River Runs Red

JUNE 1ST - REC'D BY JRLIKESTODANCE

ANALYSIS: Hell yeah, starting June off right! Thought this was gonna be standard grunge/alt-rock but man it is not that lol. Definitely rooted in those sounds but has a sludgey, doomy atmosphere, some Peter Steele-esque vocals and some suuuuper filthy riffs. Kinda reminds me of Draconian era Paradise Lost at times tbh. Not what I was expecting in a good way! Definitely dirtier and doomier than any alt-metal I’ve ever heard. Sick shit.

JUNE 2ND - REC'D BY MYSTAGOGUS

ANALYSIS: This is the musical equivalent of what I feel falling into an endless black abyss feels like. Creatures you’ve never heard of clawing and scratching at you without being seen. This is some suuuuuper eerie and twisted dark/space ambient with industrial and noise tendencies as well. Super dense and claustrophobic sounding stuff. Just how I like my ambient music most of the time tbh. The only knock is that it does drag a bit at times.

JUNE 3RD - REC'D BY FUTURES

ANALYSIS: Futures bro ilysm but this is not my thing at all. I love emo but I need some sort of energy and this feels too laid back to me at least 90% of the time. Almost slowcore-ish in a way. There are some nice melodies throughout and the vocals are fantastic. I’m just struggling to find something to hang on to here personally. It’s not the album, it’s me. Or maybe it is the album. Who knows? Either way, just not my bag lol.

JUNE 4TH - REC'D BY BRICKHED

ANALYSIS: Alright, I really have 2 big problems with this. First off, the production kinda fucking sucks. Idk if it’s the version I jammed but it’s very muddled imo. Second off, I love glitch and IDM but a lot of this just sounds messy. It has 12 ideas going on at one time and doesn’t allow each one to breathe properly. Those things put together equalled a bad/overall boring experience. Sorry Brick lol.

JUNE 5TH - REC'D BY PYROFLARE77

ANALYSIS: Man these guys never disappoint. Had heard and loved the 2 albums after this but for some reason hadn’t jammed this. In typical Cormorant fashion they mix a warm and non-wank style of 70s prog riffage with doomy black metal bits and atmospheric post-metal atmosphere. Almost an hour long yet there are hardly any lulls in entertainment. Vocals sound like a troll popping out from under his bridge with  phlegmy shouts berating your ear drums. Even some female vocals are thrown in during the softer breaks and the solos are killer when they pop up. Albums rips.

JUNE 6TH - REC'D BY ARTHROPOD

ANALYSIS: I love some lofi gothic metal and that’s exactly what we have here. Reminds me a lot of early Anathema with some death doom tendencies as well. This one is very synth driven and would be perfect to jam first thing in the morning on a rainy day. Riffage is extremely melodic yet still hard hitting. Vocals are the highlight alternating between high pitched falsettos and haunting screams. A bit overlong at a tad over an hour but rules hard overall.

JUNE 7TH - REC'D BY FEARYHYEVIL

ANALYSIS: First experience with these guys and it is a damn good one! This is how you do wankless, non-cheesy prog to perfection. A nice mix of prog metal and prog rock. The heavier parts are more my speed but the soft rock parts really get the feels going. Riffs are on point during the heavy aspects and kinda has a “raincloud”-ish feel a la Damnation by Opeth. Vocals are the highlight by a mile though. This guy can sing his ass off and he doesn’t come off as a pompous douche like a lot of prog frontment. Excited to check more from these guys.

JUNE 8TH - REC'D BY FLASHMOBBA

ANALYSIS: The logical progression after Bitches’ Brew and man it hits hard. Maybe not quite as hard as its predecessor but still. Miles continues his foray into jazz fusion, mixing in psychedelic rock and prog rock with all of his silky smooth sax sounds. Even when combining all of these sounds, Miles still knows how to make his music sound like it comes from a high class, late night jazz club. The man just doesn’t miss.

JUNE 9TH - REC'D BY TYMAN128

ANALYSIS: Good lord what a banger. This one is part alt-rock, part post-rock and part post-hardcore and they all meld together perfectly. The atmosphere is dense yet warm and inviting at the same time. The Christian lyrics also resonate with me personally and the mixture of lyrics/vocals are absolutely serene and chill inducing. What a great voice. Synth work here is subtle but incredible. Riffage can also be heavier than expected at times. Such a great album.

JUNE 10TH - REC'D BY KUSANGII

ANALYSIS: Really friggin sweet blend of power metal and progressive metal with folk/celtic influences. The riffage is actually super heavy for a power metal album. They’re fast but not in a shitty mindless way, but in a way that makes it feel like lightning striking. The vocals are intense while still having that operatic edge. Folk elements are subtle at times but extremely well placed. A bit overlong but still excellent overall.
