The news has been toxic, it seems like every other day another story about trans people's rights being slowly stripped or some other dumb shit like changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America or renaming Greenland to Red-White-and-Blueland.
At this point I'm praying for either Andy Beshear to bring a real blue wave or a meteor to strike us all. |

02.21.25 | I actually don't rightly understand peoples obsession over immigration, it's as if people view them through the lense of being a different species altogether. The processing from both a time, difficulty, and financial perspective to become a US citizen is highly inaccessible and henceforth it becomes really unfair towards people who probably would much rather opt for legal migration. And therein is the term-people. Like, people who love and hate and experience the same spectrum of emotion anyone does. It's kind of gross people just dictate them as intrinsically lesser beings. |

I'd say roughly 1 in 3 of the people that work at the printing press i'm at are, at the least, temp workers, and what happened when management shifted and they had a brief layoff of all their temp workers? They brought them all back cause they fucked staffing at their warehouses and (probably) because we had two different shifts on two presses now receiving underman pay. AFAIK the pay for temp guys here isn't like, super dogshit since while low it's all untaxed but it's still not fantastic. Idk how these guys are supposed societal detriments. |

ColonelWang
02.21.25 | @metalphil There's a decent chance we're too far gone. Whatever door Trump opened, there are some genuinely evil people that snuck in behind him and are becoming an influential force within MAGA.
People who have been raised off of the alt right/CEO king pipeline have gone from their dark internet corners to having their ideas be a few degrees away from real power. They don't care about the Constitution, democracy, or any of that, and I think a lot of discourse now is having a hard time trying to understand that transformation because the belief in our institutions has been this inherit baseline of political action a majority of the time.
They want to emulate South African styles of apartheid states. Their motivator is violence against the groups they hate, plain and simple. My guess is that they'll be what comes after MAGA and will try to transform the right in their image. They're pretty much trying to already. |

02.21.25 | I’m a little more optimistic. I think once the fucker dies there will be a power vacuum, one of his dipshit kids will probably try to head the maga movement, that ladder climbing cunt JD Vance will as well, Elon will absolutely make some moves even tho he’s not native, but the far right will lose their figurehead and I can’t think of any of them who are as charismatic as Trump. Say what you want about the man but he knows how to read a room like nobody’s business and he’s just entertaining. I can see why he appeals to the lowest common denominator even when it’s directly against their best interest.
I think when he dies nobody will be able to replace him, and I fucking pray that the democrats grow some brains and balls and run a fucking populist in 2028 instead of CONTINUING TO PANDER PEOPLE THAT WILL NEVER VOTE FOR THEM.
like for fucks sake, yes, I’m a socialist, but I will settle for free healthcare and just letting everyone have a dignified existence.

02.21.25 | "if the us is not careful, they are going to go the direction of russia under putin"
The seeds are being sown it seems. Trump's stance on the war / getting into bed with Putin etc. The U.S. have their own oligarch. Yes he is 'just' the figurehead but Trump and his inner circle are working towards something quite frightening.
When I compared the two's ideals before all this happened it raised an eyebrow with the wife, she (fairly) thought his power was somewhat nullified by the committee approach to government and 'democracy' etc. but the balance appears to be shifting alarmingly in a similar direction.
How did Trump's support of Russia over Ukraine go down in the U.S? You would have thought sympathising with a warmonger and historical 'enemy' of the west would have caused widespread anger and fear. I hope the answer is contrary to, or at least a little more nuanced than 'they successfully shifted blame onto immigrants instead / the average citizen doesn't see Russia as a problem anymore'
P.S. As a Brit I disappear more and more each day for Brexit. Europe were our true political allies, not this fucked up version of the U.S. Hindsight aside it was obvious then, even if this timeline is worse than I could have ever imagined. |

Aside from our veterans, we as a nation have no clue what its like to live through a war. I feel like thats why push back isn't happening now, and I'm worried that if we do get to that point it'll be too late. Why the fuck is our stance as a country 'Ukraine shouldn't have fucked with Russia'??? Why are we letting ELON MUSK gut genuinely important pieces of government, claiming it's to 'reduce government waste' when all the shit he's cut out is hardly a drop in the bucket?? Why are we letting people (Musk, Bannon) pull off NAZI SALUTES (don't pull that 'democrats do it too' shit, theres a difference between a screenshot and a full blown video of a salute) and thinking its FUNNY and EDGY??

At this point, idk. There are some candidates that seem genuine, but that just might be ideological bias coming thru in me. I liked what I saw from Claudia De la Cruz and Karina Garcia, but the Green Party definitely has been giving me that vibe pretty much my entire adult life. I’m pretty sure Jill Stein has been their candidate since 2016 at least and I feel like I never see or hear from her unless there’s an election happening. |
Wildcardbitchesss
02.22.25 | “What I don't get is why people don't just vote something other than Republic or Democrat? It's possible right?”
I’ll put it like a dumb guy because all other three of your answers are more knowledgeable on it than me.
Yes it’s possible. But it won’t happen because most people don’t even know who they are. They don’t run ads, they don’t have the money to properly campaign. Politicians, especially those running for president, are treated like celebrities here (idk how it is for most of the rest of the world, am dumb American), and those third party candidates just, well, aren’t. Their views are too radical so they’re purposefully suppressed by the media, even tho the Green Party just seems like what a ton of European countries have already had for years.
Both of our parties are right wing, one only seems progressive because they pretend to care about social causes but economically, I don’t see a huge difference between aside from Trump. He’s just doing some insane shit. |

