Reviewing TV Series I've Watched Lately

Love Is Not Enough

Silo Season 1 - I had high hopes for this scratching that Fallout itch while waiting each week for the next episode. Sci fi mystery dystopia getting glazed by reviews for its mystery and gritty world building. God what a disappointment. After a strong start this was a slog to get through. None of the character of Fallout or Mad Max. Dull brown colour palette and feels like we see the same three turd coloured locations all season. Mystery takes ages to unravel and takes a backseat to uninteresting characters and their drama, and YA coded world building. The last two episodes are enough to twist you into wanting to peek next season and likely suffer the same toxic fate, but I did not have to drag myself through the meat of episodes for what was a climactic but predictable twist. This would have been better as seven episodes, not ten, and in the same league as Severance this is not. Sorry Apple TV and their paid-off hacks at Screen Rant. I'm being generous with a 5/10

Rick and Morty Season 8 - A decent return to form. I was always a big fan of the zany humour and self contained sci fi stories of the early seasons but it isn't controversial to say the writing quality and jokes have been inconsistent for a while, at times a parody of S1 and S2. This latest season takes a slightly better approach, focusing on more diminutive character development and giving each family member some time to shine across the breadth of episodes. True laugh out loud moments are still few and far between and the show can't seem to shake the development of a lazy, self-referential and tryhard humour that grates on rewatches, but this was easily my favourite in a while. Shout out to the Jerry and Farmer Rick episodes especially. Fanboyish 7/10

The Correlation Between Entrance And Exit Wounds

Station Eleven Mini Series - Always down for some quirky post apocalyptic action. Like Silo this is based on a book I did not read. The initial premise is pretty derivative but the exploration of character and philosophy through the lens of art is quite novel and I enjoyed the story for the most part, despite not exactly understanding where exactly that exploration was meant to take me most of the time. At times a bit slow and confusing but otherwise a neat little sci fi/drama show. Strong 6/10

Fallout Season 2 - God I love this show. I didn't immediately watch season 1 cos I never believed an adaption of one of my favourite games would ever be as good as it is. Watching this show makes me feel like a little kid booting up Fallout 3 and NV again. The world building and storylines are faithful to the feeling and lore of the games while dramatically strong and original in their own right. The characterisation is superb with multiple standout performances (Ella Purnell, Walter Goggins, Kyle MacLachlin, Justin Theroux). The colour palette and videography are pure cinema at times (shout out to the last 20 mins of the penultimate episode) and again I can't wait for the next season. Complaints about the depiction of and faith to aspects of the games I feel are knitpicking a lot as much as I would have liked to have seen more bustling civilisation and a more sinister Legion at times. Regardless, I don't even care about Fallout 5 anymore. 9/10

The Righteous Gemstones Season 1 - I loved Vice Principals and have been a fan of Danny McBride and Walter Goggins ever since (though I still need to watch Eastbound Down S3 after a somewhat lacklustre S2). This carries on the spirit of McBride's past dark comedies with a fun and chaotic premise, plenty of drama and understated, sometimes hilarious (albeit not relentless) comedy. Some of the character development felt a bit unearned but I had plenty of enjoyment with this one. Fair 7/10

Alien Earth Season 1 - Considering my love of classic and stylish sci fi it's weird I never watched the Alien films until a year or two ago, partly down to the fact I was never a big fan of horror. Despite it's shortcomings, this is a welcome and stylish addition to the Alien world. It sometimes has uneven plotting, but when this show hits it hits hard. It looks stunning and is utterly creepy at times, with one monster taking the crown. Samuel Blenkin is brilliant as the arrogant villain you love to hate and Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh stood out to me too. The adult actors are convincing at playing kids in adult bodies and I found myself genuinely invested in their fates, and I found the relational dynamics between the varyingly human characters interesting. Looking forward to season 2. Appreciative 7/10

Haunting of Hill House Mini Series - Alien and Mike Flanagan's productions have made me rethink my indifference to the horror genre. This was very well made, very creepy, at times horrific, very gothic. I love Flanagan's slow pacing of tension and horror, and digging into the character's back stories was interesting, with the cinematography and all the little embellishments tying it altogether. It's been a few months now sinced I watched this but I remember enjoying it a lot. 8/10

Death Is Little More

Haunting of Bly Manor Mini Series - Similar to Hill House in gothic tone, this one felt a little slower and dragged at times. When it is good it is very good though though, and I felt the culmination of all the tension into the final few episodes pretty satisfying. 6/10

Midnight Mass Mini Series - Flanagan's Masterpiece. I could gush about this one endlessly. I don't wanna say too much so as not to spoil it but that is difficult. The creepy build up, subtle horror and upended exploration of religious themes all work perfectly. It's original and genius in a way that makes you wonder how nothing like it has been made before, and hits hard having been brought up Catholic myself. Hamish Linklater as the sermonic priest is brilliant and almost had me ready to drink the kool-aid myself at times.

I see a lot of people in reviews criticise the monologues. Those people can suck one. This show having a lower IMDb rating than Silo and other generic shlock (don't get me started on Sherlock) tells me all I need to know about people's tastes. Equal parts character drama and terror, splendid at both. Enthralling to watch and interesting in a way that burrows into your head and leaves you unsettled well past the climactic finale. Easy 10/10

Fall of the House of Usher Mini Series - Had a lot of fun with this one. There is a lot of propulsion in the plot and it trades the gothic vibe of Hill House/Bly Manor for very modern and sleek look and setting. Almost like Final Destination meets Succession in tone and the varied characters who are dislikeable but interesting in a way that keeps you invested, which admittedly isn't easy to do. Not sure you'd call it as thought-provoking and original as Midnight Mass (that is hard to do) but keeps you engrossed the whole way through with plenty of terror along the way as its relatively simple mystery unfolds. 9/10

Nightmare Tripping

The Righteous Gemstones Season 2 - Thought this was a step up from season 1 with a more ambitious and well-constructed storyline, better developed humour and plenty of plot turns all the way through. The characters are developed further as well and Eli's backstory yields interesting results. Enjoyed this a lot although they make the characters very sympathetic by the end considering how terrible they generally are, which is a tendency I notice a lot with McBride and American comedies in general. Still, solid 8/10
