| Hip Hop Digs 11/28 | 1 | | Gangsta Dre Gang Banging Poetry: The Sequel
I didn't give this album the attention it deserved when I first heard it years ago. Easily one of the greatest albums to come out of the Sacramento scene and honestly in the world of g funk at large. It's dark and nihilistic with one bright spot in Sacramento Summertime (same sample as Life's a Bitch, uplifting jam). "I Do My Dirt By My Lonely" is the thesis statement of this album and it is relentless. Gangsta Dre's coldhearted flow is underpinned by brown tones and $5 keyboards to make the perfect night time g funk record. | 2 | | I.M.P. Back In The Days
Though their second album is probably better, I managed to secure this rare debut on cd a month ago. SF legend Cougnut leads I.M.P. like a rottweiler with its teeth around your neck. His force as an emcee just punches through the speakers like few others. The beats on this album are classic pre-mobb music bay area style. Peep the timeless Frisco featuring Andre Nickatina/Dre Dog. Wish he did more songs with the group. | 3 | | Sun Valley Crew The Sun Valley Crew
Filipino G-Funk. It's so wholesome and sometimes kinda happy-go-lucky but not in a corny or beige way. It's genuinely so fun and refreshing to listen to. It's mostly in English but the language barrier creates some funny moments sometimes with songs referencing skinny dipping with the homies. It's such a textbook definition of the genre "g-funk" it's like a lost Warren G production. | 4 | | J-Live All Of The Above
It took me a few songs to get into the groove of this album but once I did it revealed itself to be so amazing. J-Live self produced half of this album with DJ Spinna on most of the other half. J-Live is such a positive rapper it just makes you grin sometimes because it's such an uplifting experience. This is hip hop at its purest form and totally improves the legacy of the year 2002 in hip hop. | 5 | | 108 (Hip Hop) Mission Infinite
Very rare and unknown boom bap but I feel like I've seen the cover a few times throughout the years. Did not disappoint. To me, it sounds pretty much exactly like the cover, which is some dusty mid 90's boom bap, though I don't recall if there's any mention of Buddha anywhere in the lyrics lol. It's sick and something I haven't even spent enough time with myself but needs some list preservation. | 6 | | Radio World Wide Bangin
Underground from Long Beach. Interestingly, this guy was signed to Interscope for his first album but his next two were super independent. No idea the story of his career. This album was his last one and came out in 2002 with an intro from Snoop Dogg and features from Tray Deee, Goldie Loc and Lil Half Dead throughout. It's super long beach to the core and the production is very good for its era it came out in on the west coast. I think some of the songs are shared from an old group of his that dropped in 2000 but regardless this album is pretty dope. Radio isn't the most significant rapper but I like him. Another album I just want to preserve on a list because otherwise it probably won't ever be. | 7 | | Mr. Knightowl The Knightowl
One of the most legendary Chicano rappers' first album. The first half is some fire hardcore g funk but the second half takes a turn into some unexpected old school kinda electro territory. The album's mission is kind of confused but it's still a significant moment in Chicano hip hop history with multiple songs that anyone should like. Also, the greatest album cover of all time. Look closely and you'll see his posse in the shine of the owl's eyes. So classic. | |

11.29.24 | yeah i wasn't huge on ramirez but it was a fine jam. im not big on that particular scene of throwback g funk cause it feels kind of hollow to me | jrlikestodance
11.29.24 | Finding you a hip hop rec is near impossible Drift!!! Maybe try:
Quelle Chris - Being You is Great, I Wish I Could Be You More Often
The Neptunes - Clones the Album
Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus
Surreal & the Sound Providers - True Indeed
And to be a little cheeky, The Ocarina of Rhyme. Zelda beats w rap acapellas I know sounds cringe but it's worth checking alone for the Still Tippin remix | Drifter
11.29.24 | haven't heard the first two but ive heard of them, heard company flow, haven't even heard of the last two so ill check out True Indeed. that zelda one sounds funny lol ill check out that still tippin remix | Drifter
11.29.24 | ok im sorry jr but that album didnt do much for me. it felt like every song he just rapped about how he was a "real" rapper and making real hip hop and it got pretty repetitive. the beats were chill but also didnt leave a mark on me | jrlikestodance
11.29.24 | No need to apologize I honestly haven't jammed that in a bit, I was just trying to be creative w my rec lol. Maybe you'll like some of the others or I could think of something else | Drifter
11.29.24 | ill check another if you check one of these :D |
