10.07.25 | extremely sputcoded - also cheating because while they are the best albums ever 6 is two albums! |
Hawks
10.07.25 | Nice! |
JMNewcomer25
10.07.25 | @swallowtales not cheating at all. 6 is a compilation album and I said nothing about Compilations being disqualified lol. Plus listening to them as a double album is the only right way. Very difficult for me and I'd imagine for plenty of others to keep the two separated when discussing them |
arthropod
10.07.25 | No Shug?
No NSV?
Good list. |
JMNewcomer25
10.07.25 | @arthropod honestly just never got around to delving deep into either. Where's a good place to start my man? |
arthropod
10.07.25 | My man, I actually think they're massively overrated. I like Nothing for the hooks and Immutable for the abundance of melodic guitar work, also select songs like Bleed or Do Not Look Down. NSV works best with the "don't think too much and enjoy the onslaught" mindset, but both bands are hardly digestible to me otherwise. |
Hawks
10.07.25 | Art bro ily, but man what a bad take lol. |
arthropod
10.07.25 | By "bad take" you mean the "overrated" part, the "hardly digestible" part, the "don't think too much" part or the implied "Immutable > TVSOR" part? |
JMNewcomer25
10.07.25 | Y'all got any fire recs based off anything here? |

10.08.25 | dw I was joking about it cheating, was def not serious at all, they are basically my fav albums ever so I totally understand |
Emim
10.08.25 | You were losing me but 7-9 redeemed it |

10.08.25 | LYBM will never touch Bath in my opinion. I know they’re interlocking sister albums but it just does NOT have the same outright magic.
Bath is my #1 by spades. Not much else comes close. |
efp123
10.08.25 | damn, 24? that's cool, I just don't ever see people drooling over that one. I dug it though. was glad they didn't make some bullshit like "light we made" that just was not good idk |
JMNewcomer25
10.09.25 | @efp honestly man, 24 isn't even anything special musically or anything. I more love it because of the rawness of emotion, and the feelings the lyrics and vocal melodies evoke. Something about it just sticks with me. If I was making a list of the the BEST albums I've ever heard, it wouldn't even be in the top 100. Just a very relatable message, very easy listening and a very colorful yet gloomy sound.
@ThyCross Yeah. Honestly I agree that Bath is the superior album between the two. Musically far more dynamic, more stylistically diverse genre blending overall. The only thing I don't like about LYBM is how "Monstrously Low Tide" has such a fucking amazing first half, but just sorta coasts along during the second half. Just an underwhelming close to such a fantastic double album. I get why it ends that way from a narrative perspective but I was just hoping more something more grand to close it out |
efp123
10.09.25 | I dig your thoughts. I enjoyed it too for what it was |
JMNewcomer25
10.09.25 | @efp you should check out 11 if you havent. To me HRVRD is like Circa Surivive but more musically and lyrically mature. Better vocals. More subtle when it comes to prog elements. I actually learned about Balance and Composure through a podcast I was listening to where one of the members from HRVRD brought them up. Apparently they toured together. 11 is such a gorgeous record. Very dreamlike melodically and in tone. |
Wildcardbitchesss
10.09.25 | 6 is goated, TSOPTC is obviously fucking incredible as well… and I still really love Science Fiction.
If I made a top 50 all of those would probably land in it. |
Wildcardbitchesss
10.09.25 | Gotta say tho, as much as I like Gris Klein I think We Already Lost the World is the better Birds in Row record… but you can’t go wrong with those guys. Everything they’ve done is fucking gold |
troyofyort
10.09.25 | Still life is best Opeth and Hemispheres is best Rush, good shit. |
troyofyort
10.09.25 | List is making recs hard so I'm just gonna throw out some that I kinda got vibes of looking at this list. Probably have already heard a lot of them and may not even like but still putting them out there.
Hum
Legend (early American metal)
Moon Tooth
Pallbearer
Propagandhi
Protest The Hero
Riverside |
evilford
10.09.25 | Shug just catching strays in random ass threads for no damn reason these days. Sad |
JMNewcomer25
10.09.25 | @troyofyort yeah. most people tend to gravitate towards BWP but to me BWP just feels like Still Life but with less personality, more predictable musically, and too clean production wise. Still Life gets shit on over its production but I've always found that it adds to the charm and the rawness of it all.
I'm a fan of riverside, and Hum is fantastic. Their comeback album makes it into my top 100 list of albums. Been meaning to check out Pallbearer

Futures
10.09.25 | i very much enjoy the variety here mr newcomer. still life would be my opeth pick. shoutout colors too, grew off many i guess but i still adore it. science fiction might be my bn pick these days as well.

10.09.25 | Not much experience in Pallbearer nor post-rock in general but I assert that Mind Burns Alive is a great album with beautiful riffs. |
JMNewcomer25
10.09.25 | @futures thanks man! Alot of stuff I wanted to include here. Been meaning to do a top 100 albums list but it would take forever. Sometime before the end of the year. Science Fiction for me is like a 98/100 and Devil and God is like 96 or 97. Neither is objectively better but I give the edge to Science Fiction just because it was my first time hearing a BN record during release and the experience was like no other. The insanely cryptic way it was leaked as one track. Lit Me Up is a strong contender for the single most haunting album opener I've ever heard.

10.09.25 | dude jm same here. i have such vivid memories of the hype train here and where i was listening to it for the first time, as well as subsequent times where i played like like 20 times lol. those kind of moments are what makes music special. waste is such an all timer to me. |
JMNewcomer25
10.09.25 | @futures bro waste is legit their 2nd best song imo right after limousine. Song got me through so many hard times. |
Bloma
10.12.25 | Fuck yeah, Frances is probably my all time favourite as well!
Close to the Edge is right up there.
I used to love The Mantle but haven't heard it in years. I really miss that rainy, snowy, mysterious in nature vibe though.
Silent Hill 2, also a timeless classic.

10.14.25 | maybe try Elil by Fall of Efrafa (it’s on bandcamp), truly amazing stuff if you dig late-era Swans or alike |

10.14.25 | I don’t like the voice the frontman has for manchester orchestra. “alien” is a pretty good song though |
evilford
10.14.25 | Still gonna ignore the fact that some dude hates shug so much that he finds some random list that doesn't even mention them and starts talking shit about em for no reason lmao |

10.14.25 | Your number 1 all time is my number 1 all time congrats we are friends. |

10.14.25 | 6 is cheating lol |
JMNewcomer25
10.14.25 | @bloma glad to see we seem to hold alot of tbe same tastes, man! Shoot me some recs. Also, check out 11 if you havent already.
@efp123 yeah man. "The Alien" has always been my all time favorite MO track. Andy's voice took me time to get used to. I still have a hard time taking him seriously during heavier tracks especially on their older albums where he'd try to use harsher delivery. Just hard not to see it as somewhat wimpy lol
