sleeplog25(3) ... and also (4)(5)(6)

i stopped doing these for March after a big list in April and having done these every month for over 2 years BUT having skipped a month realised that music exploration when busy is a lot easier with a reminder of what youve recently heard SO doing a retrospective MARCH list and APRIL in one ig
1Mount Eerie
Ocean Roar

2nd March 2025

Black Metal / Post Rock / Weird Folk [2012]

Spent first part of March jamming all the major PHIL releases that i still hadn't heard. This one was perhaps my fave / unexpected jam gem / weird discog outliner; thunderous wet big small intimate deep serene but loud. [4] also retried Winds Poem and Clear Moon neither of which i originally liked and both of which i am still mid on eh
2Mount Eerie
Sauna

2rd March 2025

Drone / Weird Folk [2015]

Also this what the fuck this and Ocean on the lower rating average but both magical thick soupy releases v easy to get lost in albums like forests [4].

in short order i then ordered a bunch more vinyls from his store 60 dollars shipping kinda fucked but not so bad when youre buying bulk
3Mount Eerie
Live In Copenhagen

7th March 2025

Lo-Fi / Indie Folk [2004]

Properly special little release. The Dawn songs, before Dawn was released, played v intimate long form chatty live set, with some other PHIL microphones era songs, and oddities. perfect and essential. [4.5]
4Mount Eerie
Black Wooden Ceiling Opening

9th March 2025

Slaker Rock / Noise Rock / Blackened Folk [2008]

Another oddity. Another fun. The Microphones unUnplugged. Loud and lazy and hazy and brilliant. [4]
5David Bowie
Station to Station

10th March 2025

Art Rock / Funk Rock [1976]

Did alot of relistening in March. Jammed alot of the Dylan records id heard, some Eno, and then early Bowie (ziggy album waaaay better than my teen brain comprehended. Also dug into the Bowie i hadnt heard. This. [4]
6David Bowie
Low

12th March 2025

Art Rock / Ambient [1977]

And then this one. Eno-y. Jank-y. 2-in-1. Sway. [4]
7Brian Eno
Another Green World

13th March 2025

Art Rock / Ambient [1975]

Speaking of which. Used to have 3'd, bumped to [4], it's v listenable but also a weird head space to get yourself into, the ambient but not, engaged but loosely. [4]
8Admiral Angry
Albania

14th March 2025

Grindcore / Noise [2007/2024]

Fun seeing the nuts and bolts that eventually formed BUSTER in their juvenile form here. Still shakes foundations, just lacks replay value maturity a final form. [3.5]
9Racebannon
In the Grips of the Light

14th March 2025

Noise Rock / Post-Hardcore [2002]

Playing (replaying) Burnout Paradise with this sassing about in the background. Weird album. [3.5] not sure what sput thread prompted me to check
10Ludwig van Beethoven
"Pathétique" Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13

14th March 2025

Classical [1798]

My dad used to play this alot around the house. I told him I was getting into classical so he rec'd. Such a thumper. [4] probs higher
11Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Sonata No14 C-sharp minor,Op.27No2

15th March 2025

Classical [1801]

Love the way so many classical releases get packaged with other pieces and you end up on a binge. Remember liking this less, less visceral, but very pretty. [4]
12Ludwig van Beethoven
"Appassionata" Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57

15th March 2025

Classical [1807]

The most metal of the three. m/ [4]
13Fripp and Eno
Evening Star

15th March 2025

Ambient / Drone [1975]

Love the first half; don't care for all the metal variants. [3.5]
14Franz Schubert
"Great" Symphony No. 9 in C major, D.944

15th March 2025

Classical [1827]

Unfinished I LOVE. This was too big. Prefer No8's understatedness. [3.5]
15Bjork
Debut

16th March 2025

Art Pop [1993]

I have tried listening to bjork so many times, get 1 or 2 songs into the respective album, and go "eh" and stop. Not sure why; these are hardly unpleasant listens. First album made all way through first bjork is first bjork. interesting enough to make me want to try the rest, but not something i feel ill rush back to. feels like a debut. [3.5]
16Sodom
Persecution Mania

19th March 2025

Thrash [1987]

This was a fuck it listen to something new its been days kind of vibe. It's great. Snotty, evil, reliable. [3.5]
17Clifford Brown and Max Roach
Study in Brown

20th March 2025

Bop [1955]

Got Nothing on tHeir 1955 s/t debut but great early hard bopping with the dums and tubs and such. [3.5]
18Kishi Bashi
151a

22nd March 2025

Art/Indie/Chamber Pop [2012]

Partner has been listening to this obsessively for years so i kind of knew the contours here vaguely. Vague recollections of lighighight being better. Great pop caNDY here. [3.5]
19Does It Offend You, Yeah?
You Have No Idea...

