Yes, we're doing it again folks!
1Sufjan Stevens
Illinois

This is now my third time doing this album challenge. Here are the rules:

One submission per person, first come first serve. I will listen to the first thirty records recommended, one per day every day throughout the month of April. If you have previously played and recommended me either your favorite album of all time or your second favorite album, please rec your third favorite album of all time. Anyone is welcome to join in the fun and make a suggestion. Please check my ratings or view my prior two lists before making a suggestion just so we get some fresh music to check. Any repeats or previously heard albums will be prompted with a request to make a new submission.
2King Crimson
In the Court of the Crimson King

Once I have listened to the recommended album, I will give it a score and a short write up to reflect on my experience with the album. Please be kind to each other in the comments, this is all for fun and for sharing a passion for music together. Please no joke suggestions, I actually want to enjoy these albums. Fire away boys!

With this first recommendation, I found myself with an album I've been meaning to listen to for years and I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed. Truth be told, this sort of technical/dissonant death metal doesn't always hit for me but this record is just too good to ignore. The riffs are fucking crazy, the BASS RIFFS are insane, there's enough going on with the songwriting and experimentation to really keep my attention 100% of the time despite the hour runtime. Great record, great start to the month of April.

I have a feeling with additional listens that my score would go up for this record but having only a chance to listen through twice, I admit that I had mixed feelings at first. My main qualm was the vocals but as I continued listening, I grew to appreciate the words more than the delivery of those words. Then after a bit, I grew to appreciate the versatility of the vocalist’s almost spiritual-chant style which was consistently complimented by pitched group choir vocals. This record is super well designed and executed, the storytelling is singular, the instrumentation is meaningful and creative. This is my first full experience with this band, and I am impressed. I will absolutely continue listening to this and their other projects as well.

I was not expecting a singular 11-minute song when I accepted this request but after listening through a handful of times, I understand how the potency and thrill of this track can mean so much and justify the insane positive reaction I’ve witnessed when looking up the lore of this project. Lyrically powerful, sonically versatile; the multi-phased nature of this track works as a great binder for the story. It’s impressive that in its short runtime, this track is able to navigate various sonic terrains very fluidly and link them all together in a way that feels gratifying. I find it difficult to rate this like an album but as a song, this thing goes; the end is pretty horrifying but if I’m to accept the premise of the track, the story itself needs to come to horrifying end so sonically it does what it needs to do.

First off, I really enjoyed this. I don't often sit down and listen to this style of hard bop jazz and I am fool for it. There's so much papable energy, the drumming is hypnotic, the horns are blaring and so in your face with their melodies. It's a great project and having not heard previously of Art Blakey should be enough to have me shot because this dude can drum. Great recommendation, need to hear more of this.

I enjoyed this quite a bit; sweeping passages of prog rock with post-rock undertones, clean transitions between sections and passages, love the tone of the guitars and bass throughout this album. I have heard Effloresce previously and I think I enjoyed that one a bit more but this was still a very good experience albeit a bit bloated in its runtime. Some of the songs tend to drag on a bit too long unnecessarily but "An Old Friend of The Christy's" which crosses ten minutes is an absolute tune. Great stuff!

Rec'd by ArsMoriendi

I'm actually kind of shocked that this record clicked with me as much as it did because this style of rock just doesn't always do it for me. The culmination of the odd vocals and phrasings with the high energy riffs and passages and experimental undertones really tickled by interest and I ended up listening to this more than any of the albums so far. Love the in-and-out nature, never overstays its welcome but always utilizes it's time very well.

Rec'd by Futures

I really tried with this. It's not really my cup of tea generally, the midwest emo stuff, but I did vibe with some of the slower tracks that were a bit more vibey. The more energetic tracks with chaotic guitars and the whinier vocals tended to turn me off a bit despite me respecting the technicality and precision of the instrumentation. I didn't hate this by any means but I don't feel like it's something that I would return to.

Rec'd by DarkSideOfLucca

I enjoy some hevydevy from time to time, I won't go out on a limb and say that I'm a massive fan but I appreciate the music that I've heard from his projects. This record is great, it's layered, it's bombastic, it's epic sounding, it features so many different styles and sounds that it's actually a bit overwhelming at times coupled with a fairly excessive runtime. I think "Regulator" is the highlight for me, that opening riff section is absolutely bonkers.

