Let me RATE your 5's!

In the past, you might have seen a similar list from a former Staff member that generally involved said staff member criticizing your music listening choices, but I am here to simply look at your 5's and let you know how awesome you are and pick out some of my favorites in your selection of 5's.
1Rush
Permanent Waves

It's simple, comment if you'd like me to examine your 5's with my clear and very smart music expertise and I will simply rate your choices for 5's with probably a lot more kindness than you are usually use to on this website. I'm starting this list today to give you guys a chance to comment below but I will most likely not start working on it until tomorrow.
2Sufjan Stevens
Carrie and Lowell

Also, just for extra fun, based on your 5's I might try to make a suggestion or two on some albums that you might enjoy based on albums you do clearly enjoy by your ratings.

I AM NOT A MUSIC EXPERT, this is just for fun and for the purpose of engaging with you wonderful people.
3Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
The Firstborn Is Dead

jrlikestodance:

Thoughts:

I mean, where do we even begin when we talk about diverse taste. Having an Anal Cunt 5, D’Angelo 5’s and a couple Ween 5’s? We are talking about someone who loves to be challenged by the music they hear while also clearly respecting some classics like the Madvillain album, Outkast and Nirvana. I love that there’s a couple records in here that I just haven’t even heard of before either like SBTRKT and Implosive Disgorgence. I’m pretty sure you were also the person that put me on to the UGK album as well and I have to thank you again for that because that record absolutely slaps front to back. Overall, nothing to complain about here, just someone who loves a variety of music.

My Faves from Your List:

Probably UGK, Calculating Infinity and Nas

My Rec for you:

Since it seems you enjoy Tom Waits, I’m going to rec “The Firstborn is Dead” by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4Ithaca
They Fear Us

Hawks:

Thoughts:

Hawks, my brother, I know you have some good taste in music. I don’t always agree with the stuff you dislike but I feel we both enjoy to diversify and expand our horizons a fair bit. And after looking at your 5’s, I find it very interesting that despite your willingness to explore other music, your 5’s are reserved mostly for some death metal/black metal classics as well as some hip hop classics, with a few exceptions obviously. Your love of CoF is apparent, as well as your love for some truly raw black metal stuff with Ulver which I know you suggested to me in the past and I did not enjoy it, my apologies. While I might not personally love all this stuff, I appreciate that you have those clear albums that you hold dear considering you’ve rated over 7k records on here and there’s only like 30 or 40 5’s that you’ve rated. Good shit, my dude.

My Faves from Your List:

Midian, Ecailles De Lune and Individual Thought Patterns

My Rec for you:

“They Fear Us” - Ithaca
5Killswitch Engage
The End Of Heartache

Arthropod:

Thoughts:

Your 5’s scream fun to me. You love some good ass fun metal with some guitar solos, some great melodies and some really good harsh stuff as well. Seeing some BFMV 5’s and A7X 5’s makes me want to revisit some of those records that I haven’t listened to in full in quite a while. You’ve also made room for classics like Black Sabbath, LP and Agalloch but also, I’ve never heard of a bunch of these and while I venture to guess that they might not necessarily be my cup of tea, 6 albums by Poets of the Fall that are a 5, I should probably check one out to see what’s up.

My Faves from Your List:

That debut Sabbath is a must listen, Scream Aim Fire by BFMV is probably my favorite by them as well!

My Rec for you:

You’ve definitely got some corekid taste like myself and the fact that you don’t have any Killswitch Engage rated is crazy to me: “The End of Heartache” by Killswitch Engage
6Lizzy Mercier Descloux
Press Color

gabba:

Thoughts:

Your 5’s are just awesome, so much overlap with the stuff I enjoy. Very heavy on post-punk which your pie chart certainly confirms for me but also there’s some stuff I wouldn’t necessarily expect to see amongst these other records like The Stooges’ “Fun House” and “Mechanical Animals” by Manson. I guess all in all, you enjoy some dark stuff that is generally more haunting and gloomy and I’m right there with you. I’m also quite intrigued by your brief soundoff on the album by Lajko Felix whom I’ve never heard of so I’ll probably add that to my list to check out at some point. Overall, love this list, just awesome top to bottom.

