02.27.09 | damn 3 lists in a row lol
All are ace, I just think Straight Outta Compton has gotten staler as I delve into more hip-hop. Illmatic, Liquid Swords, and Wu Tang still are fresh and brilliant. | MassiveAttack

02.27.09 | straight outta compton was my first hip hop album, and i definitely agree with you. it's a great introduction to the genre, as are the wu-tang clan.
here are some albums that i consider essentials:
a tribe called quest - basically their entire discography, but if you had to choose one album, i'd choose the Low End Theory
big L - livestylez ov da poor and dangerous (big L is one of my favorites of all time, he has some punchlines that will make you crack the fuck up when you get them)
big pun - capital punishment
cam'ron - purple haze (sometimes he gets hate because he's not a conscious rapper who talks about problems with the education system or black liberation and instead raps about bitches, money, and drugs, but he has an incredible laid-back flow and some hilarious lyrics)
clipse - hell hath no fury
digable planets - blowout comb (beautiful jazzy beats and laid-back rapping)
epmd - strictly business
eric b. and rakim - paid in full (although you really should have all their albums, this is a good starting point)
j dilla - donuts
jay-z - the blueprint
jedi mind tricks - violent by design
kmd - black bastards (mf doom before he became mf doom)
kool g rap and dj polo - wanted dead or alive
lil wayne - da drought 3 and dedication 2 (he gets a lot of hate, but i think a basic familiarity with weezy at his best is essential if you really want to understand hip hop)
mf doom - mm..food (really, really weird rapper who actually has a flow really similar to cam'ron)
mobb deep - the infamous (one of the grimiest, sickest, thuggest albums of all time. features cameos by Nas, Ghost, Raekwon, and Q-Tip from ATCQ)
mos def and talib kweli - blackstar
notorious big - life after death
raekwon - only built 4 cuban linx
ugk - underground kingz (the album that made me fall in love with southern hip hop)
long list, i know | illmitch
