| 24 | | Noise Trail Immersion Tutta la morte in un solo punto

| 20 | | Deadguy Near-Death Travel Services
Another stellar comeback from some 90s hardcore legends. Not up their with their peak stuff but theyre in their late 40s and 50s ffs so I am MORE than happy with how this turned out. Tim Singer still sounds incredible and I managed to catch them live and they can still show some young bucks how to do it.

| 19 | | Wyatt E. Zamaru Ultu Qereb Ziqquratu Part 1
Been doing his thing for a while now and really underrated. Great live. Doomy/droney/spaced out jams. Can hear the similarities in parts to fellow Belgians Neptunian Maxamilism... without the extra 17 hours. Anything that gives me images of deserts/sitars and people in big hats with symbols on them is good by me.

| 18 | | Andrew Nolan Monochrome Vol. 1: House Of Flying Daggers

| 15 | | HAYWARDxDALEK HAYWARDxDALEK
I adore early Dalek but ever since Octo left its never really hit the mark over a full album despite still being , by far, one of teh best experiences live. This is my fave Dalek in a LONG time. Collab with This Heat drummer Charles Haywood concocted in sunny Manchester UK. Would probably be higher but it was a latecomer.

| 14 | | Martrod Draumsýnir Eldsins
Icelandic black metal supergroup. Been waiting for this for a while. A masterclass. The drumming is some of the best on any extreme record this year.
https://youtu.be/fLy9WdcLsB4?si=ilSowGUdCTuG01gE |
| 13 | | Sea Mosquito Majestas
UK's Pysch/Black metal LADS with another killer.
https://youtu.be/CawJE-qGT-8?si=-q-8TwQe-Qmf499D |
| 12 | | Blawan SickElixir
Surprise of the year. Haven't listened to Blawan for years. What is it? No idea. Techno? Bass ?Sound design is crazy on it. Late entry for sure. Loads of fun.
https://youtu.be/FYZlw_OGixM?si=gsaPkByE91RxEEy1 |
| 11 | | Qrixkuor The Womb of the World
Another band that can't seem to put a foot wrong. 'Poison Palinopsia' was one of my faves a few years ago and this is RIGHT up there if not quite as good. Wasn't too sure on the theatrics at first but they grew on me.
https://youtu.be/CawJE-qGT-8?si=-q-8TwQe-Qmf499D |
| 10 | | Steve Lehman The Music of Anthony Braxton
Lehman is quite simply a God amongst men and therefore attracts other gods to work with and spunk their godliness into our peasant earholes ( Mark Turner and Daimen Ried on here) Got to be honest I had never heard of Anthony Braxton, a jazz musician from the 60/70's, so this took me by surprise. Although with Lehmans name on it you should know already. He never misses.

| 9 | | Catharsis (USA-NC) Hope against Hope
Greatest come back of all time. One of my fave hardcore bands and massively influential hardcore/punk/crust bands from the 90s out of nowhere with a middle finger to the current state of the world. Makes me wanna grow dreads and buy some pepper spray. Im bald though so unless I fly to turkey thats not happening.
https://youtu.be/Y_5-foCIO74?si=pqsT8zByN500JMYm |
| 8 | | Fieldwork Thereupon
The 'Power trio for the new century' return with a follow up as good as its debut. Vijay Iler/Steve Lehman and Tyshawn Sorey. Three incredible musicians on there own come together again to create a magical jazz record.
https://fieldworktheband.bandcamp.com/album/thereupon |
| 7 | | billy woods Golliwog
Prefer the August Fanon version (slightly) but its not uploaded here yet and Ive just eat 2 cinnamon buns and a plate of ribs and can't be bothered doing it.
https://billywoods.bandcamp.com/album/gowillog |
| 6 | | Imperial Triumphant Goldstar
More straight ahead but keeping everything there that makes them great or makes you hate. Whatever. Probably my fave since Alphaville.
https://youtu.be/cPzQ9wsYT0Q?si=o371Y7JIjJNbPpMc |
| 5 | | Grey Aura Zwart Vierkant: Slotstuk
Avant garde/Black metal. Love these mad dutch head the balls.
'This story follows Pedro, a 20th-century Modernist painter whose attempt to dismantle physical reality through abstraction leads him to the brink of madness.'
https://youtu.be/2uLp1-pszQM?si=OdFdfMLLo4OtUwdp |
| 4 | | Defacement Doomed
Possibly my fave death metal band at the moment with these last 2 records. Just getting better and better and including more every time, the softer/ambient passages are great and just give you a breath before it crushes you again. I think Brendan from Convulsing had something to do with the album. Did he record it maybe? can't remember I am slightly drunk.
https://youtu.be/-tn6DrkMAuI?si=VSsvWkq-zNZMs9qj |
| 3 | | Neptunian Maximalism Le Sacre Du Soleil Invaincu
Incredible band. Not put anything out remotely weak for me. Sure you need patience and you know you're in for a journey but its never not worth it. Saw them at Roadburn last year or year before and obviously had to 'trim ' everything into a 1 hour set and it was pure magic. I love when they drone ,I love when they let loose and jam. They rule basically. They make me wish I toked.
https://youtu.be/jcmVKNN33vs?si=YVa0lvGXjJk6QPxl |
| 2 | | Sumac and Moor Mother The Film
Saw this live in April and knew it would be a massive record. Worrying initially it might be overbearing with Aaron Turner noodling but its a perfect mix and exactly what you want in a collab.
https://youtu.be/7rjgWO-hieo?si=AgQIjXAPcqFEnpLP |
| 1 | | Beannachd Leibh Walking In His Works
No idea how to even describe this its all over the place but its wonderful. Black metal/Death/Orchestral/Proggy/Synths/gothic its got bits of everything and therefore not for everyone but I've been obsessed with it this year. Gives me peak Kayo dot vibes at times even Time of Orchid. Rules.
