rec me some desolate jams
not genre-specific, I will listen to one per user and blurb away. added some of my favs to kick the list off |
| 1 | | Natural Snow Buildings The Winter Ray
Listened to this one today and man oh man this took me to another place, felt like the drone and field recordings parts of F♯ A♯ ∞ for two and a half hours. Further listens necessary, but I think this is my favorite drone I've heard. |
| 2 | | Paysage d'Hiver Paysage d'Hiver
Another recent dig, has quickly become my favorite bm record (I am a normie). Used to be pretty into blackgaze but have recently been seeing it as more cheesy than epic, but I realized I still love the atmospheric bits and how deeply affecting atmo bm can be. |
| 3 | | Slint Spiderland
easy pick, been one of my fav albums forever |
| 4 | | Unwound Leaves Turn Inside You
another easy pick. super rich sound palette + a wonderful swirling genre melting pot here where everything works so well |
| 5 | | Manic Street Preachers The Holy Bible
easy pick, spun the hell out of this after I downloaded in sophomore year and was very surprised that this really isn't a challenging album at all: this is some very well written guitar rock. The lyrics and the lore attached are insane, and I recently rediscovered and re-5'd after unduly demoting it. |
| 6 | | Billy Woods Aethiopes
second fav hip-hop oat, AsleepInTheBack really had it right when they called this cobwebby: the opening track is a masterclass in the art form of unease. I love how unaffected Mr. Woods is, just his jaded, half-shouted flow, tossing together a perfect word salad to get his point across, giving us harrowing flash-frames and spinning his web to connect them. |
| 7 | | Duster Contemporary Movement
This is quite doomeresque: Stratosphere is space-age analog equipment, grassy hills, and twinkling stars, this is and asphalt and fatigue and being soaked to the bone. Beautiful guitar, all the chords feel just right, and the tone is the perfect amount of fuzz |
| 8 | | Aldebaran Dwellers In Twilight
rec'd by Hawks: some great sludge/doom/drone, opening track was my favorite. The riffs were meaty and the tone was beautiful (as expected) but there was nothing that struck me as genius. The raspier vox made my skin crawl, the yelled ones had less of an effect. Overall, gud 3.2 |
| 9 | | Wovenhand Blush Music
rec'd by Butkuiss: this one was odd. I've never really heard anything like this (wtf is gothic country). My Russia had an odd little grinding noise in the middle that tied everything together, and the more drone-leaning tracks were all pleasant. The way the tracklist was arranged seemed pretty suboptimal, even though the actual songs were good. Final verdict is low desire to relisten, but glad I did 3.4 |
| 10 | | diSEMBOWELMENT Transcendence into the Peripheral
rec'd by NexCeleris: never listened to any death doom so was interested to step foot into the genre. First few tracks felt like they were just throwing things that define extreme metal into a pot and playing it, felt kinda sloppy. However, the dark ambient bits were very good, and track four was transcendent, reminded me of Kick the Tragedy off of Delaware (and they would both be better w/o the vox). The back half started to come together for me, and rather than feel shoddily constructed, the doom bits started complementing the death bits very well. I listened twice, and both times the first half felt shaky, but the back half is great 3.8 |
| 11 | | The For Carnation The For Carnation
rec'd by JohnnyoftheWell: went into this with high hopes cuz solo project of mr. slint, and honestly was kinda disappointed. It has this wonderful jazzy slink that makes me feel like I should be lurking corners and smoking a cigar, but it throws in these weird electronic elements at times that do not mesh well at all. big potential, snoother as standout, but kinda felt like the ball was dropped 3.0 |
| 12 | | Andy Guthrie Blemished

| 13 | | Trist (GER) Willenskraft

Jesus Came Driving Along---rec'd by Chippe |
| 17 | | Paradise Lost Gothic
rec'd by JDubb |
| 18 | | Kolya Kolya
rec'd by Drifter: very solid emo, opening track was scrumptious. I feel like I should jam some La Dispute considering how often this gets compared to them. Guitar work was nice and spindly and angular and I liked 3.7 |
