dre
As a producer, Dr. Dre has become probably the most recognized in music. The singles he released have always sounded catchy and appealing to anybody but not with the intention of being a pop single. To describe the sound and style of production of RZA in word, it would be this: unpredictable. The thing that is most unique about The Rza is that his production is always laid back but hardcore at the same time. Mainly responsible for producing early Public Enemy and Ice Cube, The Bomb Squad had this great ability to make pissed off sounding music. The samples that they used were presented in a way that was so creative and so funky that if you heard the original source material, the music would sound totally different. Marley Marl's production is the definition of old school hip-hop but that is not even a bad thing. This legendary hit maker is not only responsible for making catchy beats, but also for making the first posse crew in hip hop known as The Juice Crew. Marley showed us that unity and Hip Hop go together as well as cereal and milk. He changed his style so much throughout the years that if people never knew he was responsible for producing hits for such a various array of artists, they would think his songs were produced by different beat makers all together. Rappers have named him the greatest and he has been labeled "your favorite producer's favorite producer" and with good reason. His production can be jazzy, soulful, and weird all at the same time without ever sounding forced. Jay Dee died in this planet too soon but the beats he left in this earth will always sound beautiful and never irrelevant. | | 9 | Timbaland
It's funny how times can change for a producer like Timbaland. One day your making some of the trippiest beats ever to be produced and the next, your mind can be so flooded with money and fame that your music can sound overused and stale. Timbaland has never sounded outdated and can still make an ill Hip Hop beat. These days Timbaland has produced bigger budget hits for more mainstream singers but when he gets in the studio with a great rapper, magic is made. | | 10 | The Neptunes
Although their music can be more pop oriented, The Neptunes have this great ablilty to make catchy songs that can appeal to anybody. When making a raw hip hop beat that's not aimed at being a pop single, they come out harder than ever. With originality that rarely sounds sampled and a style that is never old no matter how many times it's used, The Neptunes can make even the lamest of artists sound cool. | |