28th March 2025

New Rave / Dance Punk / Indietronica [2008]

idekm. [3]
20Deafheaven
Lonely People with Power

29th March 2025

Blackgaze [2025]

I mean its alright like [3].
21Max Roach
It's Time

29th March 2025

Avant-Garde / Post Bop [1962]

Hyper accessible hyper odd also. The choral stuff works and doesnt. Feels very OTT and overdone, the drumming and the flourishes. Unique so far as my jazz discovery has gone. [3.5]
22The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy
Hypocrisy Is the Greatest Luxury

30th March 2025

Political/Conscious Hip Hop / West Coast / Industrial [1992]

Its peaks are immaculate but GOD does it drag. [3.5] jammed while cleaning my car cause drifter told me to (listen, not clean)
23FKA Twigs
LP1

30th March 2025

Art Pop / Alt R&B [2014]

Wanted to jam her latest but this seemed like a better place to start. Highlights again v high; alot of fluff though. Also during car clean. [3.5]
24Gidge
New Light

Ambient House [2020]

Best fucking bliss out brother [4].
25Seidensticker

26Robert Fripp
At the End of Time

1st April 2025

Ambient [2007]

Everything I enjoyed about 13 but better. Recorded in churches? [4]
27Love Lost But Not Forgotten
Upon the Right, I Saw a New Misery

1st April 2025

Screamo / Metalcore [2002]

That boi he screm version 2895. [4]
28Shikari
Robot Wars

2nd April 2025

Emoviolence / Metalcore [2000]

That boi he screm version 2896. [3.5]
29Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467

2nd April 2025

Classical [1785]

C sucks. Vanilla, well-presented, pristine. I really enjoyed these compositions just something about it feels very formal rigid ick. [3.5] maybe that's why i didnt care that much for GREAT either
30Doss
Doss

4th April 2025

Dream Trance / Ibiza Trance [2014]

Johnny's 5 consideration list prompting me to check a few things i otherwise wouldnt have. this is nice. [4]
31John Coltrane
Live At Birdland

4th April 2025

Post-Bop /Modal [1963]

Rejammed Vanguard and LOVE. Also checked this and what a THUMP. Drumsdrumsdrumsdrums!!!!! [4] growing into all time fave artists everything he did was just the sauce
32Stereolab
Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements

5th April 2025

Noise Pop / Kraut / Space / Post / etc [1993]

Also stolen from Johnny. This is very good this. Strung out blissed up left for dead breathe life into me. [4]
33Love Lost But Not Forgotten
Love Lost but Not Forgotten

5th April 2025

Screamo / Metalcore [2000]

That boi he screm version 2897. [3] kinda underwhelms compared to their next one, though the drumming is popcorn delish
34Skrillex
F*ck U Skrillex You Think Ur Andy Warhol…

7th April 2025

Brostep [2025]

Incredibly fun first listen, but second jam revealed the lack of staying power and the degree of jank. [3]
35Acid Bath
When the Kite String Pops

8th April 2025

Sludge Metal [1994]

Loooove all the undefined undertones of grunge, death metal and various styles of chugga. Only one listen deep but so much character sloshes off the surface. Soup. [4+] second listen I await you gladly
36Merzbow
Merzbeat

9th April 2025

Power Noise [2002]

so dumb but so good. properly accessible for noise, got a great hefty groove to it. [4] overrating for cute art
37Merzbow
Frog

10th April 2025

Noise [2001]

A very angry frog [3]

10outof10 for meme points (this does in fact mimic the rage of many small green bois) but I got bored
38Merzbow
Pulse Demon

10th April 2025

Harsh Noise [1996]

