1 or 2 albums I love from each year of the 2000s
Where was I? Oh, it's the decade of 2000s. There were a lot of post-grunge and metal bands that I found convoluted that I was uncertain of which ones meant the most to me at the time. I doubt I'd want to go back to my teenage angsty with my "top 10 nu-metal albums that's freaking cool" and relive it but *sighs*.....fast forward to this year, my music taste has changed drastically. | | 1 | | D'Angelo Voodoo
2000
This year had some nice variety of albums. Well-known albums by Queens of the Stone Age, Coldplay, Radiohead, A Perfect Circle, Disturbed, Deftones, Linkin Park, Eminem, etc. And there are musicians I got to hear like Gas, Susumu Yokota, Boards of Canada, Bonobo, Goldfrapp, Isis, Enigma, Recoil and so on...
It was a hard pick that I ended up to choose this non-rock album in the list. D'Angelo's Voodoo. I tend to go back to listen to it a few times without getting me pissed off. | | 2 | | Akira Yamaoka Silent Hill 2
2001
I went back to listen to 2001's albums I liked the most. Felix Da Housecat, Gorillaz, Monolake, Opeth, Rob Zombie, Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, Jamiroquai, etc.
Instead of Felix, it was Silent Hill 2's soundtrack that hit home for me.
There are some songs that move me to tears, especially Promise song. It still holds up to this day. | | 3 | | Pulse Ultra Headspace
2002
It is disappointing not to include Amon Tobin, Frou Frou, Mudvayne, Isis, Killswitch Engage, Porcupine Tree or Blindside to this list. I heard of their albums plenty of times.
But Headspace has to be my pick personally. | | 4 | | The Frozen Autumn Emotional Screening Device
2002
I wish I could've heard of this one sooner, but it was an underground electro album in 2000s. There are some cozy songs, if you love the 80s synth. | | 5 | | Goldfrapp Black Cherry
2003
Again, there are interesting albums that I unfortunately didn't include in this list.
Goldfrapp's Black Cherry, love Twist and Strict Machine, songs-wise. | | 6 | | Gwen Stefani Love. Angel. Music. Baby.
2004
I was thinking of adding nothing when it comes to 2004. My memory is fooling me again. xP This could've been Mastodon's Leviathan, Killswitch Engage's The End of Heartache or Katamari Damacy.
Guess not. Instead, I chose an electronic pop album by a member of No Doubt, Gwen Stefani. | | 7 | | Pan Sonic Kesto (234:48:4)
2004
This one is for those who want to purge the music that you think is popular. It's not for everyone if you're not into glitch, IDM, experimental or ambient. | | 8 | | Goldfrapp Supernature
2005
I chose this electro pop album in that year, while metal, rock and pop music were proliferating as hell. | | 9 | | Depeche Mode Playing The Angel
2005
Yeah, I really like this album. Have another one from Depeche Mode. xP | | 10 | | Killswitch Engage As Daylight Dies
2006
At this year, I became obsessed with metalcore and Killswitch Engage was my obsession in 2006. My Curse is still my curse.
I don't know if Breaking Benjamin is my thing. I don't listen to them very much these days, so most likely not. | | 11 | | Tim Hecker Harmony in Ultraviolet
2006
It's too bad I didn't discover this ambient album early on until I did in March 2017, a decade ago. It'd be a great opportunity to get away from the pop, rock, metal and hip-hop culture.
This album gives me a melancholic vibe from a fictional world. And I had to edit it after this list appeared some hours ago. | | 12 | | Fightstar One Day Son This Will All Be Yours
2007
This one wasn't so easy to choose for the list. My obsession of metal was inescapable and I picked Fightstar, but I appreciated electronic and rock back then. Sorry, Rihanna and Linkin Park. | | 13 | | Simian Mobile Disco Attack Decay Sustain Release
2007
I'm disappointed I haven't been obsessed with this one before. Oh well, how narrow-minded I was back then. | | 14 | | Empire Of The Sun Walking On A Dream
2008
I was thinking of adding Nine Inch Nails' The Slip....
but I didn't expect to add Empire of the Sun. I really like them. | | 15 | | Editors In This Light and On This Evening
2009
This one was also so difficult to choose and it's Editors.
It seems this is the album that scored the lowest ratings in this website. Is it because they changed their music style to darwave/synthpop style that "Papillon the monotonous, sluggish soundscapes become first uninteresting and finally outright boring"? Yeah, I don't disagree with it, but for me, I thought the synth rhythm wasn't that bad. The simplistic lyrics didn't bother me.
The first track is my fave pick. The whole vibe of the album clicked me. | |

05.25.24 | It's fascinating to see how we diverged on musical tastes over the years. Your first two lists of this series had a bunch of "classics" and "superbs" in my book, albums I know very well. Black Celebration would make it on at least a top 25 greatest albums of all time, if not a top 10. But I don't know ANYTHING from this list except Killswitch, and it's not this album that I'm familiar with.
Reminds me why I love this site! | Ladron93
05.26.24 | Yes, it is fascinating, kildare. I couldn't help with the "superb" albums in the 80s and 90s. DAF's Alles Ist Gut could absolutely ended up in my 80s list, but it didn't happen. Love it, though. 1981 had many wonderful albums that they were insurmountable to make it in my list. xD
I concur with Black Celebration. It's one of my top 10 albums that I love.
Welp, As Daylight Dies has some catchy songs. The singer growls and doesn't growl here and there, but it's accessible.
Speaking of 2006, I forgot adding Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet. xD It's a great ambient album.
Oh yeah. Sputnikmusic grew on me. | kildare
05.26.24 | "I forgot adding Tim Hecker" -- I love Sputnik but also wish we could reorganize lists after we've created them. Oh well, can't have everything | DadKungFu
05.26.24 | Points for being an eclectic bunch and committing to several (very) dark horses rather than the typical sput picks also first and possibly only time we see Gwen Stefani and Tim Hecker on the same list | Ladron93
05.26.24 | Thank you so much, DadKungFu. ^^ |