02.22.25 | Your first mistake is trying to reason with someone with Lynyrd Skynyrd 5s. |
suppatime
02.22.25 | I will agree that modern third parties are useless to a degree, but to say that third parties are not viable in this country is just wrong in my opinion. Ross Perot got almost 20% of the popular vote in the 90s, Teddy Roosevelt got 27% when he ran for a third term as a third party in the early 1900s, and the Dems endorsed a third party and didn't run their own candidate in the 1872 election. In addition, we've had plenty of party shifts and new versions of the two parties created throughout our history.
So, third parties are viable and can make a difference when well-run but therein lies the rub. Modern third parties (and both major parties to be honest) have nominated shit candidates for years and are not well-run. Third parties especially need a charismatic leader, and they tend to run the most milquetoast, lame people around. Then, as others have said, it's fear of "your vote not counting" which.. it doesn't really anyway lol. A lot of people don't vote on policy, they vote on how safe and well-off they feel and if they like the candidate's personality. Millions of other people don't share your opinions and are just gonna go with who makes them feel better.
As beardog said, "either those parties have to change or the U.S. has to grow some sense and stop voting for parties that do not want what's best for the states." We have agency in our vote if we are informed and demand change from who we vote for, but we're not using it. The more people cling to this two-party thing, the worse off we are. Politicians don't give a flying fuck about us. They care about being elected and reelected and making money for themselves and their friends. As a result, we have to use the thing they want most, our vote (and our money, but I weep for those who give to a political candidate), wisely and not give it to people who are corrupt and not doing good things for citizens. |

Trump said he was going to enhance border security and he has, he said he was going to crack down on the DEI quota and he has, there’s none of the usual political filibustering that accompanies the pledges, lies and bluster.
It’s what has adhered him to the voters. He actually for all his faults, deceit and blatant incompetence generally does seem in charge and appears to be wearing the trousers which Bush, Obama and Biden certainly didn’t.

|
budgie
02.22.25 | what he did:
President Trump rescinded former President Joe Biden’s order that extended the enrollment periods for Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans in most states, and granted additional funding for third parties aiding enrollment in ACA insurance. While ACA enrollment nearly doubled under the Biden administration to about 24 million people, those gains are attributed primarily to government subsidies that lowered the cost of ACA premiums. The effect this rescission will have on enrollment trends is one thing to watch in the coming years.
President Trump issued an order rolling back policies to limit drug spending by Medicaid and Medicare. In particular, he rescinded an executive order that asked the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) to consider new payment and healthcare models to limit drug spending. The former Biden-era order had prompted CMMI to announce in 2023 its intention to test three models aimed at lowering drug costs, none of which have fully gotten off the ground yet. The purpose of President Trump’s rescission is reportedly to facilitate better price negotiations with drug companies, as the second round of Medicare drug price negotiations are slated for 2025. Thus far, 15 drugs have been added to the negotiation list, indicating the administration’s intention to lower prices for those drugs, including Ozempic and Wegovy. |

02.22.25 | Yeah man, it just turns out that all those things are bad and some people are finally realizing they’re bad while some other people have been saying they’ll be bad.
Bad people saying they’ll do bad things once they get into power and then preceding to do bad things isn’t good. It turns out it’s bad. |
budgie
02.22.25 | President Trump acted to revoke several policies implemented by former President Biden, the purpose of which were aimed at responding to the Covid-19 pandemic and future infectious disease outbreaks by bolstering testing, research into treatments, providing economic relief, and enhancing cooperation with other countries in the event of another pandemic. For the most part, these rescissions remove lingering policies that have run their course after the Covid-19 pandemic.
President Trump, through the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), ordered a government-wide freeze stopping the rulemaking process for 60 days in an effort to review rules posted in the Federal Register. This freeze includes and implicates HHS’s ability to issue healthcare regulations. During the regulatory freeze, HHS will assess the regulatory landscape and decide which regulations it wants to keep or toss from the former administration. It will also assess regulations proposed but not finalized under the former administration, including the proposed updates to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Security Rule and the proposed rule for the prescribing of controlled substances via telehealth. We’ll be watching for how the Trump administration will deal with the proposed updates to Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D prescription drug programs. The freeze ends on February 1st. |
budgie
02.22.25 | In conjunction with the directive to freeze the regulatory process, the Trump administration issued OMB Memorandum M-25-13, which sought to place a temporary pause on trillions of dollars of federal grants and loans. However, the OMB quickly rescinded its memorandum after a federal judge blocked the order for constitutionality concerns after legal challenges from nonprofit organizations and concerns from state and local governments over the freeze’s impact on health care and crucial infrastructure spending. The White House clarified that this was not a rescission of their intent to implement a funding freeze, but rather an attempt to alleviate confusion around the application of the directive and doubled down on their commitment to review federal spending. For many hospitals and healthcare providers, a pause on the receipt of federal grants and other financial assistance could have a substantial impact on their ability to provide care to their patients. As a result, hospitals and healthcare provides should closely track this initiative from the Trump administration and the legal challenges as it makes its way through the courts. |