My Faves from Your List:

Hard to pick honestly, probably the two Depeche Mode albums, Is This Desire?, Post and Ill Communication

My Rec for you:

I’m gonna rec “Press Color” by Lizzy Mercier Descloux. It’s pretty dark but kinda catchy as well. I think it’s labelled as No Wave but I’m not good with genres.
7Cave In
Jupiter

JoyfulPlatypus:

Thoughts:

Oh yes, this is the good stuff. There’s a distinct respect for classics while also a keen sense for underrated projects by notable acts that you’ve latched on to in favor of rather than the most popular or sought after album by them. Most noticeably, Futures by Jimmy Eat World which is an awesome record and Proper Dose by Story So Far. Oddly enough, I’m actually listening to Beck’s Odelay for the first time as I’m writing this and yes, completely agree that the sampling is just insanely good. Also you simply cannot go wrong with the Ocarina of Time OST, just a beautiful compilation of sounds and motifs. The more I look at your 5’s, the happier it makes me for some reason, I just appreciate the love you have for some of these.

My Faves from Your List:

Very tough, probably Jar of Flies, A Night at the Opera and Stop Making Sense is so good!

My Rec for you:

Since you’re really into some alt rock: “Jupiter” by Cave In
8Myrkur
Folkesange

DoofDoof:

Thoughts:

You certainly do have a lot of 5’s but you’ve also rated over 10k albums so it’s completely understandable. First impressions, very diverse taste, definitely appreciative of smaller acts and artists with a few big names in the mix as well. I was reading your soundoff for the Jackie Leven album that only you have rated and I’m intrigued so I’m going to add that to my playlist asap. You also have the two most important Metallica records 5’d so I applaud you for that. Yeah, this list is chalk full of classics and underground favorites so there’s nothing to complain about here. I aspire to listen to as much music as you, my friend!

My Faves from Your List:

Automatic for the People, for sure! Also both your Nick Cave choices are fire.

My Rec for you:

Probably the toughest person to rec for so far, this is just a favorite of mine that you don’t have rated: “Folkesange” - Myrkur
9Takaru
There Can Be Only None

Zac124:

Thoughts:

My guy! The first person to have a Rush 5’d gets my ultimate praise! There’s definitely a unity between your 5’s in that they’re essential records from their respective artists; Your Dillinger picks, the NIN pick, the Opeth choices all very normal records to love by those bands. There is one particular record though that stands out to me and that’s Infinite Granite by Deafheaven, definitely an interesting choice for a 5 considering how controversial and sometimes, downright disdained that record is by Deafheaven stans. Ultimately, I also enjoyed that record so I’m glad you found it awesome! I also think you are the person that put me on to the Kinoko Teikoku record and I’m forever grateful, amazing record! Overall, yeah your 5’s make sense, they are logical and yeah, you have great taste!

My Faves from Your List:

Kinoko Teikoku, Angel Dust and Rush, of course!

My Rec for you:

A challenge for sure, I'm going to rec: "There Can Be Only None" - Takaru
10Aborted
RetroGore

evilford:

Thoughts:

I think you enjoy death metal, I’m not sure though, I could be wrong! What I know I’m not wrong about though is that outside of your death metal favorites, your taste in David Bowie is based; Low, Hunky Dory and Station to Station, all top tier! I do appreciate that you have a varied taste in death metal though, a lot of new names to me that I’ll have to keep in mind for the future when I eventually try to dive in more fully on death and black metal. One thing I’ve found extremely interesting with looking at everyone’s 5’s is that you each have a distinct preference, yet you all have an admiration for at least a few undeniable classics. In your case, Badmotorfinger, Aquemini, Enter the Wu-Tang, Bowie again. I love that there’s still a sense of respect and love for records like that. Great stuff!

