Top 30 (metal) Songs Of The Year
1Omnium Gatherum
A Shadowkey

Just love the catchy riff at the start and the chorus is just so awesome. Might not be the most technical song ever but it's just a song you never get tired of and gets better every time you hear it!
2Mercenary
Embrace the Nothing

Killer chorus and verse straight after the chorus too.
3Century
Black Ocean

Perfect blend of melody and aggression...mostly aggression!!
4Amon Amarth
Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags

Great opening riff and generally catchy as hell!!
5Eluveitie
Inis Mona

Probably the best folk metal song I've ever heard. Although unlike most folk metal songs, this actually has some metal behind it.
6Misery Signals
Set in Motion

Hard to pick a favourite from such a consistently great album. Think this just edges it. The middle section from 1:28 to 2:11 where everything slows down is incredible.
7Cynic
Integral Birth

Love the chorus with the layered vocals.
8As Daylight Dies
Cathedral

I don't usually like bleak songs such as this but this is an exception. The screaming is strangely soothing - perfect for falling asleep to too!
9Shai Hulud
Misanthropy Pure

Usually I don't like songs with no conventional structure as I find them difficult to get into. This meanders all over the place but just about manages to stay on track!
10Abigail Williams
The World Beyond

Perfect symphonic black metal. Simple as. What's not to like?
11Benea Reach
Zenith

Probably the weirdest song on the album but it's all the better for it. Not always in the mood for it but a brilliant song nonetheless. The verses with the lead guitar in the background are amazing.
1236 Crazyfists
The Black Harlow Road

Forget what you may think about 36 Crazyfists and at least give this song a chance. The pre-chorus is so heavy and then the chorus is just a brilliant melody!
13Sylosis
After Lifeless Years

The guitars are incredible on this song. The riff just before the chorus is genius and the solos are really good too.
14Morker
Segertag

Favourite black metal song of the year although to be fair Morker have some influences outside of black metal too. Love the piano beginning and opening riff.
15The Great Deceiver
A Life Transparent

May not be the most original song but this mix of hardcore/metalcore/metal/melodic death metal fuses perfectly on this song. The guitars accompanying the chorus are great.
16Beneath the Massacre
Condemned

The arpeggio riffs rip and the breakdowns during the chorus are also pretty cool.
17The Bronx
Past Lives

Great punk song (yes ok, not strictly metal) with a huge chorus.
18The Ocean Collective
Orosirian

This album is really more than the sum of its parts. Orosirian is probably the song that encompasses the album best. Heavy aggressive bits interpersed with quiet parts using string instruments. Somehow everything falls together perfectly.
19Metallica
All Nightmare Long

I'm not the greatest Metallica fan, but this is definitely the best song from Death Magnetic. That chorus is simple but effective and the stop start riffs give it an edge.
20Slipknot
Psychosocial

Really good song although it's almost single-handedly sustained by its chorus. Still, nothing wrong with a good chorus!
21Artefact
Catharian Ruins

The synths during the chorus just make this a truly epic song. Chaotic at times, medieval melodies and some truly great soloing at the end.
22Grand Magus
Like the Oar Strikes the Water

The opening riff makes this song and the vocals are particularly impressive.
23Rotten Sound
Praise the Lord

Probably my favourite grind song...ever. That said, I don't listen to that much grind! 1:20 of pure mayhem but with a discernible groove.
24In Flames
Alias

Really good song in an otherwise forgettable album. Love the synths and the trippy riffs.
25Poisonblack
Left Behind

Amazing keyboards backed up by a solid chorus and great vocals from ex Sentenced vocalist.
26Kiuas
Conqueror

Ok, at least one power metal song. The album got boring very quickly but this has some great solos and a chorus made of gold.
27Death Angel
Lord of Hate

Really good all-round thrash song with a good groove, cool riffs and a nice acoustic intro.
28Testament
F.E.A.R

Really boring album as a whole but this song is much faster and generally it feels like it has some purpose to it. Groovy!
29Heaven Shall Burn
Murderers of all Murderers

Really heavy song with some nice guitars kicking in when the chorus starts. Pretty standard but amazingly effective.
30Iskald
A Breath of Apocalypse

Pretty standard black metal song but very well executed.
