Queen albums ranked

Queen are phenomenal, but really only their 70's albums and Innuendo were super impressive. They deserve their acclaim and love nonetheless, and I love just how versatile with music styles and genres they were! Brian May is an excellent guitarist and lyricist, Freddie's vocals are beautiful and work with any genre, and I love Roger Taylor's drumming! Deacon is pretty nice too.

News of the World

Great variety beyond the two hits at the start, great musicianship and since Freddie doesn't write so many songs on this, it lets everyone shine. It's also easily their second heaviest album behind Queen II. This album was panned critically initially on release, but overtime has accumulated a lot of positive retrospective reviews, and for good reason!

It's truly their greatest work and most consistent set of songs. One of the best albums of all time also.

A Night at the Opera

For all the theatrics, flamboyancy, and sheer experimentation embedded into their music, this is where it all worked once again and came together in what felt like a full on experience; something an album band such as The Who or Pink Floyd are known for. Queen's style of rock opera has never been heard before up until this point, and what a way to set the wheels in motion!

Lyrical themes range from science fantasy to love and heartbreak, and at the time this was the most expensive album ever created. Even the naysayer critics of the 70's had finally warmed up to them with this release and retrospectively this and their previous album are regarded as some of the best of all time.

Sheer Heart Attack

One of their most versatile albums with one of the best guitar solos of all time on "Brighton Rock". The rest of the album shines through too, with no bad tracks though there are a few weaker ones, it's one of their most consistently great releases and it definitely deserves its status among the best albums of all time.

This also was their breakthrough album that got them big in the U.S finally, and "Stone Cold Crazy" and "Brighton Rock" laid the foundation for Thrash Metal influencing bands such as Metallica who pioneered the genre. This album would serve as their major breakthrough to the U.S. Coming just shortly after their previous album, by just a few months Sheer Heart Attack would allow this magnificent foursome to flash their jewelry and spread their wings and fly away into musical royalty, being the first album where they had got it completely right.

Queen II

This album is mind-blowingly excellent, and the fact that it's finally getting the recognition it deserves is satisfying. After opening the door to another world of whimsical adventures waiting to be explored, spells waiting to be uncovered, and ogres in the fantastical lands of Rhye, Queen manages to get even more focused on this album with a unique idea of two contrasting yet connecting sides, Side White and Side Black instead of your typical Side A and B.

Queen II may not be a concept album, but it does have a loose theme running throughout most songs on Side Black which is penned by frontman Freddie Mercury. The sound on this album takes use of multi-layered tracks to have impressive vocal harmonies, multi-layered guitar overdubs, and a vast exploration of musical styles. Despite having largely negative reviews from contemporary critics, its now seen as a staple in rock and held in mostly high regard by retrospective critics, other musicians, and the band themselves.

Innuendo

To this day, it's still insane to me how someone dying and very ill could pull off such stunning vocals. This album may not be as consistent as their first six albums, but it's genuinely terrific. It's Queen's last masterpiece, and definitely among the best albums of the 90's, and arguably of all time. There's plenty to enjoy here, and the band shifts the gear to full drive after their hit-or-miss 80's output. They finally dabble in art rock again for the first time since the 70's!

A Day at the Races

Some say this is just a rinse-and-repeat of Opera, others treat it as the equally good sister album. Both share a Marx movie name after all, and an extremely similar cover. But both of these are a disfavor to a genuinely great experience. This isn't nearly on the level of the previous three albums, but it is still great nonetheless and even with its weaknesses it is a phenomenal album and one of the best of 1976. If anything, this was Queen finally throwing away their status as underdogs and sitting comfortably on their throne in rock.

It isn't one of the best albums of all time, but is still great and one of the strongest in their catalog!

Queen

Queen is truly an amazing debut that is totally worth a listen and though it does sound a bit like a lot of other bands that were more groundbreaking at the start of the 70's (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones all can be heard on here), it is a great starting point, and definitely within the top 20 best debuts of all time, but not albums in general. You can hear bits of brilliance in this hard rock record, and despite the muddy mix, a lot of the songs are quite great!

The Works

This album is like an apology and an attempt to reach out to the long-estranged fanbase that the band once had when they were a legend, almost as if the title makes sense as they "went back to what works" in a way. Now, this album doesn't do too much to separate them from their contemporaries, nor is it groundbreaking, but it is a GREAT record with a whole lot of merit to it, which is very refreshing after two bad outputs.

Their best 80's album with The Game closely behind, its packed full of fun hits and it goes back to a more rock sound after the godawful direction they went in 2 years prior. It's not by any means their strongest, but it's up there! The lyrics can be cheesy at times, but it shouldn't be an issue unless you're a music elitist. In the discussion of best 80's albums within the top 300 maybe.

The Game

Entering into the 80's, this is where rock really got divided. On one hand, you got some fantastic albums and artists like Prince or Tears For Fears and The Police, but on the other hand you got a lot of cheesy "power ballads" that bring a filthiness to the genre never before seen of great levels of pastiche rubbish. Queen started this decade with this record, and although it is NOTHING GROUNDBREAKING OR INNOVATIVE, it is a great album nonetheless and a promising start to what would be a fast downfall.

Jazz

Their weakest album from the decade they peaked in. It's got quite a few plain good/passable songs, with some absolute masterpieces sprinkled throughout, and around 5 bad ones out of 13. Not essential listening, but still pretty enjoyable if you're a fan of the band I suppose. "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Don't Stop Me Now" are rock staples however.

The Miracle

Full of some pop rock ear candy, ending the 80's, Queen goes out on the highest note a shell of former glory (at least that's what they were until 1991) like them could have went out on, with a pretty surprisingly good Pop Rock album. That being said, it is still very uneven in quality

A Kind of Magic

Queen falls into the trap of inconsistent material, and bland vomit-inducing 80's production. You probably wouldn't even realize this was an album by them if not for Freddie Mercury's sometimes over-the-top vocals on these tracks. Most of the songs don't hold a torch to the album before, or any of their 70's releases, but despite the stupidity and uninspired lyrics and compositions, it has a very slight and strange appeal, making it bad but with some high highlights. The references to Highlander don't help either for those who haven't watched it.

Hot Space

Wimpoid soul-devoid pastiche disco mess. At least it inspired Thriller, I guess?

Made in Heaven

The instruments feel too quiet in comparison to one another, especially the percussion; its got a good concept and is executed poorly. The compositions and arrangements lack that touch that Freddie Mercury brought to them and it just pales in comparison to a ton of the other albums that were released when he was alive, without his involvement it just feels like fragments pieced together in ways that don't quite work, like scraps they took and tried to make work with what they got, with the lack of Freddie's ideas it's basically bland and pale.

Really should've called it quits with "Innuendo", boys. Instead, you sizzled out.

Flash Gordon

Ever wondered how it would be if Queen scored a soundtrack? No? Too bad, it happened! Is it good however? Boy, you are in for a massively disgusting disappointment.

There is not a single song here that is enjoyable outside of the lead single. There is nothing but talking, random noises, and the music is mediocre. Yeah, it's a soundtrack album, so of course it's gonna be like that, but they released it as a studio album, and none of the songs are enjoyable.