We’ve done merzigital it’s now merzalogue the big fuzz the classic the one I (like everyone) tried when dipping toes into noise thought was shit and left behind. Such a good slab though. Really do fuck with the bassy notes throughout this. [4]
39Merzbow
Flare Gun

10th April 2025

Harsh Noise [1994]

Part 3 is hype. Has less of the dirty bass 38 wins with but alot of its own goofy characters the screms the waaah waaah waaah. Definitely has the occasional nod to stoner doomy metallic things like if you put Dopethrone in a trash compactor [3.5] gotta jam the original though the rerelease ain’t saucing it for me
40Merzbow
Hybrid Noisebloom

14th April 2025

Harsh Noise [1997]

Well dip me in tinsel and call me Terrance if these aren’t all starting to bleed into one. Creamy top notes of skreeeeeeeeeee on this chapter lots of highs to balance out the lows. Less oppressive as a result which is a plus and a minus. Pulse Demon still takes biscuit for fave 1990s Merz so far. Lovely psychedelic fumes on Noisebloom though which is going to prompt a rejam. [3.5] maybe higher if the shrooms kick in
41Merzbow
Minazo Vol. 1

14th April 2025

Noise [2006]

PrObably mid tier Merz but the story behind it and glorious heft of a boi on the cover earn it quite a lot of unexpected warmth and idk man feels sad [3.5]
42Merzbow
Noisembryo

15th April 2025

Harsh Noise [1994]

Last merz for a lil while I think but a good’un to walk into the sunset with. Proper heft and aggression. Meat and gristle. Fuzz for lunch. [3.5]
43Melvins
Bullhead

19th April 2025

Sludge [1991]

After a week and a bit of noise this is luscious. Melodic with the slowness and the magical drumming. Gristle without the meanness. [4] more to come
44Frog
GROG

19th April 2025

Indie / Alt Country / Slacker Rock [2023]

Jammed for no reason other than artist name album name and vibe points oozing from that ms paint album art. Characterful like a place you’ve been or person you’ve met, at least at the bar or something, like a snapshot. [4]
45Melvins
Lysol

20th April 2025

Sludge / Drone Metal [1992]

Used to hate this album quelle fucking surprise then that the rejam is a lot more favourable now I’m familiar with Earth, Boris and the like. First two tracks are the knees of bees. Rest I’m less immediately tickled by. [3.5]

Update (21.04.25): Actually fuck this is huge [4] but ugh the covers [3.5]
46Susumu Yokota
Grinning Cat

22nd April 2025

Ambient / Downtempo [2001]

Has an opulent, addictive, off kilter, side ways head tilted aloof and squinting faintly vibe. Some of the vox samples rub me the wrong way, but the jazz and classic nods do great things. [3.5]
47DJ Koze
Amygdala

23rd April 2025

Deep House [2013]

The sauce is calling. It says hi.

Cosy like a blanket made out of floating things. Trippy in a non-disorienting way, in a warm way. Just grab the beat and move along. [4]
48Melvins
A Senile Animal

24th April 2025

Sludge Metal [2006]

Filthy fun. Stupid dumb pig faced fire. Goes. [4]
49Melvins
Hostile Ambient Takeover

25th April 2025

Sludge Metal [2002]

Laid the groundwork for 48, it seems. When it hits it hits my goodness there’s a hardcore aggression here that I love. Lots of jank that disrupts flow but mostly excellent. [3.5]
50Boris
Pink

26th April 2025

Noise Rock / Stoner Metal [2005]

Have heard before but never rated. Frantic flailing characterful pink smear that I wish was slightly heavier? Idk I always miss Orange (Heavy Rocks) when I hear this blow the bloody doors off. The subtler moments, and noise rock tones, are a treat though. [3.5] likely [4] with time
51Boris
Amplifier Worship

28th April 2025

Drone / Sludge Metal [1998]

Fave Boris? Certainly the most braindead heavy full fat no art school bollocks with a deceptive zen trance drone thing. Praise be the techno frog. [4.5]
52Masakatsu Takagi
Marginalia VII

30th April 2025

Field Recordings / Neo-Classical [2025]

I love takagi but this sucker punched me in ways I never expected. See rev for more but for improvised daily diary pieces these are immaculate, amazingly structured, super duper flow, loads of heart and joy in the spontaneity of the duck quacks and birb chirps. [4.5] had on repeat non stop for days now
53Masakatsu Takagi
Marginalia VI

