| [R4] Build-An-Album³: Spill the OSTea
Back in business. | 1 | | Burial Untrue
Hello Build-an-Albumeers, it’s been a long time. Too long in fact. I’d like to formally apologise for going radio-silent over this for so long, but the truth is I went through a very busy period of both work and other stuff and had to put it on the back-burner for quite a while until I felt I had the energy to do this again, which luckily for you happens to be now. Before our hiatus we left with submissions for the dubstep round, let’s see how you all did… | 2 | | Loefah Jungle Infiltrator

JEBBA
Summary: An absolutely exquisite playlist to start us off, one with a ton of love and care obviously put into it that’s both well-researched and thematically consistent. These aren’t exactly obscure artists, but you’ve definitely picked out a few deeper cuts which show a keen ear for that good old early dubstep sound. Of particular note was the Hijak track which I’m embarrassed to say I had not heard before, but am gonna be rinsing fairly hard now alongside some of my favourite Mystikz tunes (one of which you also got). Also really like the Kromestar pick, got a big grime flavour off that one which made me smile. Flow here is immaculate. Excellent submission.
Highlight: Hijak - Babylon Timewarp [4.6]

PAPUA
Summary: There were a lot of mixed bags in this round, and this was among the mix-iest. It starts off terribly and finishes very strongly, and everything else is somewhere in the middle. There is a good flow here, despite the generic, overlong and boring opener, which thankfully gives way to a pretty tight 2nd track in a fairly strong transition. Abattoir stands out easily as the highlight here, as it’s one of the only tracks not to either blatantly copy someone else’s style (looking at you Volor Flex) or greatly outstay their welcome. Maybe that’s a little harsh - this does flow very nicely.
Highlight: Kahn - Abattoir [4.1]
Tracks: 3.4/5
Flow: 3.9/5

HEARD
Summary: Ok this one fucking rules. And 95% of the reason it rules is because this flows smoother than a motherfucker and I have zero faults with it - fuck it, it’s a 5 on that metric. It’s moody, spacious, evocative, whatever adjective you throw at it just simply rules. Are these my favourite tracks of the round? Nah - they’re all good to great but individually they aren’t the most impressive. But together? Hell fucking yeah baby. I really love this. Definitely treads around the fringes of what can still be considered dubstep and what is borderline ambient territory but I love the boundary-pushing here, very unique vibe compared to all the other submissions.
Highlight: Azaleh - Emerald Sand [4.3]
Tracks: 4.0/5
Flow: 5.0/5

Bonus: Best flow [+0.5]

TAJIK
Summary: Unfortunately this one didn’t really hit any sort of stride until about halfway through track 3, and then failed to deliver on those vibes afterwards. There is a competent flow here that feels consistent and considered, but everything here is far too lowkey for my personal tastes and drags on for far too long without really doing much. I see the vision and could definitely vibe with this in the background, but I found myself wanting to skip through parts of this more than I did most other playlists submitted - not for lack of quality per se, but for it’s non-descript-ness.
Highlight: Ramadanman - Justify [3.8]

SARMI
Summary: Suffers greatly from that opening track (never at all got the Pretty Lights love, sounded really boring to me), but luckily the rest of this is solid. Am unfamiliar with that Renard project but it sounds a hell of a lot better than most of the stuff they were putting out back then which is nice, and tracks 3 and 4 work really well next to each other. Perhaps feels a bit more plain overall as it neither settles into energetic or groovy territory and mostly goes for atmosphere, which is fine but hard to pull off. Enjoyed this for the most part though.
Highlight: Ital Tek - Midnight Colour [4.0]

ASMAN
Summary: It was gonna take something bold for me to really appreciate the more brosteppy/EDM side of ‘dubstep’ and fortunately this does the job very nicely. I love how much this playlist highlights the one saving grace the high points of this style all have in common - top-tier sound design. The Fellsius track was incredibly well-produced, and track 4 was no slouch either in that regard. I had forgotten how much nostalgia that Pendulum track holds for me as well, despite being apprehensive beforehand. Yeah this was very well put together - again this isn’t massively my style but this brings out its best qualities very well.
Highlight: Fellsius - Mirror [4.0]

FLINT
Summary: In a reversal of trends, this starts off well and falls off sharply. Not for the quality of tracks so much as the fact neither the Shackleton or Floating Points tracks are remotely dubstep, which is a shame because the first two tracks are pretty solid picks. The Swarms track is a pretty obvious pick but hey someone had to make it, and I’m not about to complain. Love Martyn’s work too (although this track wasn’t one of my faves) which is a decent pull. I think there are Shackleton tracks that would have worked here (especially any of his stuff with Pinch), but that one was essentially just tribal ambient with no dub nor wub. Eh, it’s an alright effort but you can do better.
Highlight: Swarms - Flikr of Ur Eyes [3.9]
Tracks: 3.3/5
Flow: 3.5/5
Penalties: Wrong genre [-0.5]

