12.19.24 | A coworker of mine has a pair of S45’s and loves them! Also that table is drool worthy | DominionMM1
12.19.24 | pretty happy with the speakers. picked them up off craigslist years ago when i bought my first tt. table got a lot better when i upgraded from the 2m red to the blue. much better at tracking the inner grooves. | Jash
12.19.24 | Yeah my cartridge upgrade did wonders to my setup. My speaker upgrade was great, but the cartridge brought out the best of the records and the speaker, well worth the investment | DominionMM1
12.19.24 | yeah its pretty amazing what a good cart can do but god damn can they get expensive | Jash
12.19.24 | Paid $225 for mine, considering how little I use streaming at home compared to my records it was a better choice to put the money I saved from getting passive non Bluetooth speakers into the vinyl side of things | DominionMM1
12.19.24 | for sure. i pretty much only listen to vinyl records when i’m at home so it was a worthwhile investment. | NexCeleris
12.19.24 | Beogram 5500 with a Soundsmith SMMC2
Beomaster 5500
Wharfedale Lintons
B&O have always had a style-over-substance reputation, but I gotta say their stuff is built to last. Obviously, having to use proprietary cartridges sucks, but it's a price I'm willing to pay. The huge, unwieldy Master Control Panel 5500 (remote) completes the retro-futuristic experience. Love the option to pause play with the tangential arm hovering over the wax.
It's cool too see others use B&O equipment. | DominionMM1
12.19.24 | how much did that soundsmith cartridge set you back? i have an old beogram and have been thinking about getting a new cart for it. | NexCeleris
12.19.24 | I'm too ashamed to say, but you can easily find that info on their page.
If you got an old, broken cartridge, they offer a retipping service afaik, which would be significantly cheaper. They might only do it for higher-end ones like the MMC2 and MMC1, though. You'd have to check with them.
There's also someone in Germany who repairs all MMC models if that's a valid option for you. His services are cheaper than Soundsmith's, unless you own one of the latter's SMMCs.
If all you want is to use that trusty Beogram, Soundsmith offers compatible cartridges for the lower tiers as well, the cheapest being the SMMC4 at around $230. You can often find used og MMCs in good shape on ebay, too (and can get them retipped by the German guy at some point down the line). | DominionMM1
12.19.24 | tried the ebay route twice and neither worked out. fortunately i didn’t lose anything in either situation.
i’ll look into soundsmith a bit more. i know they’re the only ones that received permission from b&o to use their patent to reproduce their cartridges. | CycleMotion