My Faves from Your List:

Mental Vortex by Coroner is just one of the best, also you can’t go wrong with those two Isis albums!

My Rec for you:

“Retrogore” - Aborted
11Dan Swano
Moontower

syco722:

Thoughts:

Short and sweet, not too many to examine here but there’s still quite a bit of character in these choices. Clearly, there’s a love for heavy music with Meshuggah, Sikth and Knocked Loose but there’s an interesting inclusion of Mozart and Vivaldi? Very odd but I’m digging it. I feel like your relationship with music is something very unique in that it’s less about the genre or style and more of a vibe-based thing or experience-based thing. These records truly do not meld much with each other outside of a few djentier, heavy albums that are similar and I find that very fascinating. I do also have a feeling you listen to much more than you rate and that’s cool too!

My Faves from Your List:

Probably Pink Floyd and The Dear Hunter

My Rec for you:

You seem to have an affinity for proggy and weird so hopefully you enjoy my rec!: “Moontower” – Dan Swano
12Crippled Black Phoenix
A Love of Shared Disasters

OwMySnauze:

Thoughts:

Very few 5’s, seemingly picky with what you choose, and I respect that! Seemingly a big fan of late 90’s/early 2000’s post-hardcore which is totally a vibe. Very curious if you have the instrumental version of the Periphery album because you don’t like Spencer’s voice or if you just love a just djenty instrumental that isn’t interrupted by vocals in general. It seems like you enjoy some Animals as Leaders, Chon, etc so I wondering if it’s the latter. Overall, this feels fairly concise and straight to the point; I feel like I know what you have on most of the time but then occasionally, you’ll get freaky and get into something a bit out of your wheelhouse and that’s awesome!

My Faves from Your List:

Truthfully, none of your 5’s are albums that I particularly adore or have even heard in full. I’d probably say the Periphery album or Exoplanet.

My Rec for you:

My rec if you so choose to listen: “A Love of Shared Disasters” – Crippled Black Phoenix
13The Young Gods
L'eau Rouge

cylinder:

Thoughts:

You sir, have a lot of albums that you love that I am completely unfamiliar with. Just based on clicking on a few of the names that are completely foreign, I get the vibe that you do not care for mainstream. You prefer the challenge of listening to something less refined and produced than what the masses consume and in doing so, you have found a multitude of gems that you feel speak singularly to you. I feel like your 5’s are the kind of list that I would occasionally visit just to get a recommendation that will be completely outside of my own listening comfort zone. Of the few records that I am familiar with, Crippling Lack, which I believe you recommended to me at some point, is a fantastic record. Also, that Kenny Segal and billy woods record is underrated as fuck.

My Faves from Your List:

Maps and Crippling Lack, for sure.

My Rec for you:

This is tough, I picked one of the more obscure records that I love: “L’Eau Rouge” – The Young Gods
14Tomb Mold
The Enduring Spirit

brickhed:

Thoughts:

Alrighty, you definitely like loud, heavy and noisy, that much is clear. But oh yes, you also have Quest Master in there, a nice little dungeon synthy break from the absolute madness of Suffocation, Demilich and Devourment. Simply because I’m curious, when it comes to this level of heavy music, is it riffs, vocals, drumming, just overall angst and vibes of that type of music that draws you to it? I’m genuinely curious because I do love heavy music as well, but I do find a point where it just doesn’t appeal to me anymore when it becomes either too chaotic or intense for my tastes. You also seem to shun commercialism with your music taste which I respect; these are certainly not albums that will appeal to the masses! Consistent and solid are your 5’s, my friend!

My Faves from Your List:

Cryptopsy and Demilich stand out for me.