PABLO
Summary: I feel like I’m being trolled here, but it’s ok because despite these songs sucking hot ass this was actually very entertaining to listen to the single time I could stomach it. Opening with the stupidest track featuring a way overlong and uncomfortably contextless Bob’s Burgers sample maybe showed your hand a little too quickly, but damn whatever I enjoyed my time. Never again though.
Highlight: Subtronics - Open Your Mind (Anthology 999) [3.5]

TIELT
Summary: Very moody, a lot of this is not usually my bag, but it ended up being cohesive enough as a whole that I could switch off to it and bob my head to it. First track was a bit too far into what RYM seems to call ‘dungeon sound’ territory for me - I’m discovering that this scene I have previously neglected is maybe not for me, but the rest brings a decent amount of heat. Really liked the Commodo track in particular. Flow is solid. Definitely one of the better researched entries.

SAMOA
Summary: The tracks here could work well in the right playlist I feel (maybe bar the first one that’s completely at odds with everything else), but there is very little in terms of flow or seamless transitions in this playlist which makes this a bit of an odd listen. Knowing 4 of the 5 tracks already didn’t help me either, which lost a bit of the surprise factor I got from most other playlists, but that’s not really your fault, and Midnight Request Line still slaps even on the 1000th time I’ve heard it. Just wish this was more attentive to how a good flow could have improved the playlist a lot.
Highlight: Skream - Midnight Request Line [4.1]

ITALY
Summary: Did Tundra make this playlist? I’m gonna be honest this was the worst thing I’ve heard this competition so far. Not only are some of these barely even dubstep tracks, but all of them are either gimmicky, sickly or utterly derivative, or a combination of those. This reminds me of like every terrible Monstercat track from 2014 you hear in the background of youtube videos and bad twitch streams. I have a little bit of nostalgia for a couple of those types of songs before i grew out of them, but none of these do the least bit for me - perhaps i’m impressed by the boldness of going for Lindsey fucking Sterling though, so if this was a meme I rate it. I’m sorry if this was a serious attempt but this was very much not my thing at all. Still love you babe.
Highlight: MitiS - Away [2.4]

HOORN
Summary: This wasn’t bad, but it never really got out of second gear, and kinda dances very far round the outskirts of what is and isn’t dubstep. There’s certainly some interesting choices - that James Blake track I’ve never heard and seems to be hated by most people but I really liked it. I just couldn’t gel super well with a lot of this though. Having said that I did quite like the flow of this one, wasn’t always an obvious track order but the transitions were fairly seamless.
Highlight: AgonyOST - Not Dreaming [3.8]
Tracks: 3.5/5

Penalties: None
Score: 7.3 | 14 | | Submotion Orchestra Colour Theory

MALTA
Summary: Starts off alright, and the Death Grips pick is a wild shout but actually works pretty well. I do have issues though with how much of this is just not really dubstep, specifically the closer and track 2. The majority of tracks here are pretty solid, but also not very cohesive in the way they’re sequenced, lacking either a smooth transition or an entertainingly volatile one. Far from the worst here, but I didn’t particularly get much out of this one.
Highlight: Appleblim - Mystical Warrior [3.9]
Tracks: 3.5/5
Flow: 3.4/5
Penalties: Wrong genre [-0.5]
Score: 6.4 | 15 | | mr. bill Mechanomorphic

MACAO
Summary: Overall really not my thing, a lot of these tracks are remarkably dull and have little happening. They’re predictable, the sound design which is the key selling point for this style was average at best and never tingled my brain at all, and I ended up wanting it to be over fairly quickly. Even the Mr. Bill track was pretty mediocre, and I’ve liked most of the stuff I’ve heard from him before. There’s a competent flow here, but mostly due to the fact that they all sound identical to each other. It’s not offensively bad or anything, just very boring.
Highlight: Mr Bill & VCTRE - Absence [2.9]
Tracks: 2.5/5
Flow: 3.0/5
Penalties: None
Score: 5.5 | 16 | | STUCA Resurgence

ALAYH
Summary: Amongst the better half of the brostep-heavy playlists submitted, although not really because of the tracks which were varying degrees of mid. This one has a really good flow though, I could def imagine this set being pretty hype at EDC or Tomorrowland or whatever. A reminder to everyone else that flow is just as valuable as the actual tracks you submit. I didn’t hate myself after this one.
Highlight: 2soon - YOUR LIFE [3.2]
Tracks: 2.8/5
Flow: 3.6/5
Penalties: None
Score: 6.4 | 17 | | Pendulum Immersion