02.23.25 | I feel enormous amounts of existential dread about this administration. I honestly feel less inclined to be in common white spaces because I can't help but look around like "who voted for this shit that is so clearly antithetical to my personhood?" GOP fucks are using DEI like a slur and taken to insinuating that if ANY minority has a position anywhere that it's because of DEI and they could never possibly be qualified to be there. It's insulting and dehumanizing, but that's those folks' bread and butter. Scapegoat everyone else and turn a blind eye to their own mediocrity. Half of the motherfuckers complaining about DEI ruining the country had someone in their family get them a job. Immigrants, documented or otherwise, literally bolster or economy and give more us more than they take. They give us billions in taxes between buying products here and contributing to social security and medicare that they'll likely not get to even use. Statistically they're less likely to commit a crime than a US citizen. Personally Americans have done more to hurt me than any immigrant ever could. Human quality of life will always be more important than lines on a map.
The GOP is basically a cult. They run on pseudo intellectual garbage at the best of times and completely emotion driven xenophobic drivel more often than not, parroting these ultra-traditionalist standards that they themselves don't even live up to. Satire is dead, it's our lives instead. How utterly disingenuous is it for an administration full of mfs with sexual misconduct convictions claiming to do ANYTHING for women's safety? It's laughable.
But the country brought this shit on itself, the writing was on the wall a thousand times over and tens of millions still voted for that fuck. Not that the democrats don't have blood on their hands in this. In this toxic culture, people blindly worship wealth, power, and the people who have it like many worship god. It's impossible to believe that the state is ever going to save us from itself. Grassroots movements and mutual aid groups have to build so intently rn. And if people on the ground don't organize, and just keep complaining with no walk behind the talk, our fate will be sealed and we'll have a lot more to dread than just the next 4 years. |

02.23.25 | When it comes to the immigration thing, high skilled, highly paid workers are a net benefit and an overall positive one for the wider economy due to net contribution, tax and fiscal contribution.
They are actually more beneficial than native born individuals because they’re paying into the system from the outset and not incurring costs of public spending.
The problem is low skilled, low paid workers or those on benefits who have come in via familial student visas or illegally have a negative overall fiscal impact.
This is exacerbated by all the other issues that come with it, lack of integration, enclave culture, different cultural creed within the immediate societal environment and expansion of services without infrastructure.
It’s an issue that is brought up time and time again because it is a genuine concern for many people, including believe it or not those immigrants who are citizens
There’s uncomfortable issues that are required to be confronted in order to sort it out which is what the vast majority of people want but are unable to do so without being silenced, thrown under the bus or branded as ‘thick, racist, far right’ and shut down.

02.23.25 | yanks think they can take my country and can't even beat us in a hockey game |
MillionDead
02.23.25 | Zak, you really manage to take the conservative old man position on every issue ever. Integration doesn't mean total assimilation. People can coexist while being different, homogenous cultures aren't necessary. I can't speak from lived experience about the UK but, in the US, the jobs that immigrants take are essential, even in unskilled positions. Particularly those, because those underpaid farm hands have a crucial role in food being distributed and prices being controlled by keeping production costs lower, which is truly unethical and exploitative in itself but they're often coming from even worse material conditions. Almost every restaurant has them in the back of house. The jobs people accuse them of taking aren't even jobs that most of the greater populace wants because they aren't "successful" jobs. These are often people doing the best they can with menial positions and their supposed dependence on benefits is very exaggerated here.
I think all of this immigration policy is thick, far right, and racist as fuck. Call a spade a spade. In my state, they almost passed bounty hunting for undocumented immigrants into law. That's utterly fucking barbaric and antihuman. And you have regular civilians impersonating ICE agents to harass Hispanic people and dumbasses emboldened by this fascist administration hurling slurs and racist rhetoric left and right. It's appalling. And it's deflecting blame where it doesn't belong. Big money and lobbying in politics is a much greater problem for people here. Cutting a chunk out of our bloated as fuck military budget and funneling it into public programs and infrastructure would help massively but that's not even on the table for democrats or republicans. Too many contracts to line defense contractors pockets and enrich shareholders at play. They'll let working class people tear each other apart while they bleed the public dry until the bitter end. |

The mass uncontrolled immigration over the last 30yrs to the UK has caused almighty issues for the sake of cheap labour which in itself is highly questionable. The amount of exploitation going on is literally criminal.
|
Hyperion1001
02.23.25 | the west only has access to the wealth and material goods we do because of the exploitation of labor and resources in developing regions of the world.
immigration to the west is a direct consequence of this as information systems have allowed people in developing nations to see their wealth extracted and exported to western countries. the only way to solve this is to significantly reduce consumption in all wealthy western nations and evenly distribute resources throughout the globe.
this, of course, won’t happen and we will end up fighting a global war over it in the not too distant future. only western nations are to blame and they will deserve the consequences. |

as western nations continue to wrestle with the consequences of their imperial histories China will fill the vacuum and a global capitalism hegemony will continue, but centered on beijing instead of western nations.
capitalism requires an uneven distribution of finite resources to function, and is antithetical to the survival of the species because infinite growth cannot exist in a system of closed resources.
Which is exactly why the hegemony of global imperial capitalism will lead to global calamity and eventually societal/ecological collapse. at this point is near inevitable unless the global zeitgeist changes, and soon, which it won’t. |

Like million said, I can’t speak for immigration in the UK, don’t know shit about it, but here immigrants literally pay more into taxes than they take out in addition to everything million already said. Their collective crime rate is also lower.
There’s literally no reason to not want them here aside from racism. And conservatives cynically using Laken Riley as an excuse should shut the fuck up forever, I literally had a family member killed in a hit and run by someone that was undocumented, you don’t see me blaming every single immigrant like a fucking asshole. Let the poor girl rest.
And also want to point out that republicans don’t give two shits about women’s rights unless they’re already dead and they can weaponize them. More likely that western populations collapse than explode, and the lack of faith you have in humanity solving issues despite the insanely better standard of living now compared to a hundred years ago is pathetic.