My Rec for you:

A bit of a newer rec for you: “The Enduring Spirit” – Tomb Mold
15Greet Death
New Hell

Futures:

Thoughts:

To begin, you have a nice mixture of classics and sort of unknown, lowkey, and/or underrated records in here. I feel like there’s definitely a bigger affinity for heavy music or loud rock music in general but stuff like Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Tim Hecker, etc showcase the desire for a variety of sounds in your life. You’re not easily perturbed by noisy and incoherence just based on your Dillinger picks and the black metal records you have listed, which is cool. I’m also just loving your taste in some of the more straightforward heavy music you have rated like Megadeth, Deftones, Metallica, etc. But overall dude, there’s a lot to unpack with your 5’s, it’s a bit all over the place in a good way!

My Faves from Your List:

Radio Amor is great, Rust in Peace is as classic as it gets, Monolith of Inhumanity is underappreciated.

My Rec for you:

You’re pretty openminded so I feel like I have some room with your rec: “New Hell” – Greet Death
16Slowbleed
The Blazing Sun, A Fiery Dawn

Emim:

Thoughts:

Despite your pie chart claiming that 29% of your ratings are metalcore, the majority of your 5’s are not metalcore, which I find rather interesting. It’s kind of similar to me where metalcore is a comfort genre that I listen to a lot, but I find most bands can’t write a 5/5 album to save their lives. There’s a few albums I did not expect to see in here like Dinosaur Jr, Michael Jackson, P.O.D. I’m sure some of the ratings are joke ratings which is totally fine, but the ones I hope are not a joke are the LOTR OST’s because those are absolute fire, some of the best movie music in the history of cinema! A criminally underrated pick you have on here is thegodmachine by Phinehas, super overlooked band and one of their best records for sure!

My Faves from Your List:

Innervisions is up there for Stevie Wonder for me, Painkiller is fucking sick and LOTR OST’s for the win!

My Rec for you:

“The Blazing Sun, A Fiery Dawn” – Slowbleed, some riffy, juicy metallic hardcore
17The Roots
undun

Efp123:

Thoughts:

Right away, having Camgirl 5’d is a major win and I’m proud of you as a person. Your 5’s are actually quite good and I’m finding a lot of overlap with my own tastes here. There’s the necessary classics like Aja, deathconsciousness and What’s Going On but there’s also an unabashed 5 for Coldplay which I might entirely disagree with you on but hey, to each their own! I think there’s a clear preference for heavier styles of music with the softer records belonging as outliers, but I think having those sorts of comfort records is so important to music listeners to really delve into music. Only listening to Artificial Brain all the time would be unhealthy so throwing some Marvin Gaye on in between is perfect for your sanity.

My Faves from Your List:

What’s Going On is just perfect, truly one of a kind. Infrared Horizon, my fave Brain record. Also, that debut Third Eye Blind, awesome!

My Rec for you:

I saw you only had one album by The Roots rated: “undun” The Roots
18Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac

RogueNine:

Thoughts:

Hey, you are a man of true taste. For having only one 5, I feel that you have made the right choice and that’s about all I can say.

My Faves from Your List:

Hard to say, gonna pass on it.

My Rec for you:

It’s only fair that I rec: “Fleetwood Mac” by Fleetwood Mac
19Vektor
Black Future

TheSonomaDude:

Thoughts:

I don’t know what Chipmunkson16speed entails but I feel like I have an obligation to give it a spin sometime. Other than that, I agree with you, your 5’s are excellent. Lots of variety, a bunch of classics, a bunch of underrated nuggets of gold. I also do appreciate your wonderful soundoff for …And Justice for All, really speaks to the power and fierceness of that record. Like many others prior, I love how your 5’s just don’t follow any sort of logical line; it’s very much a reflection of your quirks and love for a variety of sounds and I love that for you. My only criticism is that Boston album dude, I’m all for 70’s/80’s rock cheese but other than More Than a Feeling, that record is flat as hell. I won't hold it against you though! :D

My Faves from Your List:

Kind of Blue is a goated record, hard to argue that The Blue Album isn’t an absolute classic as well!

