Asterisk denotes great track
10Leatherwolf
Leatherwolf (1987)

Powerful heavy metal. Gang vocals on those first two tracks go hard. And yeah, there’s a hokey cover of Bad Moon Rising. It’s pure fun - the best way to describe this record.

The Calling, Rise Or Fall

9Warlock
Triumph and Agony

Yeah, it’s absolutely arena-chanting mainstream power metal, but Doro Pesch is a great vocalist, and the band knows how to get the blood pumping! All We Are is a fantastic opener, even with its word salad nonsense chorus, and the band can do fast AND slow well - Make Time For Love is a wonderfully ridiculous ballad.

I Rule The Ruins, Touch Of Evil, Make Time For Love, All We Are

Pleased To Meet Me

This is here for the melodic perfection of Alex Chilton + the last pair of songs are beautiful in their own right

*Alex Chilton, Skyway

6Fleetwood Mac
Tango in the Night

Took ‘em awhile, but Fleetwood Mac carve out a distinctly 80’s sound for themselves, and the chemistry between them all has them shining like stars. McVie often shines brightest - she does magic with her keyboards, and not a single one of her tracks is a dud. Elsewhere Stevie sings her heart out on Seven Wonders, and though Lindsey isn’t at his very best here, opener “Big Love” and the title track are solid.

Seven Wonders, Tango In The Night, *Little Lies, Isn't It Midnight, Everywhere

5Suzanne Vega
Solitude Standing

It has the two lesser versions of “Tom’s Diner”, but other than that, Vega’s soft voice delivers song after song of meaningful storytelling. It’s what she does best, exemplified on the heartbreaking “Luka”. That and the stretch of tracks 6 - 9 through nine feel like sheer brilliance.

Luka, *Solitude Standing, Language, Gypsy, Wooden Horse (Casper Hausers Song)

Secrets of the Beehive

A constant buzzing has a meditative quality to it - a beauty in every individual tone, every bee with its own vibrations. You just have to take your time, slow down, and those secrets will reveal themselves. Secrets of the Beehive only asks that you listen to the poetry pouring from the lips of its vocalist. Just listen, and the contemplation will come. Each word’s a piece of a puzzle - there’s a beauty in it.

Orpheus, When Poets Dreamed Of Angels, *Let The Happiness In

3Helloween
Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I

Quintessential power metal. Halloween is the definitive takeaway here (and a banger in any October playlist), but the rest of the album shreds as well, complimented excellently by the vocals of Kai Hansen. Just listen to the paces the band puts “I’m Alive” through for a microcosm of what this one’s all about.

*Halloween, I'm Alive

2Swans
Children of God

The earliest iteration of a cinematic Swans. Slow and brooding tracks steeped in religious lyricism are in line considering their previous works, but for the first time here Swans sounds beautiful, albeit unnerving at times. Jarboe’s the star of several tracks, her voice ethereal or foreboding depending on the tune. Sprawling in sound. Great album.

New Mind, In My Garden, Like A Drug (Sha La La La), Children Of God

4.5/5
1Prince
Sign o' the Times

I’m no Prince aficionado, but this has got to be some of his top tier stuff right? I’d only ever heard the title track from this before, and wasn’t quite sure what to expect going in. But the combination of funk, psychedelic, power-pop, r&b - even though it runs a little long, this is jam packed with earworms, grooves, and sultry stunners.

Sign o' the times, Starfish and Coffee, U Got The Look, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Strange Relationship, *I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
