This shit put me in a weird mood. I was on a rollercoaster of feelings. Started pretty rough and I was not feeling the vocals. However, over time I started getting into it. This album has a certain charm that’s hard to describe. For a first album it’s pretty good but certainly has a lot of flaws. Gotta check their later albums because I think they have an interesting sound. Holy shit tho that closer was godawful and single-handedly drops the score by quite a bit.

I think this is called ambient? Pretty cool album that tells a story through depressing ass voice mails from a women updating her husband (?) about her current hospital situation. Seems pretty unique for the genre but I dont see a lot of replay value in this. Still a good listen tho.

Heh this was pretty funny. Synth player is funny. Pretty bonkers take on metal core if whatever this genre is called. I might have been into this when it came out when I was like 13 but I’m old now and this doesn’t have the Nostalgia Glasses for me to forgive how fucking cringey it is. The occasional odd time signatures were cool but yeah sorry not for me.

JOHNNY OF MY BALLS

Man I really like how this was obviously a punk record but not in the obvious sped up Sex Pistols way. Don’t get me wrong I like my Sex Pistols any speed but it’s so nice to hear an original punk band. Punk wasn’t supposed to end up being a uniform blah blah blah. This is going in the regular rotation baby

Hard, in your face, and wacky? Yeah I’m a fan. Love the high-pitched vocals and general zaniness all around. Whole band rips. I need to get into more Japanese punk and Japanese music in general. Quality stuff.

Yeah another fucking romp. This is right up my alley. Love all the different vocals coming at you from different angles and styles. Fast and loud and short what’s not to love?

ARSWHOREIENDI

Hmmmmmmm. I need to listen to this again. Didn’t really know what was going on most of the time. This thing is jam packed with melodies but they are all wonky and shit. This needs another jam before I rate it. I like it but I don’t know to what degree yet.

Felt weird about this one. It’s a little too experimental for pop but too poppy to be experimental. That sounds cool on paper but left me feeling unsatisfied and mildly irritated. Nothing grabbed me here at all. While the second half served much better than the first but I just wasn’t feeling it on this.

A wise friend once told me “sometimes even when something is really good you still don’t care.” This. This is exactly how this album made me feel. Like dude goes hard and he’s got an interesting flow. Decent lyrics too. Also the beats are pretty cool for the time period and there is lots of variety to the music. But something about this just didn’t do it for me. This is another case of an album that I probably would have liked a lot had I heard it when it came out. I’ll jam again to see what I’m missing but for now…

Based off the band name I was ready to 1 this and move on but holy shit this album rips! Every single song except Circles kicked my fucking ass. And Circles wasn’t even bad just not up to par with the rest. I love the long repeated sections with all the little variations. It’s fantastic. What a great record and wholly unexpected.

SOMECALLMECIM

This is some dirty ass shit. Pretty noisy but not overbearing. Kinda reminds me of a more riff-based Cows or something. Weird stuff but doesn’t slack in the songwriting department. Most these songs bang pretty goddamn hard. The vocalist is basically doing whatever Kurt Cobain did on Tourette’s but like for the whole record. Yeah this is nasty check it everyone.

CUMLYNDER

This was really cool at times and at others gave me second hand embarrassment. There’s some really cool lyrics and dope literary references (Franz Kafka, Bukowski) but also comes off a little too earnest at times. Dude kinda has wack flow to be honest. I appreciate the chances this album takes but it seems a bit undercooked and directionless even tho there is some scattered greatness here. The short runtime helps a lot but it’s too inconsistent for me.

I don’t know but this hit just right. Put me in a perfect mood to just zone out and vibe. Honestly tho this has a surprising amount of variety for being instrumental electronic dance jams. Lots of different tempos and just layers of synths and drums and samples and whatever. It’s fucking wonderful. A little long but not too bad there’s definitely enough here to justify the length. Need to check more of this kinda music. Thanks for getting me out of my comfort zone.

20Linea Aspera
Linea Aspera LP II

Took a break from this list and jammed the new Eminem album (I was curious!) and I don’t know if it was just because that album was so bad but this just felt so fresh and awesome in comparison. The layers and layers of synths was such a joy to listen to. I don’t know if this is just one person or like 4 but whoever made this record deserves a lot of credit. Just a great vibe and mood the whole album with this sort of melancholy haze and just perfect vocals that sit in top of everything. Yeah great stuff. I’m probably gonna check their discog after this. Definitely going in the regular rotation.