My Rec for you:

‘Black Future” – Vektor, vocals take some getting used to, but it riffs!
20Castle Rat
The Bestiary

AffableMartyr

Thoughts:

First off, congrats on 10k ratings, that is just an insane amount of music! I appreciate that despite so many albums, your 5’s are fairly sparse so you’re definitely a bit picky with slapping that high of a rating on something. You definitely have an “oldhead-metalhead” sort of vibe going with some love for Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Death, Black Sabbath, At the Gates, etc. While it is mostly metal based, those few non-metal selections are pretty on point, I.E. Notorious BIG, Third Eye Blind, UGK as well, really digging a majority of these that you have listed, honestly. I think your 5’s really exemplify consistency with your taste, it makes a lot of sense when you go through it, it’s not like you just have one hip hop 5, you’ve got a bunch, so it’s well balanced in my eyes!

My faves from your list:

Rust in Peace is perfect, can’t go wrong with any AIC but Dirt is peak, UGK is also just fire 100%

My rec:

“The Bestiary” – Castle Rat
21Warforged
The Grove | Sundial

pyroflare77

Thoughts:

A LOT of variety here with your 5’s, leaning older for the most part with a few exceptions like the State Faults album and Panopticon. I really appreciate the inclusion of the DK Country 2 soundtrack, the music from those games have been the soundtrack to my relaxation in the evening for many years so it definitely deserves some love. There is a general pattern that a good chunk of these are elite pieces of their respective artists discography, I.E. Hot Rats with Zappa, A Love Supreme with Coltrane, Rust in Peace, Mercyful Fate, etc. There’s also far and away the most world music with some City Pop, Kashiwa Daisuke, Igor Stravinsky as well. I’m really enjoying how balanced this feels, like multiple genres represented by multiple artists and bands. Great stuff!

My faves from your list:

DKC2, let’s go! Also, A Love Supreme is just magnificent as well as Timely!!

My rec:

“The Grove | Sundial” – Warforged, great blackened death metal record, a few years old
22Kamelot
Karma

Sevengill

Thoughts:

I certainly won’t be roasting you, my friend! You got some great 5’s in here and they speak directly to you and that’s what’s important. The general pattern leads me to believe that you mostly indulge in heavier music with exceptions of course but a lot of this stuff is very riff-heavy, definitely a bit older as well in terms of the like melo-death, classic rock and proggy metal. I like the random, out-of-place stuff like Coltrane, The Beach Boys, even Jane Doe by Converge feels a bit too “core” for a majority of your preferences. I feel like atmosphere is also super important to you with some very spacious post-metal, post-rock on here but also kind of an adrenaline junky with a desire for intensity, I.E. Painkiller, Walls of Jericho, and some of the black metal releases as well. Overall, really sick list of 5’s, my dude!

My faves from your list:

Lift Your Skinny Fists is perfect and Cosmo’s Factory is my favorite CCR record.

My rec:

“Karma” by Kamelot
23Rid Of Me
Access To The Lonely

mryrtmrnfoxxxy

Thoughts:

A lot of 5’s to sift through here, a good chunk of which are noisy rock of some sort which aligns with your pie chart nicely. You definitely have a nice mix between classics and more underground type stuff. Also, THREE Rush 5’s, you and I are best friends for life, top tier music taste. I feel like you’re the kind of person that prefers to enjoy music than be critical of music in a way and the fact that your 5’s are varied in terms of styles and genres, you just enjoy being in a unique sonic space without needing to worry too much about the semantics of the music. Loving your 5’s, lots of smile-worthy inclusions and some new names for me to look up later as well!

My faves from your list:

RUSH, Nina Simone album is a beautiful gem and Vulnicura is an underrated Bjork project.

My rec:

“Access to the Lonely” – Rid of Me, noisy alt rock, think PJ Harvey meets Cherubs
24Great American Ghost
Power Through Terror

sOnicx

Thoughts:

You are picky with your 5’s and I respect that. For having so few, the styles and genres they span is fairly sizeable from post-rock flavors of Explosions in the Sky to jazzy Coltrane to nu-metal worship with early LP and Northlane’s Alien. This is a special challenge to find a common denominator for because of how uniquely different all these 5’s are. I think you mostly enjoy big, wide sound. All these albums are very expansive in their atmosphere, production-wise, at least the ones I’m very familiar with. There’s almost a grandeur to these 5’s, like they are pinnacle pieces in music history for their respective sub-genres but also in these artists’ respective discographies. Very interesting set of 5’s, makes me want to listen to Alien again because it’s been like 3 or 4 years now.