At some point in week 1 of May 2025

Field Recordings / Neo-Classical [2024]

Also gonna our May here cause fuck it can’t be arsed to find the new list button. Jammed most of these in car in Scotland roadtrip. This probably my least fave of the series, jammed first, leans into ambient in a way that makes me lathargic. Grown up in the wrong way. [3.5] probably lower but Takagi is the guy
54Masakatsu Takagi
Marginalia V

At some point in week 1 of May 2025

Field Recordings / Neo-Classical [2023]

Back to heaven. There’s so much music here id really remember this one but I remember it feeling almost as special as VII the flower petals the grass sway the keep calm and carry on son. [4]
55Masakatsu Takagi
Marginalia IV

At some point in week 1 of May 2025

Field Recordings / Neo-Classical [2021]

Don’t remember. Between VI and V. [3.5]
56Masakatsu Takagi
Marginalia III

At some point in week 2 of May 2025

Field Recordings / Neo-Classical [2021]

Listening to right now (13.05.25) feels like a good’un will report back [tbc].

Update (14.05.25): So fucking good god DAYMN. [4] probably [4.5] with time so many cool melodies improvs with bugs and birds and everything

Update (15.05.25): fuck you take my money literally my favourite artist discovery of the last 2, maybe 3 years
57Masakatsu Takagi
Marginalia II

At some point in week 1 of May 2025

Field Recordings / Neo-Classical [2019]

Has some dud tracks and pacing problems but I’m getting picky at this point because I have (a) over indulged on half a decades worth of music and (b) Takagi sets such a high standard for himself. V impressionist droney elements that VII builds on. [3.5]
58Masakatsu Takagi
Marginalia

At some point in week 1 of May 2025

Field Recordings / Neo-Classical [2018]

The most jarringly different and the original! Nature notices go bye bye, Takagi singing more of a feature (love!!!) closer to the sound of the records he is known more for. Back to basics and nice because of it. [4]
59Four Tet
New Energy

At some point in week 1 of May 2025

Microhouse / Ambient House [2017]

The part of my brain that wants to be objective and smart says I should mark this down. The part of my brain that likes ice cream wants ice cream. [4] it’s four tet im a sucker its lovely
60Four Tet
Parallel

At some point in week 1 of May 2025

Microhouse / Ambient [2020]

The part of my brain that wants to be objective and smart says that this is pretty good. The part of my brain that likes ice cream is underfed. [3.5]
61PUP
Who Will Look After the Dogs?

At some point in week 1 of May 2025

Pop Punk [2025]

I’m disappointed in this in the way people seemed to be disappointed with their last one which I wasn’t disappointed with. PUP always grow though so well we’ll see. [3]
62Djrum
Mountains

12th May 2025

Future Garage / Dub Techno [2011]

I actually remember when I heard this!!! Gearing up for their new one. This is nice. I was tired af when I heard it. I have no thoughts 3.5 fodder [3.5]
63Billy Woods
GOLLIWOG

17th May 2025

Abstract / Horrorcore [2025]

Finally back to regular scheduled (non Takagi) programming with the guy the dude the fella fave modern fringe-ish rap music person with an album with layers upon layers. A few months and I’ll have unpacked a sufficient amount for a firm view for now this is fantastic gritty beats blood and sinew pop etc. [4]
64Djrum
Under Tangled Silence

18th May 2025

IDM [2025]

Loooooveee the classic tones here, the way you can feel a heart being a pulse pulsing beneath the wires. [4] overdue a electronic binge probably
65Car Seat Headrest
The Scholars

20th May 2025

Indie Rock [2025]

Will plays the classics without learning the chords? An ode (I sense) to various rock classics there’s Springsteen in here there’s Bowie there’s Floyd there’s Beach Boys it’s all mixed up shook up splurged back out. It’s ambitious. Most songs feel like interludes or introductions. The songcraft is loose and non committal give me a fucking movement WILLIAM. Feels like how someone would write an album who had never heard an album before, but read about them in books. Which is fucking weird given his excellent and lengthy discog. Meanders v pleasantly. [3]
66The Callous Daoboys
I Don't Want to See You in Heaven

??? May 2025

Dao / Boy [2025]

One of my most hyped albums of the year and I mean it’s alright like you’re never gonna recapture the lightning in that bottle and celibate theologian has a special place in my heart and musical history, getting me back into discovering music along with chat pile.