SYDNEY
Summary: Bello, bello, bello. I love you man, but you’ve got to stop submitting playlists whilst on the VBs. Not only did you submit six tracks instead of five, but you also chose a track that was already taken by someone else. Your best song (Reol) also was not really dubstep at all. You know what, don’t stop, this was refreshingly funny after a fairly long streak of mediocrity, so props to you.
Highlight: Reol - YoiYoi Kokon [3.8]
Tracks: 2.7/5
Flow: 2.8/5
Penalties: Picked a song already taken [-0.5], Submitted wrong amount of tracks [-1.0]

Wow what an interesting leaderboard and still so competitive! You may have noticed a small change there - with a couple dropouts, the first elimination phase will see just 12 remaining. Don’t fear yet however, as we have one more round left to go in Phase 1. Let’s take a look at what the genre roulette has in store for us. | 21 | | The Bug London Zoo
Your genre is…
…
…
… | 22 | | Jeremy Soule Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Soundtrack
SOUNDTRACK
Why is this a genre? Who knows! How am I going to make this work? Painfully!
Ok listen, this is so vague and I don’t actually want you to submit a bunch of random ass songs that have been used in whatever film or game or TV show or whatever, because that would be pretty boring. Instead, I want YOU to come up with your own soundtrack. Not for your own life story, that sounds far too boring and emo. But you have to come up with a soundtrack to a fictitious game/movie/TV show that you would make, and I want you to give at least a brief synopsis/description of what it is. I will score you based on how well I see the vision you’re going for. I don’t mind wacky, be wacky if you want, but make sure you justify it. | 23 | | Soundtrack (Film) Barbie: The Album
What genre? Whatever genre you want, with a couple of catches. Your playlist must exclusively be of one genre (that is taggable on sput) - feel free to roam the fringes, but don’t stray too far or I’ll lose my immersion. You may also not use any of the three genres that have previously appeared - no dubstep, techno or new wave, or anything that resembles them too closely.
CONSTRAINTS:
With 16 participants still involved, I’m gonna stick with keeping this one short and sweet. 6 tracks, 35 minutes maximum. Wow me, don’t bore me. | 24 | | Soundtrack (Video Game) Mass Effect
BORING RULE:
The final round of Phase 1 is double points! This is your opportunity to sprint your way back up the leaderboard or solidify yourself at the top (there will be bonuses next phase for the highest finishers).
WEIRD RULE:
The little spelling game last round was fun. This one won’t be as much. The first letter of your artist names must spell out a palindrome, which will also be the title of your work. No they don’t have to make sense, this is mostly to continue testing your ability to follow rules.
For example, my techno album might be:
Helena Hauff
Autechre
Nav Katze
Ninos du Brasil
Ansome
Hecq
You get the picture. Artists with The or A in front of their name can be used as whether with or without. | 25 | | The Seatbelts Cowboy Bebop
TL:DR
Genre: Soundtrack (One genre of your choice), must describe your hypothetical property it’s attached to.
Constraints: 6 tracks, 35 minutes maximum.
Boring rule: Double points for everyone.
Weird rule: First letter of artist names must spell out a palindrome (doesn’t have to make sense).
Deadline: 7th September. | |

08.22.24 | The game starts off with a group of teenage friends excited to attend a "mock satanic ritual" in an abandoned bear den in the middle of a forest. Someone saw a poster advertising this ritual for Halloween and the friends thought it would be a creepy way to celebrate Halloween .
They arrive at the den late with the ritual just starting, (1. Diamanda Galas song plays now.) just as the ritual is climaxing, the floor opens up and the group slide down what feels like an endless slide, into what resembles the pits of hell. (2.Elend song plays) Now the group are facing a real satanic ritual, with deamons, Goblins, jonnyofthewell, and other scary mutated creatures. It is absolute chaos, and only everyone dies a horrific death trying to escape the creatures, except you. Somehow you managed to duck and weave through legs, fighting off would be killers, and as the song ends, find a passage of of the satanic hall. You walk down the passage as the song comes to an end. Now you are in a labyrinth of underground trails. (3. Natural Snow Buildings plays, as you try and find a way out) Dark endless tunnels, with dead ends, dangerous pits, spikes and other cavelike shit makes it seem impossible that you will ever get out alive until ... (The song builds up and you find a door, this is where 4. Nurse with Wound song starts, just as you open the door.)
You have now entered what looks like a giant laboratory with pods full of mutant creatures, lots of computers and other strange instruments, it's all very creepy. You sneak around not to be seen by any of the mad scientists until (5.Einsturzende Neubauten starts). This indicates in the game where you have been spotted by the scientists and they start attacking you with drills and other instruments, a big fight ensues. You win and now you are all alone, it's now time to leave this crazy den and head back to the surface. (6. Dreamcrusher song comes on and it starts off like glorious release) You find a lift and start going up the door opens and.... as the Dreamcrusher song comes to an end. The lift opens to another den. The words of the Dream crusher quote "What'll I do now, huh, it's all fucked up now" and the game ends waiting for part 2.