April 9th

Rec'd by StormChaser

My only other experience with John's solo work is the other album that was recommended to me by him in a previous one of these lists. I did prefer this record overall; the guitar heavy tracks are the ones that generally stood out to me and provided the most replayability. I do think the final three tracks are a bit a letdown, some of the vocal choices and production choices are jarring to me. But the front half is extremely loaded with great tracks and great performances so I can't be too mad.

Rec'd by JohnnyoftheWell

Love this! I've listened to one other album from Shiina and I adored it. This is definitely more J-rock based with noisier elements but it all feels very cohesive, very natural. Shiina has such a charismatic and versatile voice that she's able to really hold her ground for those noisier rock sections and then pull back gracefully for the jazzier, poppier sections as well. I think the versatility and brightness of the record is what really draws me to it and I can totally see myself really holding this album in high esteem after repeated listening.

April 11th

Rec'd by brickhed

An impressive display of technical skill on their respective instruments; as an album of songs, it feels more like just listening to a bunch of guys during a jam session which is not a bad thing. I think the initial shock of the skill wore off when the songs didn't really elaborate on the skills and just felt like wankery for half an hour. Again, it's very cool, very impressive, just not something that I would return to much.

Man, what a sick record! I have listened to this band's most recent album as well as a handful of songs from their discography but to sit down and experience this record in particular really solidified my respect for their craft. Dude's vocals are just insane, going from demonic lows to these absolute banshee squeals, it's just insanely impressive. I feel like the songs were all so different and constantly shifting and building as well so it's just always interesting and appealing.

This was a big one, definitely a lot ot chew on here but absolute worth every second. What a sonic experience, so complex with its layering of sounds and oddities; very dense, very nuanced at times, so many highlight-worthy passages and moments. It all comes together so beautifully, flows like a river and somehow at an hour and twenty minutes, it just sort of breezes by without feeling that long. Wonderful recommendation, absolutely worth the time if you have not previously listened to this and enjoy ambient dub type stuff.

Welcome to the 5 club little buddy! Record is immaculate, gorgeous front to back, everything comes together beautifully and with so much respect. I got chills multiple times during each of my listening sessions to this record; it feels as if you're floating on a cloud and sometimes, that cloud is just fucking epic. I genuinely am unsure how to talk about this record because I've listened to it 3 times and I just want to hear it more so I can really dig into the details. I might end up writing a full retrospective review on it at some point because I want to talk about it in detail. Thanks very much for this submission, I have a feeling it's going to be hard to beat.

Rec'd by Rowhaus

Fantastic hip hop record; love the inclusion of some funk elements and even some psych and rock stuff from time to time. All the features are excellent, it's sonically very rich and potent with enough diversity to real keep your attention and that 34 minute runtime is just a breeze. Really enjoyed this, never heard of this artist prior so this was an excellent introduction to their artistry.

April 16th

Rec'd by jrlikestodance

I certainly can't say that Ween aren't a creative bunch because going from a solid art rock tune to a sea shanty took a couple listens to wrap my head around. I believe I'll need to spend a bit more time with this record to really grasp all the details, but I did enjoy this, not as much as Quebec, but it's still a very admirable and interesting record. I did also want to point at the production value of this record which is excellent, like insanely crisp, insanely clear and very easy on the ears.

April 17th

Rec'd by Thibs

Yes! This was excellent, reminds me a bit of early Opeth but they definitely have their own distinct take on the proggy death metal stuff. Great riffs, production is super clean as well for an underground band, the songwriting feels rather mature and well-crafted for the most part. There's maybe a couple tracks I'm not as fawned of but overall, this was a great experience. I'll have to give some of their other records a spin at some point as well.

April 18th

Rec'd by Hawks

This sort of raw black metal is truly not my thing, so I don't want to spend the entirety of this short review bashing on all the things that I don't enjoy about this. However, my issue is that I also don't really have anything overtly positive to say about it because everything from the production to the performances to the songwriting really doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. My apologies, I always want to enjoy these recommended records, but this was just a very difficult listen for me.

April 19th

Rec'd by MTObsidian

While maybe not quite as good as the other green circle album covered album, this record still slaps. I love the bass and guitar tones on these songs, so very rich and dense. I love the flow from track to track, I love how the songs develop and build and soften, it's just solid songwriting that I can really appreciate. I feel like vocals would have ruined the simplicity and uncomplicated nature of these songs, it's very vibey and I enjoyed my time with it.

