I'd limit myself to just buying from local record stores to spend less money but my flyover town doesn't have one that's worth a damn. :( Closest one worth checking out is like a 2 hour drive. |

02.24.25 | I bought tons of records on Amazon a couple of years back, especially since getting stuff from Bandcamp to Mexico is pretty much impossible without paying a ton of money. Fortunately, there are like 5 new record stores in my city and they all do excellent work curating their stock. |

that price tag though |
Jash
02.26.25 | I mean when I upgraded to a $300 cartridge I wanted to get something that would lengthen its life, and just give my better sound quality going forward. If you invest that much on records, then why would you not invest that much on quality components, and cleaning components to make them sound great and keep your setup in great condition? |
DominionMM1
02.26.25 | i use the LAST stylus cleaner and it’s worked fine for me |
Jash
02.26.25 | I love the hands free cleaning of something so delicate, and also the force tracking feature is awesome to make sure your rig is also calibrated, and I’ve used it to help a bunch of friends get their tables dialled in as well. Also I’m not about to do the math, but I assume the very small amounts of distilled water I’m going to use in the machine to clean compared to the price of the cleaner purchases in the long run will be well worth it |
Uzumaki

Not sure what you mean by this comment, my current catalogue is 450 deep now so I think I’ve started, and I was referring to a stylus cleaning in the previous posts, I also have a solution/wet/dry brush cleaner that I use on my records.
I agree though, the cleaning ritual is soothing and I love it |

02.26.25 | Vinyl is a unique medium for me. I mostly purchase specific genres such as indie, jazz, classic rock, etc. I don’t buy too much in the way of low-end reliant stuff like metal unless it’s an all time favorite album of mine. I love to purchase classics |

@MTO - Collecting literally led to me updating my living room and dedicating a wall to vinyl lol. IDK if a designer would say it's great or anything but I spent a decent amount of time and effort planning how I'd store them, modding the shelves so that they sit nicely and gon't get pushed too far back (you know the struggle) and also a wall shelving solution for displaying a few as well. I'm happy with how it turned out, and already have different ideas for how I'd do it over lol. |
MTObsidian
03.13.25 | That sounds awesome, my man! I'd like to add some wall display mounts but it would replace some great artwork that my spouse put up that looks really nice in the room. She found this great midcentury modern cabinet at a thrift store that contains everything nicely, so I have a more minimalist approach going on with the turntable on top and all the discs inside. My speaker setup is an old Bose system meant for a computer so the speakers are small but powerful and fit the vibe. I recently added a small easel as a sort of "Now Playing" display and it really ties everything together.
Never thought I'd care about interior decorating but a vinyl hobby pushes a man to strange extremes haha |
0GuyMan0
03.13.25 | I'm literally using my Klipsch receiver and surround sound setup from 2009, so I feel that lol. Ironically the worst part of my setup is the record player itself, feels kinda funny putting a $100+ record on a record player that isn't worth much more but I didn't want to splurge on a nice one until I wrapped my head around this whole thing. |

0GuyMan0
03.19.25 | No shit. In 2009 I bought first pressings of Queensryche's classic era (EP -> Promised Land) for $7 each at a shop that had truly absurd stuff looking back. It's just a different game now. Retro video game hunting was the same way, could get so much for so cheap fifteen years ago. |

03.25.25 | Can't stop won't stop. Several more on pre-order oh boy.
Cradle of Filth - The Screaming of the valkyries

03.25.25 | That BTBAM album is one of my favorites. I have been meaning to get that one on vinyl but keep forgetting lol.
I'm eyeing "Innate Passage" by Elder right now as my next grab. I've noticed that I keep coming back to that album a lot and really enjoy it, so it might be a good choice for a vinyl copy. It kinda has that vinyl-feel, too, if you get what I mean there: something about the music and the way it's mixed makes me think it would be excellent on a turntable. |
Uzumaki
03.26.25 | I just got an email this morning informing me my copy of the deluxe edition of Ariana Grande’s latest album just shipped and is on its way. |

03.26.25 | Agreed, it's a great part of their repertoire. That climax towards the end of Fossil Genera gets me pumped every time lol. I cycle through most of their stuff pretty regularly, though there are some that I really don't bother with (s/t, Automata I/II).