You're playing a variety of characters which are members of a motorcycle club called "Bone Tears Meat" or in short "BTM" with the insignia being a mirrored version of that, hence the title of the game "BTMMTB".
The Club just opened a new chapter in Bayou Country, Louisiana, an area highly contested by different clubs. Through a brutal turf war in the swamps of Louisiana, your chapter has to rise to the top and eliminate its competitors.
here's the sludgy soundtrack to go with the game:
Battle of Mice - Bones in the Water
Tad - Throat Locust
Melvins - Honey Bucket

09.03.24 | Redder is a bittersweet meditation on regret, the passage of time, and the harsh truths of a life lived in pursuit of freedom at the expense of love and connection.
It follows the poignant journey of George, a British man in his early 60s, who finds himself at a crossroads in life. As a young man, in the keen hopes of assuming a less banal identity than his own, he tried to insist that people call him Red. It never stuck.
[Robert Belfour - Pushin’ My Luck] George sits glassy-eyed in a dark living room, his weathered hand wrapped around a bottle of whiskey. Dusty photo frames of his family stare at him, judgmental and morose. He eyes families, unbroken and happy, walking past his house through a small parting in his brown blackout curtains.
George settled into a conventional life that he never truly wanted. After decades of being emotionally distant and physically absent, he’s left with the remnants of a broken family—his estranged ex-wife and his grown-up children, who have long since moved on without him.
[Elvin Bishop - I Can’t Hold Myself In Line] Numbed by regret and a deep sense of loneliness, George sets out on a road trip across the English countryside, hoping to reconnect with his children and make amends for the years of neglect.
He revisits the places where his life went astray, unsure whether he’s searching for closure or a spark. He attempts to reach out to his children, but his efforts with his daughter are met with indifference and outright red-faced anger.
[David Allan Coe - What Can I Do] After he fails to reach a breakthrough with his daughter, George is met with a slammed door. Sodden by a fine mist of rain, he is weighted to the spot, and feeling hard done by, he wanders into the town he grew up in and used to know. He doesn’t know it now. | anat
09.03.24 | Things go slightly better with his son, who is quick to agree to a reunion. They sit in a pub and laugh and drink, and for a while it feels like George has paid a small amount of dues.
[David Bromberg - Sammy’s Song] But as their time together progresses, and George’s son reveals that he’s spent the last eight years in an exhausting fight against a drug addiction brought on by his tumultuous upbringing, it dawns on George that the choices he has made has ruined a life he created.
George tries his ex-wife, the final ghost to exorcise, who came the closest to ever understanding George’s desires but is now happily remarried. She offers him empathy and closure, and is even able to wish him well, but is unable to forgive or provide the reconciliation he seeks. George is once again cast out into the miserable, lonely, grey world.
[Eric Bibb - Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream] George wakes up the following morning in his old and frosted over car. The song is playing from his car’s cassette player, and ends abruptly as the player finally gives up.
George realizes that the wounds he inflicted on his family run too deep to be healed with a few apologies and good intentions. Each failed attempt at reconciliation only deepens his understanding of the loneliness that has always been his true companion. The more he tries to mend the past, the more he is forced to confront the reality that he can never undo the choices he made.
[Rory Gallagher - Wheels Within Wheels] In the film's final act, George accepts that his life will not be one of second chances or redemptive arcs. Embracing his role as a wandering soul, he lets go of his last hopes for family and reconciliation. George continues his solitary journey, this time with a quiet acceptance, knowing that the blues - both the music and the sorrow - will accompany him for the rest of his days. | Sinternet