My faves from your list:

A Love Supreme, Alien and Hybrid Theory

My rec:

“Power Through Terror” – Great American Ghost, chunky, riffy metalcore with some slick occasional melodies as
25Tarentel
From Bone To Satellite

Deathconscious

Thoughts:

There’s clearly two side to your personality: the hard side where you mosh and crank to some brutal death metal bands and then of course, there’s the sentimental, sad, gloomy side: getting lost in the words and atmospheres of Marked for Death and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Your simultaneous love for indie music and the hardest metal there out there can be jarring for some but luckily, I also have the same personality. You’re the first person to feature a Kreator album in your 5’s which gets you some brownie points with me and also, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space is so good! Haven’t listened to that album in a hot minute but I feel like I really need to now. Great list of 5’s, dude!

My faves from your list:

Coma of Souls is probably my favorite Kreator as well and Within the Realm of a Dying Sun is super sick as well!

My rec:

“From Bone to Satellite” – Tarentel, spacey post-rock, kind of reminiscent of Spiritualized
26Billy Woods
History Will Absolve Me

Drifter

Thoughts:

You are generally the guy I think of when it comes to hip hop on sput. It seems a majority of your favorites are from the 90’s, not necessarily favoring a certain locale but it has to go hard. Your appreciation for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony would make a close friend of mine very happy and I feel like I can also come to your 5’s to get some great rec’s on artists I haven’t really explored before. My one question is how can Encore be your favorite Eminem record?? I mean over The Eminem Show, Slim LP and Marshall LP? That’s kind of crazy to me but I respect your judgement, you know hip hop better than I ever will.

My faves from your list:

Probably Mobb Deep, I actually just listened to The Chronic for the first time yesterday and it was quite good. Also Madvillainy is just straight fire!

My rec:

I’m sure you’ll laugh at me trying to recommend a hip hop album to you, but I’ll do my best! “History Will Absolve Me” – billy woods
27Caligula's Horse
In Contact

Retter42

Thoughts:

I’d venture to say the Between the Buried and Me and Opeth are your two favorite bands, just a guess of course. There is a relative consistency with your 5’s mostly involving proggy, lengthy compositions and a knack for thinking outside the box sonically. I do appreciate your inclusion of the Raiders of the Lost Ark and Secret of Evermore soundtracks, both are excellent and I wish more people would actively listen and enjoy film scores, game soundtracks, etc, there’s so much amazingly beautiful music that people will never experience because it’s attached to another medium. Overall, I’m really digging these 5’s, a few of these I hold dear as well!

My faves from your list:

Rust in Peace, Terminal Redux is such a great record too. I Am Hollywood is also a banger of a record, representing southern metalcore in the best way!

My rec:

“In Contact” – Caligula’s Horse, my favorite record from these guys, very proggy with an alt-metal spin at times.

Thoughts:

You have a special talent in making people upset with your music opinion whether it’s your love for Sleep Token, your general disdain for post-rock or Swans-adjacent type music or your general defense of fairly run-of-the-mill metalcore/deathcore but that’s what I like about you. You stand by your taste, you love what you love and you make sure people know it too. Personally, I actually like quite a bit of your 5’s and hold some of these in quite high regard. Do I like Common Courtesy by ADTR? No. Do I like Banefyre by Crippled Black Phoenix? Absolutely, fantastic record. Your taste isn’t for everyone but it is for you and I respect that.

My faves from your list:

All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us holds a special place in my heart, it helped me through a very difficult period in my life. Also, I love that you also loved Quadeca’s new album, fantastic stuff and an easy 5 for me as well.