02.23.25 | I would also love to be able to do what I would like to do, but with the current state of the earth, and the technology we have available for consumption and travel (mostly fuel fossil and virgin materials), our current consumption levels just deplete the earth to death. We should 100% focus on sustainable sources for these actions, or ration them. But guess what, the elite doesn't want to do either, because life will get more expensive / controlled and cause a revolt. And that is where I come to my 'spoiled society' point again :) |

A socialist dystopia as peddled by the WEF and others I'm less partial too.
I don't know where that aligns us tbh, but I have quite a lot of faith that big brains and money (aka resources and opportunity) tend to solve a lot of stuff for humans. I'm not a defeatist 'back to the caves and trees' sort basically.
Humanity could be stuffed though, I'm not hiding from that prospect. I have a daughter, I'm invested in the future and all that. |
DoofDoof
02.23.25 | Beardog - yes, the UK is an example of a government reducing its energy security and financial stability for net zero. Research it. It might work, possibly, but a lot is early science (carbon capture for example) and we just had two months our renewables went down about 90% due to the wrong sort of sunshine and wind, including turbines having to be turned off during hurricanes costing an absolute fortune. It's an 'early adopter' nightmare so far.
I'm just saying a lot of what you're asking for seems to have real world examples out there already, there are incredibly green and/or socialist governments really going for it, and sometimes it's bloody painful for the populace.
Tax burden in the UK is higher than post Second World war, it's all very very socialist and kinda crazy. Its hard to make much money in the UK. Maybe that's good I don't know. |
Hyperion1001
02.23.25 | technology is over half of the reason we are in this current mess, so I’d say placing your faith in technology as our savior is futile. we have more than enough technological advancements right now to solve all of our world problems. science failed when we decided it could be put to better use creating bombs and extracting wealth than creating a more equitable society. |
Beardog
02.23.25 | @Doof I can see that, heard a bit about it on the news. In the Netherlands we are following quite a similar path, which I think is good. But indeed, it is very costly, so we should support it somehow, because right now it is killing our people. I did mention that earlier though, there is a large societal cost to these investments right now. But that is also because we should have focussed on these things 10 or more years ago... |
Beardog
02.23.25 | @Doof, to your earlier point: Honestly, I am not involved with the WEF at all, I heard a lot about it from Twitter at the times from far-right voters, never cared to check their entire stance. I just try to think and figure out what would be right for this world. However much it sucks, I think we do need some kind of 'rationing' in our lives, because sadly most people (I don't blame them) live in the here and now, and just do what they want while our earth cannot support it. I think companies fighting for as much profit as possible are to blame for this. Capitalism for sure will kill this world, Capitalism is not a friend to our future and I'm sure you understand that. So it's either politics or us having to stand up and ration Capitalism via recycling, or ourselves getting rationed by consuming less. |

Generally that's the sort of place where they say capitalism has been transformative, hugely positive and the quality of life/happiness index/life expectancy of citizens is always sky high.
I wouldn't say I've a big horse in this race, I can definitely see that the wealth divide is insane, but capitalism also seems to work well for some nations/peoples, and is that the point of it all? :/ |

02.23.25 | 'Isn't it in our nature?'
Communism, capitalism, socialism, facism...'some animals are more equal than others'
Seems so. |
Asdfp277
02.23.25 | generally we don't need to choose between uncontrolled capitalism (anarchocapitalism) and complete control communism -- generally states choose to somewhat control the economy by banning things, subsidizing the consumption of some goods, etc. It's just a question of degree
"Maybe we as a species are unable to have a society where there is not a 'satanic' elite monopolizing countries? Isn't it in our nature?"
secrecy will always be possible -- we can't spy on everyone at all times. And some degree of 'elite' will always exist, it's just a question of how much accumulation we allow them to have |
Beardog
02.23.25 | I am not sure if 'we' are ever able to control an elite. I think the people and thoughts within this elite change over time, but there is probably always some group with more power than others. Not sure if complete anarchy is in our nature, don't know examples of a society functioning through anarchy. |

02.23.25 | i don't care if you support capitalism or not but if you don't support public healthcare I think there's actually something deeply wrong with you |
Asdfp277
02.23.25 | people seem to think that free market economics helps every industry, but this isn't necessarily true, and perhaps some industries like healthcare just don't do very well with it. It's a particularly price-inelastic industry, it's highly specialized, there are significant entry barriers, etc.
the truth tho is that healthcare will always somewhat suck lol. since the service side must be done locally (doctors, nurses, etc), prices will always match the economy, so you won't ever get cheap healthcare services within one's country. people always complain about waiting lines in public healthcare, but the reason that private healthcare doesn't have such waiting lines is because poor people just don't go lol they can't afford it
edit: there's no reason for drugs to be that expensive tho. they're products, theoretically they can be produced anywhere in the world and transported as needed. the only reason they're so expensive in the u.s. is that u.s. society has allowed pharmaceuticals have accumulate so much money and power. patents don't help, they don't encourage research, and most research is (or was) done with government money. companies get patents for products they didn't even develop! |
Hyperion1001
02.23.25 | you can always tell when someone has never actually read Marx or any other left economics when they bring up the “capitalism has a better track record than socialism”
socialism and capitalism were never meant to compete, and, in practice, most socialist/communist societies failed because they attempted to implement it far too early.
socialism is intended to replace capitalism once technology got to the point where labor produced capital efficiently enough to allow for resources to be equitably distributed, a place we’ve been at for quite a few decades now. |