The Maladjusted and Loathsome Whims of the Wayward Longing and Misguided
[Merle Haggard – Mama Tried]
A simple and tired story that goes off the rails – ‘Insert stereotypical American country backwoods man name (but we’ll go with “Buck:”)’ has lived his young years on the dirtier end of the rural-urban spectrum and has decided to leave his dreary po-dunk life behind and make his way in the big city with big dreams – at least that is what he would have you believe… While his early-life community may have had it’s hangups and was assuredly not the place most would choose to reside, he was not necessarily the progenitor of his departure – his family and community had enough of his antics, excess, and vagrancy. After his most recent short stint in jail (Buck would say he had a penchant for womanizing, partying, and roughhousing, while his criminal record would say he was an abusive drug-addled alcoholic who got in weekly bar-fights) no one was waiting in their car to pick him up, his parents had changed the locks on his childhood home, and his exes had all blocked his phone number – a sign to him that he was no longer welcome. “So be it”, he thought, this big fish had outgrown his small pond years ago.
[Lightnin’ Luke - The Only Cowboy Bar in Portland]As expected, a change of scenery did not really change much of the behavior of Buck. He found himself gravitating towards the same habits, even towards people of the same background despite now being amongst millions instead of hundreds of people.
[Webb Pierce – In the Jailhouse Now]
The same booze, the same pills, the same abusive tendencies, the same attention-seeking, the same run-ins with the law. He found the same loneliness and excesses of the city as he did throughout his entire life and even less attention was paid to his indiscretions.
| PitchforkArms
09.06.24 | pt 2
[Willi Carlisle – Cheap Cocaine]
Things sink deeper and deeper as his booziness and petty-crime turns to more extreme egotistical adrenaline-seeking escapades – growing more attached to causing others physical and mental harm to scratch ever-elusive itch of taking center-stage, being noticed, and his next spiral outdoing his last one.
[The Great Atomic Power – Louvin Brothers (The)]
The man snaps – daydreaming throughout his drunken hallucinogenic downtown stroll, he imagines spitting at the feet of every judgmental stare he is rightfully getting, smacking the faces of any passersby who ask him if he needs help as he stumbles, and even gunning down a group of men and women for whom he had a few previous altercations with at the bar. In his daydream, he was his own true hero. Powerful – dealing out his righteous wrath with impunity, harkening back to his small-town church sermons. His daydreams conclude with him stumbling into a dingy alley and falling asleep amongst the trash and rats.
[They’re Hanging Me Tonight – Marty Robbins]
He wakes up, blood upon his hands, his father’s ornate revolver resting on his belly – no daydreams here. The flickering of police lights and faint murmur of clamor can be heard as Buck discretely moseys past the crime scene he most certainly caused in his mania. He makes his way to the bus station, cleans himself up in the bathroom, and sneaks onto a bus headed out of town. He's feels some sense of shame and guilt for what he did and who he has become but doesn’t feel confident or comfortable with why or how he comes to that conclusion – after all, he has seen himself as doing no wrong for all of his life.
Is he a “victim of society”? Probably not – he’s likely a victim of himself and all of the machinations in his brain, but you’re a victim of yourself, too, and you’re lucky you’re not him.
The soundtrack vibe is a bit of a purposeful juxtaposition of music that is very rural, a bit sappy, and a bit dopey pie-in-the-sky-esque for a story that ends up being quite urban, callous, and real/grounded feeling.
Likely taking a bit of a leap using American Country/Western, but I like the way it maps onto the story and I like spreading some tracks from a genre that I believe is underappreciated 😊

09.10.24 | I lack imagination so I kinda did your typical two lovers meet at the wrong time of their lives storyline. Think La La Land. Hence why I chose Shoegaze because that is literally what all Shoegaze songs are about. Also because I love the genre.
1. Introduction to one of our protagonists. He is a good dude but for whatever reason he is extremely insecure ('The beauty hidden in the pain). Think Mark form Peep Show but more likeable and less of a prick. He has this belief that he needs to be in a relationship and this will fix his problems and make up for his previous mistakes (Between the scenes, You should hold someone, Every Piece of time, You've undone)
2. He meets Protagonist #2 and is immediately infatuated and feels a spark (I want to know who you are, My soul is known/belongs to you). Views them as his guardian angel that has 'awakened' and will 'heal my mind' and make him a better person.
3. They are now in the relationship and it starts off very well (Lets search the sky for a while, You and I, Collide like two stars for a while). But whenever he 'face away' from her, he still has to 'deal with the pain'. She hasn't met his unrealistic expectations and fixed his problems so he starts to wonder 'is it really you?' She becomes aware of his insecurities too (I'm bleeding out, oh, you know) leading to the next track. | PitchforkArms
09.10.24 | anat - just listened to yours and read along and loved it :) | Zac124
09.10.24 | 4. Switches to the perspective of Protagonist #2. As she is now aware of his problems, he is starting to act different. More distant and cold as his insecurities have taken over. So she is sitting there 'numb and kinda drained' from this experience as there is 'only haze is in your head'. She asks 'no satisfaction here, are we even sincere?' She is too starting to be dragged down by him (You broke through my defense, The last one I even had).
5. They are 30 months into the relationship now and while she is happy it started it initially (He's my own), she imagines what 30 years down the line will be like (30 years well worn). And due to his recent change in behaviour, she starts to feel a difference in herself too, becoming bitter (Driving the talons, My own villain rising) which she is not liking as she is becoming a 'villain' in her eyes. They must go their own separate ways (You're not alarmed by this heady division?). I am aware this one is particularly a huge stretch.
6. In the previous song, she saw the worst of herself is coming out so she says to him 'And now it is your turn to evaluate'. He now realises that this is not healthy for either of them and learns that this is not the solution to his problems. They agree its best to go on their own ways (The two of us at the end) (It's time to let go).

