Dizchu 08.19.26	Top 10 is just skimming the surface, there's always gonna be glaring omissions. Carcass, Incantation, Cannibal Corpse, Disgorge, Autopsy... all completely different bands with at least one classic each.

evilford 08.19.26	I can get with that take SWR is definitely the better album in my eyes. It seems like CoD had a much more felt cultural impact than SWR but as far as the music it just doesn't do a ton for me, despite featuring James Murphy. Pretty insane accomplishment imo

Dizchu 08.20.26	tbh I think a lot of classics get dismissed as "generic" because of how many bands ripped them off. It took a band like Defeated Sanity for me to realize the genius of early death metal, because they take a scholarly approach to the genre.

NightOnDrunkMountain 08.21.26	Cultural impact is a very important factor for consideration, when thinking of a list with this title. Cause of Death is an iconic record of its time. The consistency of the band as a whole is another matter, Obituary are surely average at best. I'd only consider maybe the Entombed / Dismember debut, Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation above Cause of Death for the purposes of this list here. The rest of the picks would indeed be in the top 50, not the other way around. There are more records that fit before thinking of ones already mentioned: Krisiun - Conquerors of Armageddon, Sinister - Diabolical Summoning, Angelcorpse - Exterminate, Dead Congregation - Graves of the Archangels, Disgorge - Consume the Forsaken I wish I could put Ancient Black Earth too, it would have been in the top 5 if it wasn't a compilation.

Hyperion1001 08.24.26	yeah heartwork and slaughter of the soul suck but the rest are pretty standard fare for what you would expect on a list like that. of course I personally disagree with leaving out things like consuming impulse and mental funeral and nespithe but when you only have 10 spots it’s mostly a matter of personal taste.