That said, I don’t think some kind of retroactive end to all birthright citizenship will happen, but I won’t be shocked when this administration tries it. Even as far right as the supreme court is, I don’t think every single conservative judge is crazy enough to go for that… just Thomas and Alito. There’s a special place in hell for them. |

we should be tackling the issue of how difficult it is to get into this country and stay here legally. “unironically supporting open borders or thinking 9yos should be able to transition or that a surgeon should be obligated to abort a fetus at literally any time after viability for any reason. it's fascinating”
I feel like the last two are only terminally online people. budgie
02.25.25 | factcheck me but i remember a while back reading restrictions/allowances by each state and i recall that oregon and maybe one other have absolutely zero restrictions, at least by the state government, maybe there are other restrictions by hospital or insurance or something |

budgie
02.25.25 | the system in france should be the model: everyone has healthcare access by virtue of being a citizen, it's effectively free for a lot of people so 99.99% of abortions happen early on, if you want abortion post viability you need two docs to sign off on the surgery, can't be just because you're bored and don't want it anymore, but can be because of mental distress or other legit medical issues |

Four more months of paying nursery charges (higher bill than our mortgage payment) - going to be a sweet day that ends. Seeing over 50% of the household income gone on just those two bills has been an arse clench and a half. |
DoofDoof
02.27.25 | osmark - until age 40 I really didn’t have much income available to save.
Been paying into a work pension since aged 21 and I’ve stayed at the same organisation my whole career despite changing jobs there three times, but I get that is a pretty rare circumstance.
The Australians have really reformed pensions, you pay a lot more into their schemes early so you actually end up with something that can support your cost of living in retirement. I know a lot of people in the UK who only started paying into one recently, aged over 35, and still putting in the bare minimum. That’s saying you’ll work until state pension age…68. ‘Healthy life’ expectancy is something like 65 in the UK…on average people have some sort of life altering condition after that age (type 2 diabetes would be a common one), yet you’re expected to work 3-5 more years. |
Demon of the Fall
02.27.25 | I pay into a pension, my employer does too. It's decent-ish but that's where it stops - I don't add any 'extra' / increase the payments. I'm not investing ANYTHING else in money that I'll likely never see. Work till I'm 70? I'll be lucky to SEE 70, or at least be healthy enough to enjoy it (like Doof says).
I'd rather pay off the mortgage as early as possible, that's the priority. It's a realistic goal currently and seems a much more valuable use of my resources |
DoofDoof
02.27.25 | Demon if you were in your mid twenties then I would say it would be better to do something else with that money than put it down on the mortgage, some sort of investment or business venture. Later on the mortgage is a good bet really though.
Once that nursery payment finishes the plan is half the monthly saving on that will pay off capital on the cursed mortgage each month. Can’t be too sure of anything with the UK economy right now though. |

Exactly doof. The whole people ‘live longer’ nowadays claptrap fucks me right off.
Old age is no joke, the fact we are working till we drop is a massive factor in why things have gone to shit.
The whole ‘assisted dying’ thing also does not sit right with me, sold as ‘humane’ and ‘ethical’ while the bureaucrats are balancing the books. |
DoofDoof
02.27.25 | Yeah Zak, assisted dying in Canada has been ‘controversial’ let’s just say, certainly not something you’d roll out further based on their model.
Saying all that though, my mum would have been a multi millionaire and I doubt either my brother or me would have a mortgage if my mum’s parents had died just before they turned 90 - my granddad soldiered on to 91 but covid hit him bad, but my gran is 97 this week, she’s been having specialised dementia care in the home for 9 years now. Their time in the home has burned through a sweet £1.5 million of your Earth pounds…so far, £200k left approx, after that she’s at the mercy of the state.
She’s been effectively bed bound for six years now with a quality of life of absolute zip, she no longer has any lucid episodes, recognises no one, she will eat though (clearly!). Pure bodily survival instinct only. So not having assisted dying has maybe cost my mum being rich and potentially me really. Might be the price worth paying I’m not sure, politicians and courts in charge of such things is a potential shitshow. |

My dad’s adjusted by selling the holiday home, and taking out loads of equity in their flat. Then you look and go…ah yeah no shits coming down this line, hence again why I really started saving. Can’t count on other shit, imo not even the state pension which looks vulnerable in its current form.
Sorry to hear about your dad Zak, my dad had two cancer scares and lost a third of his lung capacity (two lobes?) and still has a scar on his face but he’s been clear a few years now. His were ‘chop it out’ rather than chemo, chemo is fucking hard to go through again and again. |

All the clowns in here calling for rationing of consumption who live in the grossly spoiled America would break very quickly if they had to live through any real rationing.