Has a lot more post hard core / scene vibes to it (attack attack was the first that came to mind) which I don’t mind, but it feels easier to pencil in, pigeon hole, note down the references and follow those strings rather than it smacking of its own unique thing. First spin only in fairness. [3.5]
67Pig Destroyer
Book Burner

June-ish 2025

Pv / grindcore [2012]

We dumping days as idfk when I heard these.

Finally finishing this discog, mostly. Proper slammer. Not picking up a defining trait from this, which means it lacks a clear character, which means several days down the line I don’t remember much about it. Gonna revisit [3.5].
68Chepang
Jhyappa

June-ish 2025

Grindcore [2025]

After the hulking boi that was their last one this was too short and too sweet. [3] though I mean bout nout wrong with what you do get
69Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
Carpe Diem, Moonman

June-ish 2025

Psych Rock [2025]

They’re back baby and it isn’t shit baby whoooooo. Thumps for the perfect amount of time, does some hazy shit and then fucks off. [4] dig
70Causa Sui
In Flux

June-ish 2025

Psych Rock / Jam Rock [2025]

Fine. [3.5] probs overrates this but it was blouses blissed and smoke man it’s all good
71Stereolab
Instant Holograms On Metal Film

June-ish 2025

Neo Psych / Various Pop Things [2025]

I’m not that long or that into Stereolab to justify getting that excited over a return that I wasn’t aware was coming but I enjoyed this and continue to pillage their discog at leisure. [3.5]
72Bolt Thrower
Realm of Chaos

June-ish 2025

Death Metal [1989]

On the important death metal bands that I still hadn’t jammed list for too long. It was good! Some doom tones. Good enough that I’ll check their later discog stuff. [3.5] not as filthy as I’d like, has a thrashy twang? I guess still the 80s innit.
73Sleep Token
Even in Arcadia

June-ish 2025

Pop [2025]

Honestly went in expecting it to be as earache inducing as their last, but this was fine. Amazing prod and good hooks. Not going to jam again in a hurry, but I’m not aghast with disgust. [3]
74Clutch
Blast Tyrant

June-ish 2025

Stoner/Hard/Blues Rock [2004]

High energy big fun jam times dump a truck and fuck a duck I enjoyed this. Didn’t realise how much of their sound King Gizzard owed to this band. [4]
75Melvins
Houdini

June-ish 2025

Sludge / Stoner [1993]

Slowly building a decent case for the best band of all time. Or at least an unexpected love of mine. Oscillating between a [4] with Honey Bucket what a riff and [3.5] jank. [3.5]
76Melvins
The Maggot

8th June 2025

Sludge / Stoner / Doom [1999]

Back on top of dates as this was today and I know when today was.

Better. Thicker. The weird cuts between the track parts on the streaming site I’m using sucks but the songs and the progressions do not. [4]
77Crowbar
Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form

8th June 2025

Sludge [2001]

8th June 2025

Stoner/Doom/Heavy Psych [1997]

Jammed years ago and hated it because it wasn’t Dopethrone. Now I have better headphones as this do be thicc like whipped cream and dying aka it’s awesome: [4]
80Cathedral
The Carnival Bizarre

June 2025

Stoner/Doom [1995]

Was going to do Forest or Mirror but the rym write ups for this suggested it would be thiccer and more my speed and quelle surprise I am lost in the sauce hip hip hooray! Sabbath worship but in a good way. Songwriting that slips down buttery like. Dumb theatrics are enamouring. [4]
81Electric Wizard
Let Us Prey

June 2025

Stoner/Doom [2002]

Fuck it discogs must be run. Super duper creepy jeepers scooby and the gang vibes with some anger filth and fuck to it still. Hard (impossible) to follow up Dopethrone satisfyingly but tickles all the right pickles. [3.5]
82Electric Wizard
We Live

June 2025

Stoner/Doom [2004]

Feels more well thought out, planned, conceived, orchestrated, grown up, etc.

A touch thoughtful for me. Give me some hurtling riffs. Think it’ll be a longer stayer though as Saturn’s Children do be epic. [3.5]