April 20th

Rec'd by Drifter

While maybe not as good as A Walk Among the Rooftops or Hats, it's still an extremely great record with tons of memorable tunes and passages. I think the main aspect that draws me into their music is how sonically deep and powerful the production and mix are; each track really pulls you into its sonic world and it's very pleasant. I also found the vocal performances to be particularly cathartic and memorable especially on Sentimental Man and Love Came Down. Overall great record, love this band, hadn't previously heard this record but now I have to finish up their discography.

I now bring you one of my most unpopular opinions, I don't really care for slowcore. Not that this record is purely that; it very much offers hints of ambient and dream pop, even some slacker rock type stuff but the more lo-fi production style is where I kind of grow a bit weary while listening. While my review thus far doesn't seem very positive, I want to be clear that I did enjoy this, while it certainly isn't my favorite, it's pleasant while it's on. I'll have to give it a couple more spins but I'm feeling like this style of music has a ceiling for me and they're pretty close to maxing it out.

Update: Listened to this once again this morning and I'm starting to understand the appeal.

Rec'd by SomeCallMeTim

Holy hell, what a fantastic record! The aggression, the riffs, the angst; it feels like so many bands have been trying to replicate this sound and yet no one has done it quite as well. I love how groovy things feel at times as well with the simple drum patterns. As someone who has listened to a lot of modern metalcore and has grown extremely jaded towards the genre as of late, hearing something like this which feels like an essential piece to the beginnings of the genre, it just brings me a lot of joy. Will definitely be checking more of this band in the near future!

I'll probably need a bit more time with this one before settling on an actual score. I had only previously heard Pink Flag by them and truth be told, I wasn't a big fan. This however explores much more artsy punk stuff with odd psych sections and all sorts of interesting ideas. Sonically, it is a bit thin but the songwriting sort of speaks for itself with much of this being extremely compelling. A Touching Display is insanely haunting and the song that really hit me the most when listening through this the couple times I did. Great album, need more time with it.

Gosh, I didn't realize we had reached peak music in 2015. I mean, this is sometimes unironically really good. Some of the beats, some of the little synth melodies, it kind of slaps. I really found a good chunk of these funny and enjoyable; just felt easy to vibe to once I accepted what this record was. Overall, a nice break in the middle of all these ultra-serious records.

Every record I've heard from this group I've enjoyed thoroughly and have multiple songs added to various playlists. This record might just be my favorite from them that I've heard so far; the explosive post rock moments feel extra powerful, extra important within the context of these songs. I love the lengthier compositions, I love the sonic quality of these tunes and I love that everything is well-balanced. I think there's maybe a track or two that I'm not as in love with but overall, I enjoyed this and I plan on listening to more and more of this band moving forward.

Rec'd by RadioSuicide

Probably not going to be one of my more popular opinions but I didn't jive with this much. Outside of maybe a few tracks, I felt myself drifting in and out of focus on these songs; all in all it's a style of music that I haven't really enjoyed in the past. I don't believe I've heard any of this band's other albums to date but I will eventually give this and something else from them another shot because it seems like they are fairly well respective and beloved.

April 27th

Rec'd by Icebloom

Generally, this type of lo-fi slowcore isn't really my thing and I felt exactly that after my first listen. I did find a decent amount of enjoyment on repeat listening however, particularly in the longer tracks like "Lazy Eyelids" and "Some Days are Better Than Others." A part of me wishes for a bit more of a rich production style with more depth especially in terms of bass but I've come to accept this for what it is, and I did like it. It's probably not something I would revisit often outside of select songs, but I did like this.

This was quite a listen, can't say I'm very well versed in sound collage type music, but I found this fairly endearing. I think I would need at least a couple more listens to really dig into this record so my score is more representative of an immediate gut reaction. I did really like the flow from track to track, I liked the experimental elements, felt like I was constantly on my toes. Overall, very unique, interesting record, probably not something I would regularly visit but I respect it.

Rec'd by Jurtz

Pretty solid brutal death metal stuff, very stuffy sounding, very energetic and caustic in its sonic space. Obviously, the technicality of the drumming and the guitars is impressive, it's very chaotic and relentless. While this isn't generally my favorite style of heavy music I found a decent amount of enjoyment out of it.

It would make sense that the final album for this month is one of the most challenging yet rewarding records so far. The main highlight for me has got to be the drum production, particularly in the track "Paper Hats" which I had my jaw on the floor for the entire six minute runtime. I'm not a guy that goes out of my way to listen to the most experimental stuff but I found this record to be a great balance between the technicality or experimentation and good songwriting that left me satisfied. I'm curious to listen to their other stuff now as this was quite a wild ride.
