| | Good songs with bad lyrics | | 1 | | Alexisonfire Alexisonfire
PULMONARY ARCHERY
“Won’t apologize, 1977 was a long time ago” “There is little hope for the white man, So hop on your rainbow, Ride it” Maybe it’s just me, but I dont think it’s the place of teenagers in a post hardcore band to get all worked up and make statements about race relations. | | 2 | | Porcupine Tree Fear of a Blank Planet
FEAR OF A BLANK PLANET
This is one of those cases where the singer locks themselves into a vocal melody and by the 14th stanza has run out of options and has to throw a hail mary with a line like “My face is Mogadon”. Steven Wilson finds a way to mention how he's not "here" in almost every Porcupine Tree song which really isn't that deep and Radiohead already did it. | | 3 | | Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
DEGAUSSER
The lyrics are solid 90% of the way through, but then Jesse Lacey and his giant ego decides that he can pull off a nursery-style outro with tons of vocal fry. “Well you're my favorite bird and when you sing, I really do wish you’d wear my ring, No matter what they say I am still the king“. I’m sorry you had to read that. Makes me sick. | | 4 | | Raunchy Confusion Bay
I GET WHAT I SEE
Sometimes I’ll give a singer credit when English isn’t their first language. But this one takes it too far. It always hurts your case when I can instantly think of lyrics that would make more sense. “You might say that I’m evil, I don’t care about ugly people” is just so laughable and could work so much better if replaced with something like “You wanna share the needle, I don’t care about other people”. | | 5 | | Snow Strippers The Snow Strippers
GENOCIDE
“Genocide, All around us, I don’t think you’re honest” “Cause you can find my soul, I’m waiting for it” What? Is the song about infidelity? Or is it about trying to find true love? Do they even care? Another song where I can instantly think of better lyrics. “Genocide, On the rise, I can feel it all around me” couples nicely with “I use my mind control, In ways I shouldn’t” but instead, we have more vapid electronic music. To me, this is the largest distinction between Snow Strippers and Crystal Castles (who they are clearly trying to emulate). Thematic depth and distinct sound seem out of the reach for Snow Strippers, but hopefully they prove me wrong in the future. | | 6 | | Bad Bunny Un Verano Sin Ti
MOSCOW MULE
Do yourself a favor and never look up the English translation to these lyrics and just pretend they're not about something incredibly stupid. | | 7 | | New Order Substance
TRUE FAITH
Poor, poor New Order. Such raw talent and musical prowess, yet there was no replacing Ian Curtis. And the decision to just have the guitarist sing in his place was admirable but ill advised. Not only can he not sing in tune, but the lyrics are severely lacking in substance.
“I feel so extraordinary, Something’s got a hold on me, I get this feeling I’m in motion, A sudden sense of liberty, I don’t care ‘cause I’m not there, And I don’t care if I’m here tomorrow, Again and again I’ve taken too much, Of the things that cost you too much”. | | 8 | | Slowdive Souvlaki
SOUVLAKI SPACE STATION
With its groundbreaking, psychedelic wall of sound and larger than life atmosphere, you’d think the hardly audible lyrics would be about something grandiose and otherworldly like space or internal struggle. Nope, more filler lyrics about not being satisfied in a relationship? Alrighty then. I guess that’s what we come to expect from teenagers in a slowcore band, but it would have been nice if they branched out a little bit. | |

05.19.25 | 2 and 3 are sitting ducks but entirely accurate (many other BN songs you could have used, but Degausser is defs the biggest waste of potential)
don't rly get the need for grandiose lyrics in 8 though, nothing about that song demands a lyrical focus to begin with and although its actual words are p means-to-an-end there are enough poetic flourishes across the album (which is p much *entirely* about relationships) that it doesn't strike a sour note | onionbubs
05.19.25 | polaroids of polar bears is prob my aof pick, album rips but even george would admit that album is not his best lmao | Hawks
05.19.25 | 3 is hilarious lmao. | RVAHC13
05.19.25 | The entire decade of the 90’s | JohnnyoftheWell
05.19.25 | every worthwhile Nine Inch Nail song yep lol
also hmm
Pavement - Type Slowly (usually dig their bs lyrics, but this one is way out)
The Dillinger Esc Plan - Phone Home and like half this album
Glassjaw - Lovebites and Razorlines and like half this album
Modest Mouse - Lives
The Beatles - Glass Onion | anode