Faraudo - good finds!
Zac - nice work on almost completing the Dillinger discography. I'm in the same boat with Baroness but I don't think I'll ever find/get First or Second on vinyl. Those EPs don't capture me as much as their later work does.
I'm a hair's breadth away from getting that damn Elder record but I feel like I can't spend more money on vinyls right now |

MTObsidian
04.16.25 | Right! That's the game we play with new vinyls now days, eh? Either buy it now when you like it or buy it later for much more when you love it lol.
The worst is when you discover an artist and want to get all of their stuff on vinyl, only to find out that they released a trickle of vinyls like 10 years ago and they're all impossible to find now (looking at you, Riverside and Haken...) |

04.16.25 | Yeah being a post metal fan makes for a pretty insufferable experience, as they were essentially metal hipsters and embraced vinyl from the start. So those mid '00s - 2010s can be truly awful to get hold of. So glad I was obsessed with and jumped on Rosetta's first three releases because oof. |
MTObsidian
04.17.25 | I got lucky with finding a reasonably priced Isis's "Wavering Radiant" back in the day, but then I paid out the nose for a copy of "In The Absence Of Truth" more recently. I don't think I can fork out the money for rare stuff like that anymore, unless it's something truly special. |
0GuyMan0
04.17.25 | I just saw ITAOT in a shop here for $70. I didn't feel like pulling out discogs to run down which version it was and if it was worth it, but most of their prices seemed high so I erred on the side of caution for once and let it go lol. |

I considered going out the day after to see if the Judas Priest live album was floating around somewhere, but decided against it. I did end up ordering The Eternal Idol online, even knowing I'd probably see it in shops for the next year or two. I see the Tony Martin era albums all over the place now, guessing despite all the years of hoping for presses us Tony fans didn't exactly rush out and gobble them up.
Well. I did, at least lol. I also pre-ordered the Elden Ring collection, which $$$$fuck but I couldn't pass it up. |
0GuyMan0
04.18.25 | @MTO fuck I probably should have just jumped on it. It was white, looks like there's a couple of those but it might have been a decent price. It would have been the most expensive Isis I've picked up, and that didn't sit well with me as likely to be accurate as I miraculously found a copy of oceanic out in the wild once and it was only $50. |
MTObsidian
04.18.25 | @Guy that's totally fair--once you start hitting that $50+ price point, it makes your stomach churn a bit. If it was white though, I think that one's more rare and might have been worth more; mine is just standard black. |
MTObsidian
04.18.25 | Oh, on another note: I finally had time to sit down and spin my copy of Chat Pile's "Cool World" all the way through. Man, that album is spectacular--sounds even better on vinyl. The grittiness of their sound really comes through in a heavy, great way. |

05.02.25 | I've held that one in my hands a couple times and decided against it. Now that the jazz door has been flung open I will basically never enter a record store again without spending money lol. Don't need the anime door open too.
Almost spent $300 on that Metallica - Load collector's thingy, but then I remembered I already have a first press and what purpose would it serve, so I canceled my order.
Had a record show across the river from STL last weekend and almost left without spending, but stopped at the guy right by the door and noticed a copy of Queensryche - The Warning that was still in shrink and had a hype sticker on it, marked as first press. Could hardly believe what I might be holding. Chatted with the guy for a minute about how he got it and he name-dropped DeGarmo and Rockenfield so I decided the $70 was worth it. Nobody else in my life would understand why that thing might be special to me, but for me it's as close as I could ever get to being there in the beginning for my favorite all-time band.
I think my copy of Alive or Just Breathing is being delivered today, finally. So stoked.

Kinda like some people and tattoos: the first ones have all the special meanings and before too long it's like, "Say, it's a Tuesday, I could go for a new one today."
Still gotta update my Discogs, I keep forgetting and also buying more records... |

05.06.25 | Got you guys added to the list - Tim hook it up with the discogs and I'll change the link lol.