09.10.24 | So my soundtrack is for a short documentary/visual montage of a forest soil ecosystem. The idea of the soundtrack behind it is that is generally laid-back and chill, but still very lively and full in instrumentation. Genre is chamber-folk (which is probably not an offical genre on sput, so you can consider it folk i suppose).
1. Agnes Obel - Red Virgin Soil
2. PJ Harvey - Grow Grow Grow
3. Fafa de Belem - Ontem Ao Luar
4. Fleet Foxes - I Should See Memphis
5. Pomme - Une Minute
6. Arooj Aftab - Saaqi
It starts with the introduction of the forest soil and its ecosystem - first by showing the above-ground trees, litter and growth. Afterwards it will go below-ground to show the life there with various fauna [song 1]. When the general ecosystem is shown, we will see footage of a tree saproling's journey when first emerging from its seed. We get sped-up footage of its growth and the forming of root mycorrhizal fungi [song 2]. The documentary will now zoom into the mycorrhiza to show various mites and springtails feeding on it, and while that might seem damaging to the ecosystem, it's shown that the nutrients released by the grazing stimulates the growth of other fungi [song 3]. We now focus on the litter decomposition process and see leafs first getting fragmented by insects, isopods and herbivorous mites and then further decomposed by fungi and bacteria [song 4]. We now go back to our saproling which has grown into a young tree into a further developed forest [song 5]. However, it has become clear that disturbance has put a strain on this forest ecosystem. Human disturbance in the soil has reduced the soil fauna community and nitrogen deposition has reduced the mycorrhiza and thereby the fungi-feeding animals. We can see that the litter isn't decomposing well and that many plants and animals are not around anymore [song 6]. The documentary ends with a call to protect our soils.
Most of these picks are vibe over theme but hopefully it can resonate | Pangea

