| Top 10 Artists: 15 Years Later
Sup! I'm trying to get back into listening to more music. I figured my first contribution back could be an updated list of my favorites. My old one was written around 10/2010 so this is roughly 15 years later. I am now in my early-mid 30s and a lot had changed. I for one am no longer super elitist about punk rock, and rather than punk my favorite genre is now Post-Hardcore, so you'll see that reflected pretty early on in the list. | | 1 | Hail The Sun
Wake is a masterpiece. They've been my favorite since my 2nd playthrough of Wake. When I worked at a factory I listened to two records every morning before I got off, Wake was one of them. Very strong songwriting with a very intense sound. All of their records are very strong, and they put on a stunning performance. Sonically they're intense, complex, and have extremely well done songs. I can up on any record any time and enjoy myself. From songs like Falling on Deaf Ears which challenges the idea that maybe religion is a waste of time, but also what happens when we're wrong? to songs like Relapse is a Love Affair which is the most accurate description of addiction I've ever heard. Then there is Made Your Mark which is my favorite love song. | | 2 | Saosin
The Seven Years EP, and Self-Titled are both masterpieces. A complex sound with lyrics full of meaningful thoughts about things like self, introspection, family, and violence. I may get to see them soon and I am going to absolutely lose my mind. Songs like Voices, Finding Home, and You're Not Alone speak to me like no other. Sometimes all we need is to be reminded that we're all in this together. That new track has me ecstatic for the new record, and I cannot wait for November! | | 3 | Tony Sly
Tony is my favorite song-writer. Oh yeah, I grew up and realized Tony is better than Joey. Strong, horrifically sad songs about love, loss, addiction. I spent 10 years drinking extremely self-destructively, so I relate to Tony like no one else. I fortunately got out alive whereas others aren't always so lucky. Tony has this magical thing about him where no matter what song you cover it becomes your best song because anything Tony wrote is better than whatever you're writing. If you're struggling with an addiction please try to reach out to someone your life is worth so much more than substances. Even if its me you reach out to, I'm here for you. Rest in Peace, Tony. | | 4 | Eyedea
Speaking of Here For You, I owe my sobriety to a particularly painful bender that ended up with me in the mental-hospital, I have a vivid memory of listening to Here For You and everything clicking all at once. I became aware that I was killing myself. "The universe is not something separate from yourself / I know you feel alone, but that's why I'm here to help / I know you feel alone, but just look up at the stars /
And everything that is out there is what you really are". E&A is introspective hip-hop at its absolute finest. From Birth of a Fish to By The Throat you can feel Michael growing up. By The Throat speaks to me especially loudly tracks like Smile, and By The Throat are incredibly strong. Even though I don't listen to E&A like I used to Michael is still my favorite artist in the genre. Thank you for your music and you mind, Michael R.EYE.P | | 5 | The Format
Nate Ruess is my favorite vocalist. The Format's records Interventions & Lullabies, and Dog Problems have been incredibly important to me. Both records got me through particularly rough patches of self-doubt and break-ups. Genuine love songs that take into account that relationships are hard sometimes. From the brilliant Let's Make This Moment A Crime, to the title track of Dog Problems they've helped me so much with managing my emotions, allowing the tears to fall sometimes. Both records found me at the perfect time and helped me through two very hard break-ups. I love The Format. Their newest record Boycott Heaven is very strong too, and believe it or not I'm going through another break-up so it's probably doing to be on repeat for a little while. Holy Roller is a great song off'a the new record. | | 6 | HANABIE.
The best all-girl Japanese metal band, in my opinion at least. I can't talk too much about them since I don't speak any Japanese, but their high-energy metal is backed by an electric live performance. Hetsu is the cutest little bassist. If you've never listened to the their record Girl's Manifest Reform is incredible. They make me feel like a bad bitch, and I'm a 34 year old man. | | 7 | Pierce the Veil
Collide With The Sky is a masterpiece. Nothing makes me want to burn something down quite like these guys. High-energy, and strong instrumentalization, not to mention I really like Vic Fuentes' vocals. This is a band that found me as I didn't even know they existed till I got hard-stuck on King For A Day during one of those benders. Selfish Machines, and Collide stay saved to my phone because I know I can throw either record on for a good time. | | 8 | Bayside
What can I say they have strong songs. The newest record is great. Bury Me is my favorite or their songs. It found me right after my dad died and helped me put my feelings into words, without it I don't think I would've been able to be okay as fast I was. Megan is the one song I'm most interested in covering at the moment, but I will literally have to start over learning guitar.
My dad took his own life 4/14/25 if you're struggling with depression, and feel suicidal please reach out to someone or 988. Even if it's me you're reaching for; I'm here. There is so much beauty in this world and you are one of the most beautiful things in it. Rest in Peace, Dad. I hope there is no pain whenever you are now. | | 9 | Bad Astronaut
My online namesake for the most part till I started fighting under AnActualBanana. I love all three records, and depending on the day a different one may be my favorite. Good for a break-up, and great for falling in love. Not A Dull Moment is my favorite followed by Minus, then Violet. Still hoping for a baby girl someday to name Violet after Joey's daughter. Joey was my favorite artist growing up, but with growth I got more into straight forward songwriting with less metaphor. They're great though. | | 10 | Stolas
Living Creatures is a masterpiece. An electric complicated sound with strong writing. Nothing makes me want to pick back up drums like Stolas. The crazy thing about Stolas being up this high is it's 100% just Living Creatures, the only other song of theirs I've even heard is Bellweather which was a baller-ass music video. If you've never heard Living Creatures I cannot recommend it higly enough. | | 11 | A Thank You!