4.5
21Black Marble
A Different Arrangement

Somewhat similar to the last album but you know dude vocals instead and seems like a more actual bass than synth bass. But yeah lots of gorgeous synth lines and cool guy simple electronic goth beats. Yeah I love this kind of vibe but liked it slightly less than Linea Aspera but it was still fantastic.

ROBERTSBONER

Had pretty low expectations for this but after the intro that all fell away pretty quickly. Honestly the intro track is dirty af and kinda wish the whole album sounded like that. There’s plenty to like here but it does get a little overdramatic and cheesy at times. Doesn’t really matter tho most of the music hits pretty hard and when it doesn’t Brandys voice is so strong she can kinda save any wack track. She’s got a wild range and can get low and sultry but is also able to belt out some pretty high notes. Honestly don’t know she was so good at singing! What the hell! Why didn’t any of my sisters jam this album back in the day?

How I Do

Plenty to love here. As groovy as it is melodic and dark as it is playful. It’s got great songwriting, lots of personality, and style up the ass. Vocals are beautiful with just a dash of venom. She harmonizes with herself all over the record and it all just feels great. The hidden track at the end was pretty unexpected. This is great. Gonna be jamming this for awhile.

MILKINGMUSIC1995

Goddamn this is a perplexing album. Some great instrumentation at times that had my jaw in the floor. At other times tho I was like bro turn this shit off lol. The fucking operatic vocals or whatever you want to call it was so tiring and the spoken word parts didn’t do anything for me. Maybe this just wasn’t the right album because I liked some of it and the production was really interesting especially with all the panning and stuff. I guess this is the nature of experimental music… sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I’m sure this was very radical at the time but I couldn’t really get into it. Even the jazz lets felt off. What’s another notable album from these guys? I wanna give them another chance.

BIGHUBBABOOTY

Goddamn the guitar tone on this beast HOLY SHIT! It’s a funny listen cuz the songs are all sugary and whatnot but there’s just this massive guitar just strumming it up over everything. It calms down in a few songs but yeah mostly it takes up a lot of the space. The songs themselves are just a little too sweet for me and I’m a Ramones fan! The closer was my favorite because it sounded pretty dark and I thought it fit their sound a bit more. Yeah it’s good but I just wish it was wasn’t so tame compared to the ferocious guitar.

DAMNVAGG

Incredibly smooth to the point that it becomes a detriment. It becomes somewhat of a synonymous wash after awhile although I will admit the second half did was more interesting than the first. There are times were this actually feels layered and dense but for the most part it just floats by inoffensively and even a little boring. Definitely some good stuff on here but I get the sneaking suspicion that this project is more of a vehicle for this dude to get laid and less of an artistic endeavor. And I don’t wanna fuck this guy so…

MORTURBATE.

Didn’t really get this at first and was kinda side-eyeing it for the first few songs but the synths started winning me over. But dude by the end I was all in in and then it just ends! I love short albums so yeah great shit. One of those albums you want to listen to 2x in a row. The drums are bouncy, the synths are snappy, and it isn’t overly sunny or sugary. It sounds very of it’s time and I can dig that.

GAYBBA

THIS…WAS…WILD! Oddly catchy but that’s not the point at all. I mean I’m not really sure I get the point but it doesn’t matter dude I’m just going nuts jamming out. Drummer got his snare tight as fuck. Bass player rips and does those amazing distorted basslines and everything just rips. Falls off the rails a few times in the best way possible. Maybe a bad comparison but sort of maybe a bit like if mars Volta turned the fun up to 11. Super funky too but not in a traditional sense at all. More jazz than funk. What am I even saying? I don’t know what I’m listening to but I love it.

INVAG

I’ve heard this before but it’s been many years so it’s a good excuse to give it another jam. Man I can’t believe I had this 3.5’d. Eddie hazel has an absolute mastery in tone and technicality on guitar. Dudes a wizard. He also makes some pretty great choices in terms covers. Opens with absolutely beautiful rendition of California Dreamin’ but the Beatles cover of She’s So Heavy might actually be better than the original. Whole band is on fire on this one too. Bass player plays a slightly different style of funk bass where he really hits on the accents of the beat. Great stuff and super underrated.