09.11.24 | KAMMAK :: one man's fruit-fuelled sexual healing odyssey
1) Kasra & Catching Cairo - Guilty
Zak Kammak has a stupid name and crippling intimacy issues. We learn this almost immediately: it is the night of the Big Breakup, ground zero. Everything is his fault (is it?). Why can he not get it up (he can't). It's not me it's you – you! Am I that unattractive to you? Is it that awful being with me? Zak is silent, he is a statue, he does not know how to react, he is too busy blaming and hating himself and resenting himself for everything that's happening and being terrified of saying the wrong thing and not knowing how to make it stop. Say something! He tries, waves his arms, trying to get through to her, but it's all happening in slow motion but at the same time way too fast, and of course it goes wrong and oof yep, that's a glass off that table as he tries to mask his panic and gesticulate his way to coherence. Silence. Her eyes widen, suddenly scared, then narrow. Hard. She's gone, a door slams, and a second later it's over. Zak slumps.
2) Amon Tobin - Reanimator
Slow, painful montage showing our protag hitting the streets and doing his best to let himself go. No one has much fun. It starts with heavy brews and moves onto nastier stuff. We see him coming home a lot: he's very inefficient at this and it never looks like a refuge when he reaches that front door. We never see upstairs. A pattern is built: a bar, multiple visits, endless late nights, occasional interactions with the street girl on the corner that culminate with an attempted transaction (his pants stay firmly on; the whole thing is sordid and profoundly unsuccessful), after which he stumbles into the street insensible, practically tripping over the ghost of his boner that never was. In fact, he does trip – and falls right off the edge of the street, practically tumbling head-over-heels down a rusty set of iron steps to whichsoever basement level. It looks comical as anything, but our prevailing impulse is a wince. He clearly does not want to be conscious, but does not black out. He looks up. Above him, a door. Above the door, a loud sign invisible from the street: 「KLUB KUMQWOT :: STRICTLY NO HUMAN CONTACT ONLY FROOT」. From the other side of the door, pounding music. Can he sink any lower? What the hell. In he goes. | JohnnyoftheWell
09.11.24 | 3) Makoto - Open Your Eyes
Plenty of froot in those vibes, alright. People everywhere in all colours, throwing all shapes but keeping a respectful distance. Nothing leery. Good vibes! But wait – froot? Pineapples everywhere? No one here does not have a pineapple. What. Zak is bumped along in the queue, gets his stamp without realising it, and the next thing he knows, a girl dressed like a gym instructor hands him a pineapple. It is awkward. He freezes. She encourages him: Hold the pineapple, Zak. Dance with the pineapple, Zak. He fumbles, clutches, grooves. Uh? He goes. He *goes*. What is this? Lights spiral colours warble kaleidoscope burps – wait!? WHAT IS THIS? Pineapple-induced boner: omigawd. Something in the air? Redemptive vibe of froot? Can it be real? Yes. It is real (but dw it doesn't go anywhere dark or untoward no fruit are harmed). He smiles. It has been so long. He is a smiling human with love in his body. The pineapple has brought him back to live. The beat speeds the camera speeds time warps, he loses himself in the dance, the montage starts, the night goes on, his mental health is bandaged, he is going straight (though very much still not ready for an actual relationship with human contact). Days blur. Zak now works at Klub Kumqwat (the specifics of which are ambiguous, but involve a rough combo of bartender and gym-dance-fruit trainer duties, helping the club's patrons reconnect with themselves through the media of fruit and music). It is good – until one day, he's on his way to work as normal, first one at the club, rocks up, sees a weird black van outside. He thinks nothing of it, reaches for his keys to open up, only to find the main door hanging open with the bolt cut, and | JohnnyoftheWell
09.11.24 | 4) Material Girl - i85mixxalbumversion
-- PANG! The door to the fruit cellar is open too, and the whole stash is gone. Time freezes. Zak's entire redemption arc is a failure, ego death looms, total collapse ready to happen. Or is it? An engine starts outside and adrenaline kicks in. Fight or fli- he's out on the street, chasing down that van, wrenching a motorcycle out of passing bourgeois hands and powering away on it like he's never laid so much as a finger on one before (has he?), and reality, memory and idealised fiction warp together as The Most Important Five Minutes Of His Life hit their stride. Images flash before his eyes. So many inspirational flashbacks, every bond he's made at Klub Kumqwot rocking up to pat his back and speed him on to save the day. Other presences surface too: his dad saying some bullshit about what's in his heart, The Ex saying he'd always had it in him, just had never had his chance to get— her memory-grip tightens around his belt suggestively. He floors the accelerator and blasts that unwelcome memory away, making those gains. Yes! He can make it! The traffic is thinning, the way ahead is clear… but as he closes the distance, the van prepares to veer off and up to an overpass. Zak feels his last chance coming, and his fingers are just inches away from the van door -- but then, in the corner of his eye, he spies literally the most head-turningly motorcycle-stallingly beautiful human he has ever seen being held up by some fucko with a shit quiff, a knife and a Marilyn Manson hoodie. Time slows (without entirely stopping), an inner monologue ensues that probably overlaps word-for-word about 50% with the soliloquy of the end of this Material Girl song. A decision is to be made. What will he do? | JohnnyoftheWell
09.11.24 | 5) Adam F – Jaxx
Our man chooses good. He swerves off the road, wipes out gloriously on the pavement, watches the bike skid away and hit a postbox and explode a little bit and then a lot, and realises that everything has stopped and he's the centre of attention. He gets up, locks eyes with the would-have-been victim and pauses portentously. Has his fate changed? We are spared the pain of him attempting to make terrible saviour-ly smalltalk by a rush of movement at the back of the frame. Knife quiff man is up and coming for him. Hands wave, voices are raised (without actually breaking the [SILENCE] obviously, oh my gawd, and ow. In goes the knife. Zoom in on face. Eyes flicker. Blood drains, black owt.
Coma.
Pain.
Awakening. Hospital ward. Lucky to be alive. Cool. Mainly pain. Grey. Time passes.
The Ex comes to his hospital ward at some point, they have one of those nonsense romance-noir conversations:
"Babe, if I'd only known…"
"Whatever I'm doing here, I did it to myself."
Does this make any kind of sense? It doesn't need to: he's grown and outgrown her, and she can tell. He doesn't enjoy this and neither do we – but there we go.
"Well, if you're… take care. Take care."
She goes, forever. Zak has never looked more alone. He doesn't care. His boss from Klub Kumqwot makes a visit too, buttering him up with a minute or two of hero praise, after which, by the way, he's, uh, fired. Too many pineapples lost, the club is struggling to take the hit. Might have to downgrade to satsumas. But still, he's welcome. Anytime. As a guest. Thank you for everything. Goodbye for now (forever). This is hard for him. Doom spiral. Have to go somewhere, get out of here, start again, never think of touching anyone, find a corner, hide in it, somewhere something OW. Twinge of pain in his wound. Ignore it. Get discharged. Takes less time than it should. He's out, limping along, extra spice on that deja vu staggering-through-the-streets gait that's probably all over the film poster. He makes it a few blocks, and then he looks behind him and sees a car. Trailing the pavement. It's a stranger. Oh fuck. What if the knife fucko has come back to finish him? He thinks about running, but it's too late, the bonnet is level with him, passes him, the window rolls down and…
| JohnnyoftheWell
09.11.24 | 6) Kenya Grace - Strangers
…it's the stranger he saved. Total coincidence: uh excuse me? Excuse me! Sorry, I just had to be sure, but– oh my God, are you the one who…? He can't deny it. It's awkward for him, for her too. But she pushes through it – well, if there's ever anything I can do? He looks around. There's a twinge of pain, he grimaces. Come to think of it, he could really use a ride home. He says as much, sheepishly. Sure – in you get? They drive in silence, but she's comfortable in it. Comfortable breaking it too: won't you tell me about yourself? He complies: it starts with not nearly enough, and then the sound of his voice fades out just as soon as it turns into too much and he begins a full-plot recap like the awkward nervous stabbed man he is. The music takes over, the long reaction shot says her eyes are on the road but that she's clearly a little charmed by this. His voice fades back in just enough to catch an awkward pause followed by the word "pineapple". Her eyes come off the road for this – a what, really? -face. He doesn't blink. And then, impossibly, in spite of everything – [or precisely because of everything that he has somehow gained and managed to convey to her?] – the hint of a suggestive smile just before she turns her attention back to the road. Everything, somehow, is the most okay it has ever been. We are left right there in the car, with the warm, growing impression that this doesn't have to be the last time they see each other.

