In general
Football became big business and we imported the foreign method of rolling around on the floor acting a complete tart to get people booked.
Society became homogenous as fuck
Pub ‘culture’ started to get bought out and all that pub dining bollocks became a thing.

Social media, steroids and tattoos haven’t played a part in my life so that’s all fine
Pub culture in Aldershot took decades to catch up with London so don’t worry about my youth there, it was suitably scuzzy 🤣
In terms of music I disagree. Things were iconic, you just didn’t like them because you weren’t on that culture wave. I was a part of the MySpace music boom where my band could suddenly get gigs in London supporting big bands because we had decent tracks and following online - it was awesome. |

Arctic Monkeys were the ones where the internet played a key role in building the mystique but there was undoubtedly something missing. Something I can’t quite put my finger on just seemed incredibly forced. “This is the future and you WILL enjoy it!!”
The Strokes and the ‘garage band’ revival of 2000-2003 was probably the last remnants of how things were but even then there was something missing. There was more superficiality flying about.
Then there’s the festivals. What were mass gatherings of relatively normal people all with a shared purpose just turned into sponsored events attended by credit card waving bunch of complete wankers.

10.11.23 | I think the addictive community elements of MySpace got perfected by Facebook and Instagram and unfortunately the incredible music sharing platform became extinct because the listeners all jumped ship because the social media elements were outdated
I think MySpace was pivotal in bringing metalcore and extreme metal to the masses where it just wasn’t before. Everybody at my college knew who Whitechapel, JFAC and BMTH were and a lot of those kids then expanded their horizons and got into more credible stuff shortly after
I went to loads of festivals, multiple Downloads, Sonisphere and Reading and it was definitely not commercialised at that point, it was raw af - kids living in their own filth and starting the day with beers and shots 🤣 |

Also would agree that the 00s festivals I attended were filthy, wild and fantastic (Download, Leeds, Sonisphere, T in the Park) and I certainly had no credit card. Barely ate for those weekends so I could spend the pittance I had on cigarettes and alcohol.
That said, I appreciate that I've no concept of what the 90s festivals that Zak experienced were like. |

Thanks Pika - yeah Wildhearts are chronically underrated. So many great songs with huge choruses and it’s not from that album but Caffeine Bomb is still one of my favourite quick adrenaline hit songs! |
