Yooooo I'm goin on a trip to Japan in like a week and a half and I like to listen to bands that are from wherever I'm going. Mostly gonna be in Tokyo and Osaka (with a few day trips to close cities/the country mixed in), but any Japanese music is fine lol. We're staying at a beach house like an hour outside of Tokyo for half the trip so there's gonna be a lot of time on the train (and we gotta be like silent on the train apparently lol). Plus, train time to Kyoto and Kobe/Himeji/Naoshima/wherever we go. If any of y'all have been and have other recs of places to go or eat at or tips or whatever, I'll gladly take them too. I've done some pretty exhaustive research, but more info is never a bad thing. Thanks cutie pies. | 1 | | Fishmans Kuuchuu Camp

05.13.24 | you in kanagawa or chiba for the first leg of the trip?
shiina ringo - shouso strip (noisy af pop classics)
boat - listening suicidal (all of the rocks)
supercar - highvision (electronic/indie)
boris - heavy rocks (stnr mtl)
split end - deep love (shoegaze/power pop)
zutomayo - hisohisobanashi (indie pop - one of the templates for 2020s jpop)
date of birth - la lu la roo (shibuya kei/lounge/dream pop — probs the closest thing you'll get to a fishmans rec given how unique they are)
citrus - pits are the pits (noise pop)
ichiko aoba - 0 (folk)
yumi matsutoya - misslim (70s folk pop classic)
susumu hirasawa - kyuusai no gihou (art pop/new age) | suppatime
05.13.24 | Thanks guys! I've needed to get into boris for years. Excited to see these other ones. And Kanagawa, we found it was way cheaper and had more space (and showers) for the seven of us lol. Plus, the train is going to be an experience in itself. Basically going to be in between Enoshima and Hakone, so might hit one or both of those up as well. Pretty close to the mountains as well, so we're definitely getting a hike in at Takao or something too. | BookoftheFallen
05.13.24 | BORIS | JohnnyoftheWell
05.13.24 | oh nice lol, used to live nearish there (just the other side of hakone, in shizuoka) - would defs recommend enoshima for a cute daytrip, and hakone could fill multiple days if you wanted. good for hiking, esp if you kick off from owakudani (go up in a cable car with sulphur pits under your feet and start the trail from the top). iirc there's a cable car back down from hakone shrine, but i never went that far. takao is a pretty chill hike for great views and has hot springs at the bottom as a bonus, but the hills around kamakura are good too if that's more convenient.
atami is also maybe worth a trip if you go via yugawara - v quiet town, but the springs there are nice
assumed you hadn't heard any boris or they'd have been here - heavy rocks (og) is a pretty easy way in (beefy stoner riffs for days), but there are so many sides to boris that it can take a bit of foraging before you fw them. try some of their atmo stuff like flood or feedbacker if that's more your vibe (or amplifier worship if you just want hard sludge lol) | Calc
05.13.24 | Shugo Tokumaru is pretty darn nihon. but jizue and LITE are nice post rock with some life to them. | Hawks
05.13.24 | I'd say give Transcending Bizarre? a chance if u dig Sigh! Also just jam Sigh's whole discog it all ripz. | arthropod
05.13.24 | Revive by Nemophila. Metalcore mixed with hard rock, solos on all instruments if I hear correctly. | suppatime
05.14.24 | Uptempo post rock sounds like a sick soundtrack to Japan, excited to check that out. And yeah hawks, I honestly had completely forgotten about Sigh lol so this will be a good excuse to jam their shit. And sounds right up my alley arthropod.
and nice johnny! We're gonna be in Oiso. How was living in Shizuoka? Yeah, taking your thoughts into consideration, I think we're gonna do Hakone or maybe Kamakura instead of making the long trip to Takao. Atami looks awesome as well so hopefully we can fit that in somewhere, was thinking about Jogasaki Coast and the Kawazu waterfalls but I think that might be a little too far for a day trip. Thanks so much for the tips!
And yeah, I probably listened to something like Akuma no Uta a long time ago but just have never sat down and given them more than a cursory listen. I've gotten a lot more into stoner and sludge as I've gotten older so I'm excited. I can get down with any of those types of sounds so we'll see which ones I really fuck with lol. | Uzumaki
05.14.24 | Palm, which is like the only Japanese hardcore you need nowadays.
Heaven In Her Arms, to scratch that Envy itch
FACT, one of the best in Japan to ever do post-hardcore
Arise In Stability, which is like a Japanese version of BTBAM | frozencarl
05.14.24 | bro I also need to give Boris some more listens. Maximum the Hormone fucking owns dude prob my fave japanese band.
since you fw babymetal and Blood Stain Child (dont check their new shit), I'd say peep Clarity by Passcode.
you also gotta peep Intestine Baalism asap, theyre melodeath that is more death than melo which I know you fw. similar to them is Bereaved, I'd say check The Cries of the Penitent. vox are Darkest Hour-y while the riffs sound like Dismember's melodeath shit. think I mightve texted u about them
also check out Violent by Volcano. its like thrashy trad/power metal. really solid shit | jrlikestodance
05.14.24 | Hiromi - Another Mind. It's jazz! | suppatime
05.15.24 | yooo thanks uzumaki, all that shit sounds amazing and so up my alley.
lol barl, i didn't know if it was u or dante who had maximum the hormone in my searches but i was like damn this shit is fun lol. added all those jawnts to my playlist except couldn't find that volcano record on spotify... think i found it on youtube doe. intestine and bereaved sound dank af.
and thank jr! that'll be a nice break in the playlist after all the heavy stuff i just got rec'd lol. Just remembered Toshifumi Hinata and Ryuichi Sakamoto as well so we'll have some relaxing vibes too lol. I wanna say there's another big jazz or classical guy I'm forgetting but I can't remember for the life of me. | SteakByrnes
05.15.24 | Check out Fact self titled album
Also check Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas - Feeling of Unity | frozencarl

05.15.24 | ty steaky
and lol wtf i swear it wasn't when i searched but good looks | pyroflare77
05.15.24 | Anything Gonin-Ish. Extreme prog metal with prominent piano, sounds Japanese as fuck (I'm not smart enough with music theory to know what key or scale or whatever they're using to make that comparison click).
They're "similar" to Sigh I guess since everyone compares the two, but they have nothing in common besides being weird Japanese prog metal. I have a Sigh list that gives my thoughts on their discog, so hopefully one of those sounds up your alley, too.
Seconding Intestine Baalism, Hiromi, Boris.
Also Quest for Blood if you want gimmicky flute metal. | suppatime
05.16.24 | Quest for Blood and Gonin-Ish both sound dope and super Japanese hahah, sick. thank you. I'll peep your list! |
