| GODFLESH openers ranked
For this list, the EP is counted as an album. I'm not leaving Avalanche Master Song off. | | 10 | | Godflesh Selfless
Ugh. I can't say that I hate Xnoybis, but it's such an oddity for Godflesh, so to put it as an album opener is such a poor decision in my opinion. It's a fun, almost happy kind of song, but it way overstays its welcome with its near 6-minute running time. The entire album is so back-loaded anyway, with the first great track arriving as sixth and the Heartless-Mantra-Go Spread Your Wings combo a masterpiece in melancholy Godflesh, but Xnoybis is an experiment that's not fit for an opener. I don't really know what to even try here except for trimming some of the fat near the middle and maybe pulling one of the songs off Merciless to be the opener to this instead. | | 9 | | Godflesh Pure
The first "snub" of this list. Spite is a well loved Godflesh track, but I feel it to be nowhere near the marvellous one-two combo that follows it on Pure. Mothra has such energy that it absolutely should've been the first track to kick things off. But as it stands, Spite feels like the closest Godflesh got to trying out a radio friendly single (is that a fucking guitar solo in the middle of it!?). It is inferior in every way to Newspite on In All Languages, so maybe Justin agrees. | | 8 | | Godflesh A World Lit Only by Fire
New Dark Ages is so bare bones! While this album got a lot of (some deserved, some not) flak for being their take on the binary metal djent trend, the opener is not one to dispel this criticism. Honestly, I feel bored with this track, and the followup is no better. This album only picks up by Shut Me Down and it is mostly down to the opener. | | 7 | | Godflesh Purge
Nero is a great and fun hip-hop influenced Godflesh track, but it's just so overshadowed by it's followups in Land Lord and Army of Non. I kinda wish they had put Nero in the center of the album, even better, replaced it with the Dub version which I feel explores the idea much better. | | 6 | | Godflesh Hymns
Defeated is a competent show of the album to come, without the fun hooks and grooves that actually make Hymns a bit of an underrated entry in their discography. I think the two tracks after this would have worked as way more energetic openers, though. With Defeated, it's not really an inspiring opener nor is it an off-putting one. It's just kinda... there. Looks like it's a common problem with the less glorious Godflesh opening tracks - they're just more subdued versions of the great ones right after it | | 5 | | Godflesh Us and Them
The black sheep of Godflesh discography, I often wish Justin had done more with this direction. He would in other projects, but he never got a bassist as good and in sync as Benny to go along. It's certainly a bold opener, with the frequency gated beat at the start, and it works! | | 4 | | Godflesh Godflesh
Avalanche Master Song is just a massive, punishing doom track that is only held back by some misplays in production and perhaps could've also been trimmed a half a minute shorter. But that bass groove is a serious statement of intent. | | 3 | | Godflesh Songs of Love and Hate
Wake has a massive swing to it that is just made for opening an album. The bounce and groove works so well, especially as a bit of a return to form after the more... unfocused Selfless. While the rest of the album does have it's share of filler, Wake is a great punch in the listeners face. Wake up, it's time for 'flesh! | | 2 | | Godflesh Streetcleaner
Probably a controversial pick, as Like Rats is for a lot of people probably the most famous Godflesh track. But I've always thought it was a bit of a misplay not to start things off with Christbait. It has a far more regal start to it than the very straightforward Like Rats. Don't get me wrong, it's an all timer, but neither does it blow you away. It's almost like it was put there to ease you in to the coldness of the rest of the album with some more recognisable metal moments, but part of me wishes they had gone even more balls to the wall. Even then, that off-beat middle section is still one of my fave Godflesh moments. | | 1 | | Godflesh Post Self
The reason I made this list. The title track has floated up to be the best Godflesh opener to me. I really didn't get this album for a long time but now that I do, oh boy. It's definitely the most venomous Justin vocal performance in this list, and the outro is just massive, with Benny's iceberg huge bass tone holding together that harsh hip-hop beat. But the very first notes are a winner here - Justin just starts the album off with a simple beyond belief riff that is drenched in Marshall goodness and it rocks. | |

02.01.25 | Btw, if I were to count Slavestate as an album, it might top this list. That rave industrial sound is so fucking good, I wish they had fleshed it into a full album. | Sharenge
02.01.25 | favorites are probably "Avalanche Master Song", "Spite", "Xnoybis" and "Defeated" | Lasssie
02.01.25 | Cant go wrong with these guys | gabba
02.01.25 | Still need to dive deep into their discog, everything I've checked so far is amazing. Post Self was the first album I've jammed, and 1 immediately sucked me in, it's super-addictive. Great list! | kkarron
02.01.25 | Yeah, if you haven't checked their last century stuff, you really need to go for it. Streetcleaner was a world changing album for me.You might really appreciate Slavestate and Pure too, I'd wager. | rabidfish
