protokute 02.20.25	I watched The Leftovers but didn't get much out of it, it ended up getting too heady for its own sake later on (which you kinda get to say about Lost in some way too but there is at least some very compelling characters that you care for, and their emotional arcs kept me invested even when the mythology got messy.). I don’t know… I was obsessed with Lost as a teenager, it was quite a formative experience for me. I ended up watching the whole series multiple times as I grew up, and each rewatch felt even richer, bringing new personal insights. The character development is some of the best I’ve ever seen on TV. And that early sense of mystery? Unbeatable.

Season 2 and 3 get a bit darker and there’s a for sure a more overarching plot, but still have that jet black sense of humor that pretty much defines the first season. And be prepared for this, I’m pretty sure it’s kind of an open secret that they originally planned on ending it with season 2, and it for sure feels that way. But the word is covid hit and FX was desperate so they asked them to keep going. It being dirt cheap to produce and in Australia were big bonuses for that, so in a way season 3 does feel a little tacked on but it’s almost as good as season 2. If all of that is true it’s really amazing how good season 3 turned out, and the ending is fucking perfect. The whole last episode is incredible but that last scene is just fucking killer.

About halfway through season 2 of Mr. Inbetween at this point (didn't get to watch as much as I wanted), but I'm still loving the shit out of this. We almost literally rolled on the floor laughing at the sex talk / caught in the act scenes. I've never seen any series or movie explain it that explicitly and true to life. This could've never been made in hollywood, and thank fuck it wasn't!

It's not everyone's cup of tea and season 1 is a bit slow. Top 5 tv comedy for me though.

DoofDoof 03.11.25	gabba - finished the the first 8 eps of One Hundred Years of Solitude last night and it was great, my opinion has gone higher. I'd rate it 9 out of 10, something like that, cast were great, fantasy elements were done really well, some spicy dialogue, some of the action was pretty brutal too. Surprised Netflix commissioned it and that it was produced so well, gives me hope they haven't aged down/dumbed down their output too much. Thankfully it's all recorded so they can't cancel the second half! - can't wait. Have to say it's blown the other show I've been watching right now, Severance Season 2, out the water - not been massively impressed by that second season, would rate it 7/10 when the first season was a 9/10. Will head to White Lotus Season 3 next...

With or Without still makes me tear up because of that fucking show A lot of people like The Wire more but I guess it depends on what you want more from a show. The Wire is for sure more raw and realistic but to me that makes so many of the characters unsympathetic. I still love it, but the Sopranos is about despicable people they somehow manage to make lovable. James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano is an all time performance too. I’d say Edie Falco and Michael Imperioli are on that level too, there’s just no one on the wire that I enjoy watching as much as those characters.

If anything, Breaking Bad is more accessible. I still haven't finished BCS. Peep Show is also a God-tier show and very immediate even if it's a cringefest.

It was alright overall though, not a disaster. Goggins is playing a good role in White Lotus 3 which I’m caught up on now.

I think season 1 remains the one that best balanced humor, social critique, and those thriller vibes. One thing season 3 definitely deserves praise for is the sound design—it’s wild how much trippy stuff they managed to layer into the background, especially if you’ve ever watched it with headphones.

DoofDoof 04.28.25	I'll take a look, I've heard good things before. I think the show was dogshit for a long time but when it came out it was actually close to groundbreaking for TV horror AND TV post apocalyptic drama.