Honestly I've always said that, at least with Silver Side Up, they were basically a modern version of Def Leppard in the Hysteria era, which is to say quite good for what it is. I'd probably snag one if I found it on the cheap. Still say "Too Bad" is a ripper.
>zakalwe
Yeah I've gone absolutely berserk with this shit in the last few months. Today I see that Hybrid Theory is on sale for $15 through Amazon and I adore that album but I'm wavering on it. I've slowed up a bit because I want to upgrade my turntable and would rather snag a good one than do it incrementally. Not sure which yet...I know I'd like one that is fully automatic because I have shaky hands and worry so much about gently placing the needle lol, but there aren't many options for that. So was looking at the Fluence RT85 as a possibility. Maybe $500-600 range. If y'all have some rec's I'd appreciate it! |

Haha, i've always been of the belief that most of the time albums sound better on vinyl than anywhere else, plus i've always liked having physical albums anyway regardless, CD or vinyl or cassette or whatever, and to me a good album is a good album no matter what other people think of it. Also I grew up with Nickelback so I have a bit of nostalgia for that album and Dark Horse especially : ) |

Amen to both of those statements right there! Finally figuring these out after spending too long being a snob has made music so much more enjoyable, although my wallet definitely hurts a little more these days lol |

05.09.25 | Death - Symbolic
Finally on my shelf, and that's a completed studio album catalog. Not that it's difficult to find death records lol.
Kinda got me thinking about how many obscure / extreme albums are commonplace to find in vinyl now. Like if you sort by metal on fuckin' amazon you're gonna see the unholy trilogy of darkthrone albums very quickly, which I find hilarious and have to wonder how Fenriz feels about that lol. |

05.10.25 | Aight boys and girls, spent a little too much but fuck it, I’m happy. Honorable mention goes to the copy of Chiodos’ “All’s Well That Ends Well” that I had to leave behind because that would’ve put me above $200, but here we go, and mind, I found all of these in the “used” section - no new vinyl purchases here:
Letlive. - The Blackest Beautiful
Racebannon - First There Was the Emptiness
Since By Man - Pictures From the Hotel Apocalypse
Anna Sage - s/t
TDEP - Miss Machine
Chamber - Cost of Sacrifice
Converge - Axe To Fall
Acursed - Livet är den längsta vägen till helvetet
Rush - Caress of Steel
George Benson - In Flight
George Benson - Livin’ Inside Your Love |

05.14.25 | I have now officially purchased an album with the sole intention of flipping it, which I'd have taken an ethical stand against previously. But I just hate Sleep Token that much that I'd make an exception lol. Realized their fans behave like TSwift and Eilish fans and took a flier on the Glass of Port press Revolver had pre orders for a few months back. It's selling for $300+ so I'm feeling good about it lol. |
MTObsidian
05.14.25 | I mean, I'm a-okay with you swindling some rabid fans if it's Sleep Token lol |

05.19.25 | Managed to snag a copy of Blood Incantation - Starspawn this weekend, stoked on it.
Been slowly working through my collection with the ultrasonic. And I mean SLOWLY. IDK why I had to adopt the most involved process ever for this but it certainly is cleaning them lmao. |

05.28.25 | Y'all got any good jazz recs that don't cost a ton? You know the kind, the ones you'll see for $10 in the jazz section that will never sell lol.
Think I need to make a move on Herbie Hancock soon, I dig a lot of his stuff. |
Josh D.
05.28.25 | Heh, I waited until I could find Herbie's Head Hunters in stores to justify spending the money.
One of my favorite jazz musicians, and his stuff is usually well priced, is Phineas Newborn Jr. The Stan Getz and Raul de Souza albums I have were cheap. Jazz is so broad, it's a good genre to play "if it has a cool cover, snag it" with |

Honestly my ears are so new to it that distinguishing great from good / ok is a laughable concept, so that may be the way to go for a while. |
