Metallica - The Unforgiven
My gateway into metal. Played on the radio during a late night car drive when I was a child, that's the most unforgettable Metallica experience.
Linkin Park - New Divide
The Rasmus - Livin' In a World Without You
Iron Maiden - Wasting Love
These are the soundtrack to my childhood.
Bullet For My Valentine - Watching Us Die Tonight
I had known this song for some time, but I've only formed a connection with it after somebody that I used to know turned away. I used to take long walks across the town and sing this song, and it helped to cope.
Karnivool - Sewn and Silent
This one's for someone I actually loved and still love. I never spoke to her about us drifting apart, I was scared to even talk about casual topics because I felt like a burden. The final couple of months for me were just touching and tearing back, silencing my thoughts and desperately wanting her to tell me it's my fault instead of watching her faltering on my horizon. The lyrics kind of seemed like nonsense before, but torment has opened my eyes.
Parkway Drive - Dying to Believe
On the sunny days when people were hanging out and enjoying their lives, I used to sit out of sight and jam this. Ire was with me when no man was, and I'll defend that album to death.
Prima Vista - Screaming
The vocalist was the most amazing person to meet.
Poets of the Fall - Overboard
It helped me move on. I felt like someone told me that I'll be fine and I believed them.
Thousand Foot Krutch - All I Need to Know
I was watching fireworks late at night and desperately wanted to cry, but I couldn't. |
brickhed
05.13.25 | that's a crazy thing to cut to
but other albums would be
Scratch Acid - S/T
The Jesus Lizard - Head, Goat, Down (Head takes me back the most)
Henry Threadgill - Too Much Sugar for a Dime
Tipographica - S/T, God Says I Can't Dance
Happy Family - Tossco
again that's all i can remember |
DaveyMonsoon
05.13.25 | Dunno if I can come up with 10, but one that definitely comes off the top of my head is Bastard by Devin Townsend. I still remember listening to Ocean Machine for the first time so long ago and hearing it and being blown away by the main riff. It's still one of my favorites of his as well. |

05.14.25 | @zakalwe
Sorry that Moby song brings back bad memories for you. That just reminds me of going to the beach. I do love that James song
@jrlikestodance
That’s like all the music my mom didn’t want me listening to growing up lol
@arthropod
Your first Metallica experience was better than mine, I got started on Reload. Also haven’t listened to Karnivool in a while
@brickhed
Shit happens lol, also I learned about Jesus Lizard from Clerks like a lot of people
@DaveyMonsoon
I’ve had legions of people on here recommend me Devin Townsend and I still haven’t listened to him. Good place to start? |

Hybrid - If I Survive (listened to this a lot when I needed courage for talking to my first love)
Portishead - All Mine (back of the car, friend's parents this time)

BBU - Chi Don’t Dance (uhhhh frat days? embarrassing white boy behavior?)
Boards of Canada - 1969 (intro music to Harold Pinter’s Dumb Waiter, co-directed with a buddy. We tortured our 2 actors, also buddies, rehearsed on a mezzanine backstage with only a single lightbulb, they changed the ending on the last night and we got in big trouble for that, mostly bc of the stage guns)
The Flaming Lips - Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell (late nights doing Latin hw)
Grouper - Moon is Sharp (days of drinking, chain smoking, the pre-pandemic fever dream)
MGMT - Time to Pretend (my first job! lifeguarding! had to save a kid on day 1 and it was boring/downhill from there)

Weird Al Yankovic - Albuquerque (performed as a Boy Scout skit. still know every single word)

Avenged Sevenfold - A Little Piece of Heaven (used to be my go to shower song as a kid to make sure i didn’t take too long of one lmao)

Windmills - Broken Record (8th grade, dark souls 1, first rap album i ever liked)
Michael Jackson - Butterflies (first song i threw on after finishing junior year of high school for some reason lol)

RVAHC13
01.29.26 | In Da Wind lol, haven’t heard that one in a minute
My music taste early on was definitely an amalgam of stuff I heard on the radio and what my family listened to. Wasn’t really until around 5th/6th grade I started to branch out and listen to stuff that was uniquely mine |
jrlikestodance
01.29.26 | In Da Wind is a such a classic. I had the same journey until I found Slipknot in 7th grade myself RVA. Before MTV, BET and VH1 and the radio were my best friends |