05.19.25 | Oh yeah ruiner by nin is definitely an honorable mention.”how’d you get so hard? How’d you get so long?” in that creepy undertone. Like just why trent! That song had so much potential
And yeah 8 doesn’t really take away from the greatness of that track but def a lil disappointing when i came across them | Rowan5215
05.19.25 | nah True Faith is perfect, there are some truly terrible Barney lyrics in that discog but I can't imagine touching that song | anode
05.19.25 | most new order songs are candidates, that one is just one of my favorites so it took the heat | Rowan5215
05.19.25 | Every Little Counts would have to be my pick there lmao, also the pleasure zone lyric in Perfect Kiss yikes | AnimalForce1
05.19.25 | NGL, even with that cringe lyric, I still adore Ruiner. It's one of my favorite songs from Downward Spiral just because of how addictive and unhinged that beat is | tectactoe
05.19.25 | Most death metal songs tbh lol | lz41
05.20.25 | 'Africa' by Toto
"As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti"
Firstly, the analogy. Kilimanjaro (a mountain) rises like Olympus (also a mountain). Also, Kilimanjaro does not rise above the Serengeti because they are HUNDREDS of kilometres apart. | brickhed
05.20.25 | "Most death metal songs tbh lol"
you telling me poorly written lyrics about gore is not what you're looking for | fogza
05.21.25 | I like True Faith's lyrics tbh Also, I love Curtis but it's an odd critique worrying about Sumner being out of tune. | alamo
05.21.25 | "I don’t care about ugly people" is actually very cunt | Dedes
05.21.25 | Probably low hanging fruit but
"To understand me you have to stand under me" off of 6 foot 7 foot by Lil Wayne gives me a hearty lol
Which ig gives it some intrinsic value | bach
05.21.25 | http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/vehemence/godwascreated.html
"I shove myself gently into her, gasping she smiles and cries
Her blood streams from the vagina, she used to be a virgin whore
(Fucking her, this is my Fantasy!)
Father knew better than to take that away
His dick only went in her mouth and her ass" | Dedes
05.21.25 | Oh yeah that album is a prime example of ignoring DM lyrics cause that is maybe the most wicked offender
The riffs rule
But the lyrics are the kind of poetry only a depraved 14 year old could write | bach
05.21.25 | if only it was a non-english speaking teenager who wrote them instead of a grown man from Arizona who's been in the band for like 8 years | Deathconscious
05.21.25 | Like every Departures song. | Dedes
05.21.25 | Piss take
Absolutely
Rancid
Piss take | denboy
05.21.25 | lz41 made even worse by the fact that it's an absolute clunker of a line rhythmically | IsisScript80
05.21.25 | "Avatar" by Swans feels this, for me. It NEEDED better lyrics, because it's going somewhere sublime, but the words aren't hitting it.
"The Dillinger Esc Plan - Phone Home and like half this album"
Common issue with the band. The clean sung bit of "I Wouldn't If You Didn't" from 'Option Paralysis' is prime example here.
And disagree about "True Faith", but good thread topic. | anode
05.21.25 | i cant believe so many people are defending true faith lyrics. that first verse is such a jumbled mess of cliches and he has to repeatedly slow down and speed up to try to make the lyrics flow and they still dont. "When I was a very small boy
Very small boys talked to me" what!
and on the topic of ian curtis being out of tune. 1 he has an incredible voice which easily makes up for it and 2 his lyrics are poetic and sad so it actually seems quite fitting. neither of which can be said for sumner | bach
05.21.25 | one time they did the song live, made it even worse and said "When I was a very small boy, Michael Jackson played with me. Now that we've grown up together, he's playing with my willy." | anode
05.21.25 | good god | anode
05.21.25 | @alamo its very cunt but its not "evil" lmao "im bad, im a bad bad boy" hahahah | arapinho1
05.21.25 | True Faith is not bad | Cygnatti
05.21.25 | Lyrics in 8 are mostly fine tbh. Isn't basically the entire album about breakups and relationships? I don't see why that one should need to be any different.
3 is... yeah I get it lol. Still prob their best song. | fogza
05.21.25 | Different strokes I guess, I think it's very effective at getting across the isolation and loss of innocence from drug use. Maybe not Ian Curtis level but perfectly serviceable. Those live lyrics are shit though, agreed | anode
05.21.25 | @cygnatti I suppose that’s true, it’s just such an outlier from the other tracks stylistically it’d be nice if the lyrics reflect that but I get it
@fogza fair enough, just lines like the ones I quoted come off very uninspired and clunky to me. Tbh I can totally get past it though cause it amuses me and the music is so top tier |