I actually did not vote for her, but since I live here and want the best for my country, I've given her the benefit of the doubt. Also, its pretty cool to have our first woman president. But yeah, so far she has not disappointed, quite the contrary. 03.01.25 | The sheer ignorance of these two fuckwits (and other US political names) giving Zelenskyy shit for not wearing a suit is astounding.
This guy is taking precious time out of his extremely stressful position as the leader of a besieged country to visit the US while his people are being murdered every single day, and have continued to be for three years straight... and you're going to give him a hard time for not wearing a suit when barely a week earlier Elon Dickhead Musk was trapsing around the Oval Office in a t-shirt and cap (in his newfound UNELECTED position of immense political power, I might add...) with his son wrapped around his shoulders?
What an absolute joke. |

03.01.25 | It's a solidarity move to show that he and the military of Ukraine are of the same mind, and are fighting the same war. That he is a part of this nightmare on every level, not a prim & proper politician who stands above it all and simply watches as the country he's supposedly leading is torn to pieces (a move that Winston Churchill also made during an infamous visit to the US during WW2, in which he was photographed wearing an air raid romper suit).
I suspect the US pressure to encourage Zelenskyy to don a suit is actually a far more calculated move than people are giving it credit. If I was a citizen of Ukraine and Zelenskyy was to appear on TV in other countries suddenly all spruced up, wearing an expensive suit and flashing a winning PR smile after three years of horror, I would wonder if my leader didn't suddenly have other things on his mind.
This was yet another attempt to discredit the leader of a besieged country in the eyes of his citizens, and he saw through it instantly:
"I will wear a costume when this war is finished." |

Aerisavion
03.01.25 | Sure, I won't deny that there's a certain element of PR to it - but then again, war is full of PR. From propaganda pamphlets, to visits to other countries requesting support, to addressing your citizens as frequently as possible in the hope that you can quell their fears and reassure them of their safety.
War is full of PR, but the big difference between Trump and Zelenskyy is the simple fact that Zelenskyy has faced three years straight of Russian's attempting to kill him, whereas Trump appears to spend most of his time screaming at people like an angry child, playing golf, and nodding off in the middle of meetings or casually browsing his phone while Elon Musk takes control in the Oval Office.

If anything, the US politicians getting all flustered over a simple matter of dress code vs human beings getting slaughtered on a day-to-day basis is pretty damn telling of their mentality - they would rather focus on the materialistic, the superficial, the dress code, the things that don't actually matter.

But, if you've got an estimated 38 million people looking to you every single day for reassurance that they aren't going to be slaughtered... it's not the same. You aren't making choices just for you anymore.

If the EU genuinely wants to outright ‘win’ (regain territory, Russia loses appetite to retaliate) the conflict then they’re going to have to shit or get off the pot, a lot more weapons bought for Ukraine or even boots on ground (this would be bad). I think they’ll eventually get off the pot.
The gravy train is coming to an end on this one I feel.
My feeling is there will be a truce of some sort labelled as a peace deal as Trump really wants to have that win on his books and will be very favourable to Putin…but Europe will be really stupid to not push to increase military spending. You never seemed capable of arguing an actual point, it’s all just personal insults, all the time, because people like you can’t attack the points so you attack the person |
Hyperion1001
03.02.25 | because people like you have to realize that we have all given up having any rational interactions with you. you can’t argue a position with logic and rational thinking that didn’t come from logic and rational thinking. all your position amounts to is making everyone else on earth as miserable as you are. you stand for nothing, you don’t have any goals other than destroying what already exists. you have active distain for anyone that sees building a better future for all of mankind.
people like you are enemies of all life on earth and now that the mask is off to the rest of the western world, your positions and your ideologies have been relegated to the same side of history as all of the most evil regimes and people on record. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | That whole statement is so insane on the face of it that I don’t even know how to engage you seriously. That whole “well, we’ve tried with you before and it didn’t go well” argument is the most brain dead nothing statement ever. Try debating the current point which I’ve given my take on, you literal monkey. I said I think his position is bad and could ignite world war 3, and you immediately come in here and throw out insults and then try to compare “my side” (which I don’t have, because I’m not some fucking chimp who sees the world and though a black and white lens with 0 nuance) to “evil regimes”. Just call me a Nazi, you complete npc. You know you want to, it’s all you people know how to do when anyone disagrees with you on anything ever. All that hatred and misery etc is bs you project onto other people, because you’re a 30+ something man child who crumbles at the sight of any dissenting opinions. |

03.02.25 | Gyro is literally case in point proof of what hyp's been saying, this motherfucker has never won a poli debate on this (music) website in 15 years and is still earnestly throating the rightie echo chamber's cock. Gets debunked over and over and just digs in deeper to the death cult. |

