Wilt's top albums of the decade so far
I picked out favorite moments from my personal top albums of the 2020s |
| 35 | | Predatory Void Seven Keys To The Discomfort of Being
Favorite moment - at the 8-and-a-half minute mark of closing track Funerary Vision when the vocals go down to a whisper - check out the live set of this album if you like what you hear |
| 34 | | Prisoner Putrid | Obsolete
Favorite moment - in track 1, Flesh Dirge, when the buildup kicks in with duel screams and a fun high-hat led drum pattern |
| 33 | | Infant Island Obsidian Wreath
Favorite moment - the bass intro to track 5, Veil, which transitions smoothly from prior track Clawing, Still … the Greet Death feature is a close second |
| 32 | | Hidden Mothers Erosion / Avulsion
Favorite moment - the drum section around the 4-and-a-half minute mark of track 5, The Grey, where it switches up a few times |
| 31 | | The Barbarians of California And Now I'm Just Gnashing My Teeth
Favorite moment - the divebomb at the 1-minute-10-second mark of track 8, By the Time I Get to Mexico - still love that Aaron Bruno is keeping this as his main project with Awolnation coming to a pause |
| 30 | | Body Void Atrocity Machine
Favorite moment - the 5-minute mark of track 5, Divine Violence, where the guitars really sound like whirring mechnical hornets armed with jackhammers for stingers |
| 29 | | Wednesday Rat Saw God
Favorite moment - it’s gotta be the crescendo of track 2, Bull Believer, about 6 minutes in where everything cascades and folds over into itself |
| 28 | | Messa The Spin
Favorite moment - that intro synth on track 3, Fire on the Roof… can’t wait to see them at Damnation in November |
| 27 | | Sleep Paralysis Sleep Paralysis
Favorite moment - I feel like this album is best summed up by track 4, You Can Never Run Fast Enough where it feels like a silent film directed by imps… I don’t think I’d want another album of this exact thing but it’s a very promising start |
| 26 | | Dimscua Dust Eater
Favorite moment - I really like when track 1, Elder Bairn, hits its full stride around the 6-minute mark and just goes for it - definitely a band to watch if you aren’t already! |
| 25 | | Rolo Tomassi Where Myth Becomes Memory
Favorite moment - on track 6, Drip, when Eva goes “take my hand, let’s slip beneath the surface” I just find that to be such a beautiful phrase |
| 24 | | Model/Actriz Pirouette
Favorite moment - the crisp stick clicks leading off track 9, Ring Road, really itch my brain properly… also they’ve been crushing it live so that’s super cool to see |
| 23 | | Portrayal of Guilt We Are Always Alone
Favorite moment - the last 25 seconds of track 4, It’s Already Over, but a runner up is three tracks later on Garden of Despair where the outro soundscape is so cool to me |
| 22 | | Uboa Impossible Light
Favorite moment - around the 2-minute-25-second mark of track 3, A Puzzle where we see the album at it’s most subdued into some of its harshest sounds |
| 21 | | Knocked Loose You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To
Favorite moment - Ok so I’m going to stop listing track numbers sorry, unsure if it’s helpful, but Moss Covers All into Take Me Home, specifically the seamless transition, is immaculate |
| 20 | | Prostitute Attempted Martyr
Favorite moment - that rising bass driving though all of the track Joumana Kayrouz |
| 19 | | Birds in Row Gris Klein
Favorite moment - there are so many to pick from but I love when the bassist Q comes in on Confettis - a runner up is on the next track Noah where “a road leading into darkness” feels like it’s being said by someone 3 feet away from me |
| 18 | | Static Dress Rouge Carpet Disaster
Favorite moment - The track Welcome in, aka verylongtitle, has one of the most infectious choruses on here and pulls it off twice in 2 minutes |
| 17 | | The Armed Ultrapop
Favorite moment - ALL FUTURES DESTRUCTION yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah - a runner up is on BAD SELECTION, with its violent faith in better days lyric |
| 16 | | Just Mustard Heart Under
Favorite moment - in Still around the 3-minute-20-second mark where tambourines come in.. excited for what comes next |
| 15 | | Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats Nell’ Ora Blu
Favorite moment - the last 3 minutes to Pomeriggio di novembre nel parco… in particular will feel most at home for fans of prior Uncle Acid albums |
| 14 | | Outlander (UK) Acts of Harm
Favorite moment - the snare tone closing out the final track has soundtracked so many late night walks for me |
| 13 | | Faetooth Remnants of the Vessel
Favorite moment - the chorus to Saturn Devouring His Son is huge - can’t wait for my pre-order of upcoming 2nd album Labyrinthine to arrive |
| 12 | | Noise Trail Immersion Tutta la morte in un solo punto
Favorite moment - Spire di Sangue’s twisting guitar lines |
| 11 | | Seahaven Halo of Hurt
Favorite moment - the ending to Void, which goes so well into Moon’s kinetic momentum - a couple notable runner ups for me are the bass tone in Dandelion and Eraser’s lyric switchup in its final moments |
| 10 | | Honningbarna Soft Spot
Favorite moment - the bass on King Spud’s last minute when its super audible in the mix |
| 9 | | Great Falls Objects Without Pain
Favorite moment - on Ceilings Inch Closer at the 3-minute-17-second mark when the cymbal is tapped a few times in a fun repeating motif for the rest of the track |
| 8 | | Foxing Foxing
Favorite moment - the second half of Looks Like Nothing, but like most albums on here there are so many standout moments |
| 7 | | Still (UK) A Theft
Favorite moment - it’s not one specific moment but rather the guitar tone throughout this entire album, it’s just so piercing |
| 6 | | Thou Umbilical
Favorite moment - the little drum fill that kicks off I Feel Nothing When You Cry |
| 5 | | BRUIT The Machine Is Burning...
Favorite moment - when Industry hits its peak |
| 4 | | Deafheaven Lonely People With Power
Favorite moment - Winona is the standout track for me, but around the 3-minute mark of Body Behavior we get into a lush groove and I also think Incidental II with Jae Matthews from Boy Harsher ends in a really cool electro industrial section, I’d love to see how that plays out live |
| 3 | | White Ward False Light
Favorite moment - around the 11-minute mark of the title track, but that entire song is particualrly immense |
| 2 | | Crippling Alcoholism With Love From a Padded Room
Favorite moment - the siren-sounding synth line that comes up on the final chorus of Satan Is The One… can’t wait for Camgirl to come out! |
| 1 | | Gatherers " ( mutilator. ) "
Favorite moment - Ok so many, twelve omaha solemn certainty is undeniable, but a few others are Rich’s vocal run in opening track massalette on verse 2, Adam’s drumming on ad nauseam, i drown, and how danceable I find suffocator to be |
