04.13.26 | I always liked Josh Homme's guitar tone on Songs for the Deaf. All like mids and bass for a nice flabby crunch that beefs up nicely with some overdrive or whatever when they get rowdy. |
Futures
04.13.26 | for thrash to me, ride the lightning is peak. just pops so hard. |
budgie
04.13.26 | iirc ride the lightning stood out cuz they layered a bunch of guitar tracks which prob wasnt the convention among 18 year old alcoholics in 1984. otherwise the gear was super generic les pauls into overdriven marshall (not a bad thing at all) and yeah its a nice chunky tone on the album |
Zac124
04.13.26 | In Flames - The Jester Race
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter
Metallica - Ride the Lightning

04.13.26 | one of my favorite science factoids is if you showed hawks a picture of a guitar and a picture of a drumset and asked him to point to the guitar there's a 50% chance he would get it wrong |

NudeTayne
04.14.26 | I will say the palm muting tone in And Justice is one of the reasons I ever bothered playing metal at all |

04.14.26 | Hmm ones that come to mind for me:
Exodus - Atrocity Exhibition Exhibit A (very scratchy but very chunky, savage sound)
Slipknot - All Hope is Gone (pleasingly saturated, pick attack feels very deep?)
Decapitated - Carnival is Forever (very unique mid character, pick attack is huge, single note runs have really extreme harmonics)
Dehumanized - Prophecies Foretold (ultra scooped but very thick tone, pinch harmonics jump out like crazy. aided by the very slappy kick drum I think)
Hate Eternal - Conquering the Throne (very deep but quite tight, in my mind the target guitar tone for this type of music)
Disentomb - Misery (extremely dark for quite a technical style of music, sorta slinks around like the batmobile)
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked (feels huge, probably again down to the great drum production as well but conveys a sense of grandeur that other Nile albums don't really have)
Cannibal Corpse - Gore Obsessed (tight enough for the music but very gainy, kind lends a "fleshy" sound)
Anthrax - Spreading the Disease (pick attack is simply insane)
Vader - XXV (another one with kind of a weird mid character, very tight but despite the screaming harmonics the bass response sounds great)
Testament - The Formation of Damnation (pretty standard modern metal tone but not excessively clinical, founds very big and a little wooly, apparently the guitars had Dimarzio Super Distortions which may be why) |
budgie
04.14.26 | oh nice garas fuzzy tones rule, pike has an excellent sound on holy mountain thinking about it |
Donchivo
04.14.26 | Bolt Thrower - Mercenary (The most chunky, fat, multilayered Guitar sound in Death Metal, this one is so thick and delicious)
and
The Solo of Fermented Offal Discharge. That lofty sound is sooo perfect! The overall guitar sound of Onset is also nice n thick but lacks a bit of dynamics and range. |
budgie
04.14.26 | MERCENARYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY |
TheManMachine
04.14.26 | wipers |
thumbcrusher
04.14.26 | Children of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet
Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh
Also been listening to a bunch of Rammstein recently and their production generally is incredible |
Donchivo
04.14.26 | MERCENARYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY [2]
but the best song to savour that aural guitar onslaught is 'Powder Burns', those notes just hanging there after being played and vibing in your head are so fucking awesome.... |
budgie
04.14.26 | thje opener zeroed is my fav off merc fuck i love zeroed fuck fuick fuck |
Donchivo
04.14.26 | yeaaah zeroed is amazing. with just the opening riff you kinda know that you are in for an amzing treat with the whole album. |

budgie
04.14.26 | mercenary is so good its basically an honorary thrash metal record |
MTObsidian
04.14.26 | I think the guitar tones on pretty much any Defeated Sanity album are really tight. Their tone fits the genre/music perfectly. |
Jmal00
04.14.26 | No Gypsy Ways mention yet? For shame folks. Night Stalker alone makes that a top tier tone album |
AlexKzillion
