09.27.24 | It's probably gonna change a little bit with more listens and one of them is waiting to get 5'd |
cylinder
09.27.24 | 1 is 1 and props for 5 being so high but 14 is wayyyy too low man |
ReefaJones
09.27.24 | 14 might change in the future. Most of these I've only listened to once. I just found it to be a downgrade from their debut which was a far more enjoyable listen to me. |

09.27.24 | Good list indeed! Can’t argue with the top 3. I’d move 6 higher, and 15 is smashed too much on sput, but what do I know? I got into them just before it was released, so it’s specal to me. |
ArsMoriendi
09.27.24 | Only heard up until A Thousand Leaves but:
1 > 9 > 2 > 8 > 7 > 10 > 3 > 11 > 6 > 14 > 15 |
ReefaJones
09.27.24 | I still liked it. It's just that on first listen there were no songs other than Bull in the Heather that were standouts/ playlist material |

09.27.24 | Also you missed Ciccone Youth |
ReefaJones
09.27.24 | "Also you missed Ciccone Youth"
Not technically Sonic Youth though |

09.27.24 | I wish I liked these guys more than I do. Something just never quite clicks beyond the music being enjoyable. It stops short of something special. 1 is the best from what I’ve heard though. |
gabba
09.27.24 | See? Ars doesn’t like it either! Bull, Skink, Bone, Androgynous Mind, Tokyo Eye, and most importantly: Sweet Shine. All fantastic. |

It took quite a while for me to get into them. One of those bands |

09.27.24 | I feel like I actually listened to Daydream Nation a good bit back when I first heard it (like probably over a decade ago now wtf), but I let it go out of rotation pretty quick. Teenage Riot and Silver Rocket were sold to me as life changing and it didn't hit me like I thought it would.
It might be time to give it another go. |
ArsMoriendi
09.27.24 | I love Bull in the Heather and Sweet Shine
Self-Obsessed and Sexxee, Androgynous Mind, In the Mind of the Bourgeois Reader are all cool too, but the rest is not good with Screaming Skull being downright terrible |

Or try one of their later records. They're a little less abrasive while still being distinctively Sonic Youth. Try Murray Street or Sonic Nurse |
cylinder
09.27.24 | Sonic Nurse is awesome. super underrated. such a nice blend of their trademark noisiness with that lighter 2000s indie rock sound |
Gyromania
09.27.24 | if 1 is their best showing then this band prob just isn't for me. i like them well enough, i just don't find anything on that album especially exciting. been fkn years since i heard it but i remember trying it twice and not digging |
tectactoe
09.27.24 | Very based Top 3. Same as mine, actually, just in a different order (I'd go BMR, SISTER, then TN).
On the other hand, very sad bottom three. All three of those albums are great. |
DadKungFu
09.27.24 | That's a really nice top 3 there |
ReefaJones
09.27.24 | First 6 are all very close. I found them hard to rank because I loved them just about the same. Gave DN the no 1 spot because The Sprawl is my favorite SY song |
MillionDead
09.27.24 | Daydream and Sister are the definitive 1 and 2, Goo's actually my #3. |
gabba
09.27.24 | The Sprawl followed by ‘Cross the Breeze is magical. |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.27.24 | Murray St and Dirty are much too high and EVOL too low, but otherwise this has the right shape. Great to see Sonic Nurse getting its fur though
Gyro peep Bad Moon thru Sister — Daydream is neat as a statement album and I do love it, but the ideas on those three have much more edge and visceral impact imo |
ReefaJones
09.27.24 | Dirty is awesome. Theresa's Sound-World is a top 5 SY song. Also has 100%, Sugar Kane and Chapel Hill. |
Gyromania
09.28.24 | thanks johnny, i'll give those a listen. i went back to revisit Daydream Nation today and there are fs songs i do like. overall enjoyed it a lot more than my last two listens with it; kind of feels like one of those albums where i need to be persistent to fully unlock. |
Winesburgohio
09.28.24 | omgg best band, the caliber of their oeuvre is so high that seeing pretty much any of their albums lowly placed is a shock (until you're reminded of the quality of the other ones). even so, justice for 14 and 16!
Daydream Nation is a stone-cold classic and their undisputed opus, but I forget that at first it was quite unfriendly aside from a couple of songs. it's really secretly a grower and i think misrepresented in terms of the pleasures it offers, but if you can get a hook into it its hooks will then hook into you |
tectactoe
09.28.24 | At least we can all agree that 'Cross the Breeze' and 'Candle' are the top tracks from the album, right?
RIGHT?!?! |
ReefaJones
09.28.24 | "RIGHT?!?!"
great songs but The Sprawl takes the cake. the live version from the Basement especially is magical. |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.28.24 | Sprawl + Rain King are the top prizes yes
Cross the Breeze/Hyperstation/Candle all just a hair away |
ReefaJones
09.28.24 | "Cross the Breeze/Hyperstation/Candle all just a hair away"
On my copy Hyperstation isn't a standalone track. On spotify you can listen to it on its own though. |