My rec:

“Altered Pasts” – thoughtcrimes, solid metalcore through and through.
29Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders & The LSO
Promises

Rowhaus

Thoughts:

For some reason, I literally just expected to see black metal and death metal albums because of the places I generally see you commenting but the diversity here is quite impressive. I mean there’s some serious classic rock stuff, reggae, electronic, nu metal, classical, you certainly are representing a majority of genres and for the most part, it’s all extremely good stuff. I generally assume that someone with a diverse listening experience just LOVES music and are bent on experiencing as much as they can and I feel like you fit that description based on your 5’s. You also do have those token records like Pet Sounds and The Doors so your respect for music is apparent as well. Good shit, my dude!

My faves from your list:

Violator is peak Depeche Mode, Selling England by the Pound is my favorite Genesis as well and Songs In The Key of Life is an undeniable classic, so many legendary tracks!

My rec:

“Promises” – Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders & The LSO

Thoughts:

Holy Buckethead! You did warn me, but I thought you might be exaggerating! Nevertheless, I must admit to you that I have never listened to a single Buckethead song in my life; I think he played on Chinese Democracy and that might be my only exposure to his playing so forgive me for my ignorance of his craft. I will say that based on the rest of your 5’s, if you enjoy a band or artist, you tend to enjoy quite a bit of their stuff a great deal. Lots of Iron Maiden 5’s, three Rush 5’s, three Protest the Hero 5’s, etc. I do appreciate the diversity in your 5’s as well, some hip hop here and there, punk, prog as well, a good variety of rock and metal. Overall, great list, a lot of these are favorites of mine as well!

My Faves from your list:

Having and 80’s Rush album is a based opinion and I love it, Grace Under Pressure is a gorgeous record.

My Rec:

“Birthmarks” - Bambara

0GuyMan0

Thoughts:

Alrighty, a lot of metal, a lot of classic rock, a lot of videogame OST’s which is sick and some occasional hip hop bangers as well, I dig very much. Right off the bat, a Dokken 5 is a rarity and you made the right choice with Under Lock and Key, that record is so fun and easily one of the best 80’s glam metal era albums. You’re also a GuyMan of true taste for those Stevie Wonder 5’s, no one can deny the funky soul chops on that fella. Along with many other sputters, you have a very diverse interest in music with a stronger affinity for rock and metal but the fact that you are open-minded and willing to explore a variety of sounds and styles in super cool. Good stuff, my GuyMan.

My Faves from your list:

Songs from the Big Chair is my go to record for testing speakers and headphones, one of the best sounding records ever. Also, Stained Class, best JP record for me as well!

Thoughts:

Immediately, you’re very selective with your 5’s and they definitely lean old school metal with a couple exceptions. You definitely have a supreme love for early thrash and black metal, but you also seem to enjoy quite a bit of spacious atmosphere and reverb in your music by the This Will Destroy You, Lantlos and Hammock picks. There’s definitely something to be said about a band being able to weave intense aggression with beautiful, open soundscapes; that amalgamation of sounds is quite addictive and mesmerizing. Your 5’s are excellently balanced to your tastes and I feel like I can imagine your regular listening habits just based off the handful of albums that you love.

My Faves from your list:

That debut Megadeth is a treasure, debut Mercyful Fate is excellent as well, debut Celtic Frost is also a classic in it’s own rights.

Thoughts:

Your 5’s are quite all over the place in the best way, just such a diverse mixture of genres and styles, old and new, classics and underground, your appreciation for music of all kinds is genuine and thoughtful. Having over 5k ratings is a great deal of music to have consumed so having as many 5’s as you makes sense and must make you quite a happy person when you fall asleep at night knowing that you’ve experienced some of the best stuff in recorded history. I love your commitment to listening to full discographies of artists, you want to see the ins and outs of their creative histories and that’s sick. Overall, these are some awesome 5’s, I have a few of these as 5’s myself and a good chunk of them are just great albums that everyone should experience.