Name: JMBBMJ Genre: Noise Rock
[Song 1: January 8th] Infamous sex pest John Metropolis parks his 1989 Chevy Caprice at the far end of the lot for the Southside Walmart off Alameda. He pulls his meth pipe from his suede velvet jacket and takes a meaty rip before going inside to do some grocery shopping. Two shadows follow behind him as he strides towards the store with unwavering determination and truculence. He's looking for eggs, bananas, and bread...
[Song 2: Monkey Trick]
John enters the Walmart, carried by that languid yet bristling walk of a methamphetamine connoisseur, like Vince McMahon's knee-esplodin' Baby Huey walk but with a bit of t w e a k. When he isn't grinding his jaw he scowls at children and leers at women, staggering through the aisles repeating the shopping list in his head: "Eggs, bananas, bread. Eggs, bananas, bread." The shadows watch the meats as he wanders down the soup aisle, the gum aisle, the beer aisle, and on and on, seemingly oblivious to the great big signs saying "Produce", "Dairy", and "Bakery" in his methed- up tizzy.
At the check out, the bewitching prostitute Sicily Paris waits in line to purchase her groceries. She is wearing jeans, a loose t-shirt, and no make-up, but the camera still spends five uncomfortable minutes leering up and down Sicily Paris as she flips through a magazine, subtly scratches at her crotch, sniffs her fingers, and buys a liter of Titos. The camera pans 180° to reveal John peering out from behind a cardboard display of Surge. He is drooling and jerking his methed up dick as he makes eye contact with Sicily. She leaves her groceries at the check-out and walks out the doors without even a glance back at John. | FowlKrietzsche
09.20.24 | [Song 3: Babe]
John waits behind the Surge display, unsure of his next move. He came when he made eye contact with Sicily and now his light grey sweatpants have a sticky dark grey spot. He begins to slink into an aisle when he sees Sicily Paris walk back into the store with her pimp, Lowercase J. Shit. John turns to sprint down the aisle, but immediately collides headfirst into a greasy Walmart employee, knocking himself out cold.
[Song 4: Bombed]
Shadow 1: Oh fuck, he knocked himself out.
Shadow 2 stops feeding a microphone into package of ground beef and hops over to stand beside Shadow 1.
Shadow 2: Did he run into someone?
Shadow 1: Yeah, the freak from the freezer.
Shadow 2: Ooh, bad news for him.
The Walmart employee stands up, groggily, before seeing John Metropolis lying at his feet. He immediately grabs John by the ankles and begins dragging him down the aisle.
Shadow 2: Poor bastard.
WHERE IS THE METH HEAD
Lowercase J is sprinting between the aisles while Sicily watches from a distance.
Shadow 1: Oh well this is interesting.
The two shadows pack up their wires and leave the meats, making their way towards the back of the store before slinking into the freezer. | FowlKrietzsche
09.20.24 | [Song 5: Man Proposes, God Disposes]
John wakes up tied to a chair in Pepper Ronnie's sex freezer. All sorts of perverted implements are laid out on a table. Ronnie stands plaintively over the table for a few seconds before deciding on a dildo attached to a saw-zaw. He turns to face John, revving the saw-zaw.
A low whooping reaches Lowercase J's ear and he turns and begins sprinting towards the freezer. He busts in on Ronnie and John and immediately turns away in disgust. John is having the time of his life.
[Song 6: Jordan, Minnesota]
Horrified by what he had seen, Lowercase J mulled over his options. Someone had bust to his ho without paying, but Lowercase J was a busy man and couldn't wait around for the freak to finish. Ugh. A shiver ran up his spine, but he couldn't leave feeling disrespected, and the meth head had disrespected him. The hierachy had to be reinforced. And, really, the freak had disrespected him too. He considered shooting them, but thought again when he remembered he would have to see them. There were cameras in the store, but Lowercase J ain't no rat. So, he decided to burn the mother.
12 of J's tightest homies quickly pull up with several gas cans. They pour it on the floor while walking the aisles, customers and workers fleeing as the stench of petroleum fills the store. Sicily Paris waits out front for them to finish, and once they do, lights a match and the store explodes into flames. Shadow 1 and Shadow 2 are joined by a million brethren, and all of them are dancing together.
And thus concludes John Metropolis' Big Bad Meth Journey. If you read that all I'm deeply sorry and I love u Sint | ffs
