| Music Snapshots Part III
I made lists called Music Snapshots Part I and Music Snapshots Part II. This is Music Snapshots Part III. | | 1 | | Mr. Bungle California
"Pink Cigarette" (the English horn)
Less of a time stamp for this one and more of a specific feature. This might seem like an easy pick off the album, they made a music video for it after all. But the song deserves every bit of acclaim it gets, and my favorite part of the whole thing is the English horn. That's not an instrument I hear often, and think about even less. But it's a really nice touch, and the simple phrases performed add to the overall sexiness and intrigue. It gives me a sense when making music where you're like "something's missing" or "need to add something else, something small just to give it that extra". Because without it I wouldn't think "hey, this song needs an English horn". But Mr. Bungle thought it did, and that's why this album is the goat. | | 2 | | White Ward Love Exchange Failure
"Love Exchange Failure" (0:00-3:22)
A long time stamp, but the song runs 11:55. And this band's jazz capabilities needs an album of nothing but. This dark and gloomy intro is like a song within a song, a calm before a storm, after which a blackened death style metal roars out. It was especially fun the first time I heard this, going into it knowing White Ward is a metal band and hearing this as the first 3 minutes. | | 3 | | At The Soundawn Shifting
"Mudra: In Acceptance and Regret" (3:20-4:49)
Pretty much a repeat of the above. A metal band inserting a stunning jazz section into a song, this time with vocals. I love the drums throughout and it's fun to sing along, all the performances are ace, and it's quite sexy. | | 4 | | Eternal Tears of Sorrow A Virgin and a Whore
"The River Flows Frozen (Acoustic)" (4:10-5:07)
I don't think this version is on the standard release, maybe a bonus version or whatever. Anyway, this section is a piano refrain from earlier in the song, and this time an acoustic guitar solo comes in. The guitar is all well and good, but the piano throughout is the star of the show for me. I kinda don't remember what the original version is like because I've just always listened to this, with all clean vocals and acoustic guitar...it's simply gorgeous. | | 5 | | Celine Dion Falling into You
"It's All Coming Back to Me Now" (tone shifts)
Let's switch it up from those last three. There are a number reasons to like this song, but one I think about every time I listen to it is how the tone of the music changes with the attitude of lyrics. During the verses she's lamenting a lost love, a bad relationship, all that. Then those pre-chorus sections kick in when she becomes more defiant and strong, and the music matches as the dynamics go up and the feel goes from sorrow and wistfulness to triumph and resolve. "But you were history with the slamming of the door" fuckin' tell him, Celine | |

02.26.26 | also, kind of a funny coincidence 1 is on here cuz just a couple days ago i saw the film In the Mood For Love. There's a scene where the guy comes into his room after the woman was just there and he finds a cigarette with lipstick on it in the ashtray. i almost thought maybe it was the inspiration for the song but then i realized the film came out after the album lol | Josh D.
02.26.26 | Earlier this week, someone I haven't spoken to in a few months text me at 8:30pm and it was just a Spotify link to "Retrovertigo". People I know associate me with the album. | Josh D.
02.26.26 | And Hawks, I need you to get it together. | cylinder
02.26.26 | woah that's cool. I mean, you can't blame em, Retrovertigo is one of the best songs ever made.