HAWK TUA

Really cool to hear all the different versions of them same songs. All the slight variations kept me interested and made the songs sort of widen their scope a little bit so to speak. Super upbeat jazz that’s pretty hard not to like. It does get get pretty bonkers too at times. All the players are bringing it on this. Not much to complain about this just a solid jazz album.

The Pimp & Da Gangsta

Not really used to this style of hip hop. Is this southern? I like the fast double time flows these guys do and the vocals are very powerful throughout the entire run time. The beats are smooth but eerie and got a cool chill but creepy vibe to them. My issue with this album is I’m not really sure if these strong vocals gel with the sinister minimalist beats. Maybe I’m just not used to it. Good album though.

3.5

Kiss the Ring

CONDUCTER WE HAVE A PROBLEM! This is more my style. The beats are still sort of laid back but way more samples than the last album. Pretty good choices in the sample department. Dude has a great flow and has that high energy type of style. Mostly good lyrics although there are a few corny similes. I blame lil Wayne for that influence. Good beats and good flow. Some of the features feel a little weak in comparison but yeah very few complaints on this.

33Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
I Wish My Brother George Was Here

Yeah I already own this on vinyl and heard it like a billion times. Actually one of the albums that initially got me into hip hop. Del has always been funny but he’s in rare form here with songs like “The Wacky World of Rapid Transit” and “Pissin on Your Steps.” It’s super funky and a good time but its strength is also sort of its weakness. The funkiness feels more Parliament and less Funkadelic if you know what I mean even tho there is a Funkadelic sample on “Dark Skin Girls.” Not the best Del solo album for me the distinction goes to No Need For Alarm where he still has that funkiness but in a much more fresh and experimental style. Still this is an amazing debut record. I had it 3.5’d for some reason but it’s definitely at least a ….

Hmmmmmmm not gonna lie I didn’t get this album at all. Didn’t know what it was going for or why. I have no idea if this accomplished its goals or not because I really just don’t understand it. That being said some of the creepy fucking horror synths are tasty af. I got give it points for being original as well. Short runtime is also a plus and the songs just sort of bust in freak you out and leave. But yeah this is so goddamn strange haha. Definitely need to give it a few more listens to wrap my head around it. Title track rules and the samples are really interesting and cool. Strange album. Can’t say I like everything here but it kept me on my toes so for now I’ll slap it with a….

Jesus Christ what a gorgeous album. Perfect programmed drums. Keeps it danceable without being overly complex. Amazing synth work that amps up the mood and adds a lot of melody. Ugly guitar that plays the “wrong” note a lot to great effect. Yeah it’s just really well done goth music and the non-English vocals add so much vibe to this already dripping record. Possibly my favorite of the list so far?

RYBUST

I got to give this album a few points for having some pretty hilarious lyrics at times. The whole album just had the sort of ridiculous vibe the can be pretty goddamn funny. I do think it might be unintentional at times but who knows? The beats are mostly really cool but dude has such a weird style of rapping. He’s constantly rapping off beat which he even acknowledges on the record (lol) and likes to rhyme the same words with each other all the time. I like his energy tho and he can get pretty rowdy so I’ll slap it with a…

EGAREOLA

Ok the auxiliary percussion or whatever you want to call it alone makes this album amazing. The so much banging and clanging and what not going on amongst all the ridiculous happening in the songs. Normally I’m not much of a metal guy but this had so much variety and quirkiness that it’s sort charming and hard not to find enjoyment here. Yeah it’s metal but it goes into all kinds of other genres and just weird sections where you wonder how the song got there. It’s really impressive and hit all around a good time. The musicianship on display is amazing. Really great record. Can’t say enough good things about it.

ROLEPLAY GIRL

Pretty ferocious femme punk. In your face and brash. Yeah I’m never not gonna like shit like this. Definitely not doing anything new but it’s solid af. Catchy but not overly poppy or anything. I guess if I were to complain it’s a bit on the slower side but whatever it’s not a hardcore record or anything.