My Faves from your list:

Swordfishtrombones is an underrated Tom Waits project, All Things Must Pass is a masterpiece, The Grand Wazoo is my favorite Zappa record!

My Rec:

Thoughts:

A majority of your 5’s lean newer which is cool, you definitely seem to have your ear to the streets with what is popping off right now. Glad to see the love for those two Crippling Alcoholism record, also that excellent Greyhaven EP from last year. You are definitely not genrephobic but your taste does appear to fall into heavier styles of music with the occasional emo, fuzz rock record here and there. There’s a few undeniable classics too, Dummy by Portishead, the debut RATM, The Cure’s Disintegration as well so you definitely have a desire to explore some older material that falls within the confines of your taste. I feel a lot of people forget that the music they listen to today was influenced by fantastic earlier works and they fail to explore a bit, but you seem to have it under control. Great stuff!

My Faves from your list:

A Tear in the Fabric of Life is my favorite Knocked Loose project, Panopticon is awesome as well!

Thoughts:

Don’t worry, I stayed my distance but even from way back here, your 5’s look supremo, my friend. Some true classics in there, some underground picks that I love as well like the Novos Baianos album and Manu Chao album as well. You seem to really enjoy some challenging, noisy music which is sick but you also can’t help yourself when it comes to the wonderful and joyous Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. Speaking of soundtracks, The Silent Hill games and the music from them is amazing, underrated and underappreciated for sure. Don’t be so shy about your 5’s, you’ve got great taste!

My Faves from your list:

Fetch by Melt-Banana is so perfectly chaotic, love that album! Station to Station is in my top three Bowie records as well and Heart of the Congos which I only heard recently is a stunner, a mind-blowing record.

Thoughts:

The corners of the music world that you find yourself in is fascinating to me. Having a Cannibal Corpse 5, Green Day 5’s, Aphex Twin 5’s and Beatles 5’s, it seems that you have had many different phases and experiences in life that have led to wide array of listening patterns. Your love for mid 2000’s emo is a vibe, your appreciation for the classics are few but they are excellent, Crimson by Edge of Sanity, Dookie, Ride the Lightning, Far Away from the Sun, etc. You definitely have the variety to soundtrack the various emotions and rites of passage that we endure during life so you are prepared at any moment for a dance party, severe depression or angst-fueled rage. I respect it, great list of 5’s!

My Faves from your list:

The Beatles s/t is my favorite Beatles project, I think we all secretly or not so secretly love The Black Parade and Get Scared, underrated scene band, brings me back to high school!

Thoughts:

Your list of 5’s gives me whiplash is a great way! You’ve got that danceable, pop enjoyer side of that cranks up the Madonna and Carly Rae Jepsen tunes at the party. I also assume that you enjoy sitting in the rain contemplating your existence while jamming some Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Then you can also share some bonding moments with your father or father figure while listening to Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd. You must have also had an emo phase at some point because your Silverstein 5 just automatically means that you dyed your hair and wore vans everywhere, even on hikes through the woods. Your choice in albums is just insanely good, a majority of these are just classics and undeniable.

My Faves from your list:

Ray of Light is also my favorite Madonna record, Discovering the Waterfront is chalk full of emo classics!

Thoughts:

Love you too, my friend! With a majority of your 5’s either falling into hip hop or some sort of alt-rock, I feel like my natural conclusion is that you enjoy catchy rhythms but also enjoy a good, distorted guitar but not anything too heavy. You also seem to have a clear respect for classic records in the hip hop genre like Wu-Tang, Nas, Dr. Dre, etc. You have that same sort of respect for classic alt rock like Slint, Tool, Hum, QOTSA, etc. Overall, these records that you love show me a willingness to explore and expand your horizons in a multitude of directions without sacrificing a strong rhythm section and some distinguishable guitar licks. Great stuff my friend!

My Faves from your list:

The s/t AIC record is truly underrated, I mean Frogs and Over Now are just crazy good. Also, the two Kendrick Lamar 5’s are the correct albums to have 5’d.

“My Love is Cool” – Wolf Alice