03.02.25 | gyro I mean this in the most sincere way I possibly can, please stop posting on this website, for the sake of all of us. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | If the conflict continues to escalate there’s possibility for a world war. Russia could try to invade a NATO country, and even if they didn’t have the military might to get far enough they could still launch us into a nuclear war. The point is: I don’t think peace talks should be off the table. I think every little bit that escalates this situation puts us at further risk, not to mention war is a senseless waste of lives in the first place. I also think Russia had reasons to be suspicious but I completely disagree with them for warring over it. It’s a case of: Russia is in the wrong but not being receptive to talks of a ceasefire is rly rly bad. I also am not a Trump Stan. I think someone in a role as important as his shouldn’t be such a fucking troll all the time. I think he’s extremely unprofessional and I’ve disagreed with many things he’s said and done over the years. Again tho there’s just this perception of me as being far right. All it is with people these days is you’re either this or that |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | I absolutely love how after my comment on how most of you are just posting personal attacks devoid of any substance or anything relevant to the topic at hand, and Gameofmetal comes in and regurgitates the same dumbass comment he left before. Who “wins” a political debate? Everyone just ends up entrenched in their opinions and thinking they won. Your critical thinking skills - they blow.
Shoutout to smaugman tho. Pretty sure you’re a dick to me itt but at least you can seemingly discuss the issue and not just resort to rage induced hateposting |

Gameofmetal
03.02.25 | The quick serious answer is the WW3 fearmongering continues to linger despite the clear situation that NATO countries won't go boots on the ground and Russia won't invade a NATO country, been 2-3 years, it's not gonna turn into a nuclear war at this rate. Ukraine just needs security guarantees against the country that invaded them and literally kidnapped thousands of children. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | Tell me which political arguments I’ve lost. Give me objective evidence that I lost any argument on this site, because most of this shit is pretty subjective and open to interpretation.

MillionDead
03.02.25 | Which is super fair. Zelenskyy has every reason to call Putin's trustworthiness into question, and that point was when Trump and Vance started berating him. Clearly Trump has more interest in appeasing Putin and doesn't want to publicly associate with any kind of criticism of him. It's all in bad faith. |

Gyromania
03.02.25 | Yeah that’s fair to say Gameofmetal. Maybe nothing comes of it, it’s a possibility. I think WW3 is a possibility too. Did I just get blown out of the water again? These are the debates we have. You have your opinion, I have mine. They are just opinions at the end of the day tho. A lot of economists and journalists and all kinds of people claimed WW2 wouldn’t happen. We’ve been wrong countless times throughout history and with Putin in charge idk if rolling the dice is the best option. Trying to get other countries to come to the table to come to some form of resolution seems like the best option for everyone, I think. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | I agree he has the right to call it into question, Million. So what’s the solution, because I don’t think continuing to fund a war is the best path forward |
Wildcardbitchesss

Clown shit. |
Gameofmetal
03.02.25 | Trump seems to just want an immediate deal so he can flaunt it, but Ukraine is giving up a lot of territory and not getting security guarantees if they take it, Putin would be getting off scot free with a big land grab. |
Deathconscious
03.02.25 | "Trying to get other countries to come to the table to come to some form of resolution seems like the best option for everyone, I think."
Except the problem is Putin won't accept any deal that doesn't involve an occupation of Ukraine. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | A lot of Russia’s reasons for invading are rooted in imperialism and wrapped in propaganda. Except for NATO expansion, that one is actually kind of real. Like guys I am not on Russia’s side and I also see why Ukraine wouldn’t want to concede land and be perceived as getting bullied. I get the paranoia about the future too: cede a little here and maybe they take a lot more in the future. But this can’t be a zero sum game. We’re so fucking bad at reflecting on our history and seeing how utterly pointless war is. There has to be compromises that can be made. This was the whole point: let’s find a way to make everyone happy, end the senseless destruction and loss of lives |
Gameofmetal
03.02.25 | Also people act like we're just pouring tax dollars into their hands, from an imperialist US supremacy view funding them is great because we're offloading old equipment and generating a lot of jobs and production state wide building new armaments. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | Death context is tricky eh? Because that was never my position itt |
MillionDead
03.02.25 | Why should we play soft ball with Russia after they started a completely unjust war, but bully the country that's there victim? It's almost like Trump and Putin planned out the deal beforehand. Zelenskyy isn't in the wrong here. The supportive response from just about every other democratic nation around the world is indicative of that much. The deal Trump wanted to cut gives the US important mineral rights in the Ukraine and he wants that to imply that the US business interests present in the Ukraine will keep Russia from further aggression, but that is simply not enough. Your position should be that Trump should stop doing tricks on Putin's dick. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | Game: maybe Ukraine agrees to neutrality but they still get some kind of security guarantees, or they get economic support to rebuild. And yeah I agree that not all the money is actual money it’s obviously a lot of surplus gear and what not, and yeah that stimulates jobs etc. I don’t think all this shit is purely altruistic tho, back when Biden was dealing with them or Trump now. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | I agree that in its current format the deal isn’t good enough. I think it could be made better by certain assurances though, and maybe get to a place that’s more realistic, because endless warring is just a bad option |
Wildcardbitchesss
03.02.25 | I don’t think anyone is advocating for endless war lmao
We just all recognize that deal was bullshit. There’s a lot of middle ground between those two things… |

03.02.25 | Million you get it my dude |
Gameofmetal
03.02.25 | In the meeting he was talking about getting them to pay compensation for the rebuild, which is probably not gonna happen. Pretty much no matter what Ukraine is taking a loss because they'll never be able to get Russia to do what should be done. I'm not against a quick peace deal, but it's not really for me to tell Ukrainians they can't continue to fight to take back the stolen territory and their stolen people. Far as I know they're still polling in favor of continued fighting. |
DoofDoof
03.02.25 | 'Far as I know they're still polling in favor of continued fighting.'
According to a Gallup poll it's 50/50...50% of Ukrainians want peace right away even if it means giving away land to Putin.
I imagine they'd want a very strong international security deal to make sure the same doesn't happen again though :/
It looks like there is high support for a big compromise in a deal for peace among Ukrainians anyway...you imagine as war rolls on that figure would only get higher in favour of accepting any peace deal. Russia have the stamina for that sort of attrition I'd imagine. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | Yeah Beardog, would be such a slam dunk if it was accurate to what I was saying. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | Game: pretty sure it’s 50/50 or close to. If it’s dramatically one sided then idk but propaganda def plays a role in public perception.