39Vylet Pony
Cutiemarks (And the Things That Bind Us)

Ok ok ok…. Like literally none of this is for me at all. I’m not the target audience. So don’t be mad when I say this absolutely sucks…. But only from a subjective standpoint. Like I was consistently cringing throughout this whole album. Second hand embarrassment all over the place. That being said the album is INSANELY well done. I’m sure this is a landmark in the genre (dubstep? I have no idea). It just feels like a lot of effort went into this and it’s crafted remarkably. Very impressive how this project also goes fucking ham on tracks. Shit gets heavy. I just feel bad because I can’t truly appreciate the hard work to at obviously went into this album. It just sounds really bad to my ears even tho it’s extremely good.

40The Outline
You Smash It, We'll Build Around It

Was not feeling this at all. Didn’t like the vibe. Didn’t like the songwriting. Just didn’t gel with this record on anyway. I did quite like the campy kinda sound they were going towards the end of the album with all the over the top piano. “Perfect For The Plain” was a fun stomping jam and the closer was not that dissimilar from some early Bad Seeds material. Maybe if the whole album was that kinda style I’d score it higher but mostly it is a mostly boring rock and roll record.

2
41Rakta
Falha Comum

Really cool album. Atmosphere all over the place and the approach is really cool. Not so much songs in the traditional sense but more like themes or something. Has a bit of a Flowers of Romance feel to it for some reason. Love all the chant style vocals. Just a really cool vibe that isn’t too long and if anything is maybe even a tad short. Could’ve used maybe one more track.

42Renaissance

FAPCUM

Musicianship is top notch on here. The piano playing alone is off the charts. No hiccups or anything. Everything is played “perfectly.” But yeah because everything is so exquisite it comes off a little sanitized to me. This is probably one of those albums where the more you hear it the more you pick up and appreciate. There are some really cool moments sprinkled throughout the entire album. This is just a personal taste issue. I just don’t see myself jamming this on my own time. Like if it was ever on I wouldn’t really complain but it’s just not something i normally fuck with. And that sucks but that’s just how it be sometimes.

The whitest thing of all time.

SHAMEFUCK

Another case of not bad but just doesn’t jive with my personal taste. It’s some coffee shop sad girl music. Very innocuous and honestly kinda boring. The cringe meter stays relatively low but yeah I just don’t really feel like listening to this type of Starbucks music 99.9% of the time. Some cool mixing choices and production. Vocal harmonies are solid the whole record. Couple extra points for being short in the length side. I’m just not in the mood dude.

BUTTKISS

Sort of a mellow take on funk/soul. The organs and keys are amazing. Super solid rhythms and the social commentary all push this thing into amazing status. All the extra percussion add so much flavor and much needed push since the songs are a bit chill. Idle Hands kicks all kinds of ass. Love how it’s pretty short with only a few songs. No filler found here. I don’t really have anything bad to say about this. It fucking rules everyone jam this.

RYASS

This kinda rules. I always like listening to different versions of the same song and almost every song here is some variation. First song kinda pulled me into some false sense of soul techno or something. I still don’t really know anything about this type of music so I don’t have much insight. But you know I’ll tell you wut it’s interesting to listen to and has some booty-shaking rhythms so it doesn’t really matter. Whatever the people that made this record are doing it sounds pretty good. I don’t know it doesn’t make me think deeply or reflect or anything but it’s fun to just let this record play and grind in Elden Ring for a few hours or something.

SNAKE

Damn dude. I mean maybe if I just got divorced or something I might have a different perspective on this. It was all just depressed guy music. Which is fine I got nothing against that type of thing but like I’m not in the mood man. I’m sure this album is really good when it hits but it ain’t hitting for me cuz I’m just sitting on a bus like bro how are you making this ride even longer? The instrumentation is fine for the most part. You got some twinkling guitars and soft pitter patter drums. Maybe a cello here and a harmonica there. I don’t know it’s all just so slow. If I was like driving across the country and was just sad as hell I would probably dig this but I ain’t so I’m not. Not bad just not in the mood. Uuuuuhhhhhhhh I liked the super long closer for some reason I don’t know why. Maybe the repetitiveness or some such?