Gyromania
03.02.25 | How is it not aimed at me? The quote is a direct misrepresentation of what I was saying lol |
Beardog
03.02.25 | idgaf what you are saying, it's not aimed at you. I just wanna make clear I completely agree with the sentiment of the 'anti-war' blokes that literally want Putin to get away with imperialism and think he will stop after getting his land. Lmfao talk to the Czechs you dimwits. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | Who’s saying they want russia to get away with imperialism? The reason I said that IS aimed at me is because nobody is claiming that, rather trying to misrepresent my opinions. I haven’t seen anyone online yet say they think Russia is in the right here or that we should just let them take what they want when they want. The idea behind the peace talks is to find a compromise for everyone that doesn’t involve blowing each other up. |
DoofDoof
03.02.25 | Gyro - there’s a possibility that given enough time Ukraine could slowly lose…people seem to not acknowledge this potentially devastating end game. The old world order might have been the US policeman steps in but that might be an outdated notion with or without Trump… |
Beardog
03.02.25 | I hope the perceived plan to weaken Russia will continue and we ignore Trump's deal with Putin. I didn't think of it before, but the war is, stupid as it is, good for the industry and thus the economy. Eventually Ukraine has to decide if they want to defend but Europe for sure must do everything they can to help the country take their land back if they want to. |
DoofDoof
03.02.25 | Europe is incredibly dysfunctional, militarily there are some good eggs now like Poland, Finland, Sweden, Turkey (who knows)…some other countries making favourable noises like the UK, maybe France too…then a load of possible shirkers.
We will see, I hope Europe take this seriously but money talks and Europe is a basket case right now. |
Beardog
03.02.25 | yeah, that's what scares me too Doof. But after what Trump did there is finally some urgency. I think this was all a 5D chess move by him to get Europe to increase their NATO contributions haha (or it was Mark Rutte!!) |
DoofDoof
03.02.25 | Beardog - that's definitely part of the situation, not the whole picture, but that's part of it - I don't think Trump is entirely bluffing on massively reducing US funding for Ukraine if things don't go his way with a rushed 'peace plan'.
|
Gyromania
03.02.25 | I think if Russia declared war on the US it would be a disaster. People will look at military might, and sure the US has the better military but if a war was waged it would be fought with weapons thousands of times stronger than the atomic bomb. Like the size of any given military is pretty irrelevant once you factor in weapons whose potential damage is far beyond our comprehension. I still maintain that making a deal is the best possible option, and if Russia walks it back in the future, we deal with it then. |
Beardog
03.02.25 | Why the fuck would Russia declare war on the US, they want this deal you are speaking of and get Ukraine's riches the freest they can get it at this moment. Making a deal now that Russia is becoming weaker and weaker cannot be good. Europe has done the bare minimum, if Ukraine can and is willing to fight they should get all the support they need to weaken Russia further and further. |
Gyromania
03.02.25 | Ideally yeah, but if the US were to continue funding them and send a clear message that they’re against Russia moving forward. Idk man, tensions are high and I think the climate is ripe for all kinds of chaos. Ukraine is losing men, and it’s gonna get to a point where they don’t have enough people to fight. It was mentioned earlier that a lot of the funding is through weapons and supplies, not so much in terms of actual soldiers |
Beardog
03.02.25 | I think Russia would need something a bit more serious to start nuking. I think that Russia will not do anything stupid unless EU/US invades Russia, which will NEVER happen lol. Perhaps if we wanna reclaim Crimea Russia will go insane, but I don't think the west will ever try that. |
Beardog
03.02.25 | And yeah, eventually we will need to start sending men if we are not gonna send a material deathblow to Russia I fear. |

Could be true, I still don't think Putin is Hitler though - it has been said he's 'bad, but not mad' and I think that's accurate.
I don't think world, or even European, domination is on his mind, just reasserting some of the strength of the USSR. If net zero were to really take off then suddenly if fossil fuels are your major asset then you could struggle, and I do think resource grabs in terms of food production and mining are a factor for Putin.
It is interesting he has done a deal with North Korea, does add a little more fuel to the 'new axis of evil'/'anti-West' (named depending where you're coming from) theories I suppose, still seems a little far fetched, as ever China are the unknown. |
smaugman
03.03.25 | many russians have a disgusting, outdated worldview in which they are actually a powerful nation because they have nukes and a large country, and believe they rightfully "own" previous USSR countries because they used to be part of the russian empire. it's like germany threatening to invade kalinigrad because it used to be Prussia. just fucking accept the borders like they are, money is made through trade, not just owning the most land possible |

Agreed. But most politicians don't. They want an army that can win WW3. And it's really hard for people to argue against that. So we're going to spend about a trillion on stuff that can kill lots of people, just to feel safer. |
