| Gimme Rec (Singular) Pls
I am requesting one singular rec (per person) for me to listen and I’ll do something with it. I’ll write something, give a rating, maybe even do a track-by-track (prob not). I’ll try to listen to an album per day or two days but we’ll see. Will give a review if I can (if it's rock or pop music, I tend to have things to say; if it isn't, well it's harder for me).
It can be anything, but ideally it’s something that you think I might like. If you give me something like metal or post-rock and you’re not one of like 5 users, idk I might have to ignore you.
List is digs. I’ll add other people’s stuff later. | 1 | | The Exit Bags Our Sun Will Clean Its Holy Wounds | 2 | | The Weeknd Thursday | 3 | | Vladislav Delay Anima | 4 | | Zach Bryan Zach Bryan | 5 | | Magnolia Electric Co Magnolia Electric Co | 6 | | Bad Bunny Un Verano Sin Ti | 7 | | Mojave 3 Ask Me Tomorrow | 8 | | Antena Camino Del Sol | 9 | | Junior Kimbrough First Recordings | 10 | | Madrugada Industrial Silence | 11 | | Slapp Happy Slapp Happy | 12 | | Adam F Colours | 13 | | Defeated Sanity The Sanguinary Impetus | 14 | | Black Eyes Black Eyes | 15 | | AnD Cosmic Microwave Background | 16 | | Michael Jackson Thriller
[YoYoMancuso] Already had this rated but it has been a good while since the last I peeped so I figured why not. Michael seems like he has two moods in this album: the stuntin' on us (the singles) kind vs the smooth, crooning kind (basically the rest). While I still question the songwriting in some moments, I find that I appreciate the deep cuts on here a bit more than before. Deserve a bump tbh. 3.4/5 | 17 | | Lhasa de Sela La Llorona
[rabidfish] Wow, what a voice. Reminds me a bit of hypnotic trip-hop/downtempo but without any electronics, all bare-bones folk instrumentation (although, that just might be the 90s-ness of it). A curious mix of Mexican folk and European jazz. Don't have too much to say here as it kinda seems a bit out of my depth. Regardless, it was captivating the whole way through, but the momentum slows down later on. 3.7/5 | 18 | | The Cramps Songs the Lord Taught Us
[SomeCallMeTim] I've already heard some Cramps songs before and wasn't super impressed with those I heard. TV Set is such a baller opener with a very classic sound but with contemporary production. Wearing shades indoors and or after dark is an oddly repeated topic that has come up in my life, so that song is very amusing and a banger as well. The real showstopper is Teenage Werewolf by far. As if pullin' up to the saloon with a savage, shifty, sauntering swagger - an anything-goes type of night. But as with my previous experiences with the subgenre, I just don't particularly find the punk and other more modern elements in psychobilly all that compelling compared to 50s/60s rock n' roll. Standout songs or singles abound, but I can't see myself being crazy about a whole album's worth of it. I like this album best when it most heavily leans into classic rock n' roll, surf, or even blues sounds. Wasn't crazy about most of the rest but I'm pretty glad to have heard this anyhow. 3.0/5 | 19 | | Lepra (USA-ME) Devil's Blood in Her Tongue
[Hawks] This is a very interesting listen. It feels very elaborately and, more importantly, deliberately constructed. As if there's an ongoing story behind it akin to a concept album - complete with instrumental interludes, a "pop" song somewhere along the way, and the way the album ends the same as it begins. The pop song in question is a banger btw, very much in line with The Cure goth rock. This is good stuff, both by the books when it comes to goth metal and does a few things differently to keep things interesting. I'm not super crazy about this, I could see myself enjoying it more later on. 3.2/5 | 20 | | Porcupine Tree Stupid Dream
The opener is interesting because it's a mix of classic 70s prog and 90s alt rock in a way that isn't obnoxious but somehow sorta plodding? Like it has a decent backbone but the song trudges along that overstays its welcome. The next songs are sorta fun, straightforward britpop songs, which I wasn't expecting. I very much appreciate the pop sensibilities and how it seems to take itself less serious, but britpop as a whole has never sat right with me for some reason or another. One of the songs sounds like a straight up Radiohead song (good thing), just not an amazing Radiohead song. The closer was a pretty good reprisal, I'm kinda a sucker for that sorta thing. Didn't really dislike this, but yeah, nothing crazy. If someone wanted me to listen to a Porcupine Tree album, I can definitely see this being the best choice. 2.7/5 | 21 | | The Flatlanders More A Legend Than A Band
Very rich and surprisingly "full" production sound, like they recorded a little too close to the mic in a smaller room. There's a recurring strange sound that pervades the record, and I found out it's a musical saw lmao. A feel-good listen: seemingly carefree and sunny vibe, but not quite a lazy one. Making each (relatively short) song distinct from each other does not seem to be a priority. But it is very easy to float into this laid-back crooning style. While it rarely strays from this, the closer is a bit more hectic like a hoedown. 3.4/5 | 22 | | Slug The Out Sound
Sometimes listening to modern noise rock albums feels like a pointless exercise, as I always get the feeling that some experimental rock or phxc band from the 90s just did it better. This is one of those albums that confirms that feeling. That interlude song was annoying af on the first half, but the second half was pure ambient bliss. I like the show of restraint and nuance; not being afraid to say 'We can be quiet, if we wanted to be, we just don't want to.' I don't know if I'm imagining things, but I'm getting a rustic, lo-fi indie feel underneath the feedback on this. Like, I can see it being almost directly influenced by Pavement and Pixies, etc. 3.3/5 | 23 | | Willie Nelson Red Headed Stranger
I lost what I had written down for this so there's no other choice but to listen to this again (again) to find the words (again). 3.4/5 | 24 | | Rei Harakami わすれもの
Genuinely at a loss as to how much I like this, but I do think that the opener is basically perfect indietronic music. | 25 | | These New South Whales TNSW
I have to start by saying that I'm not fond of the vocals, but the opener is quite interesting regardless. Relatively by the numbers post-punk (the trve revival 2010s style) but with noticeably heavier post-hardcore guitars and drumming - this pattern seems to be the defining key of this album. Strictly speaking, this is better than every other band in that same little space that I've lumped them into. There's an effortlessness and earnestness that I always admire behind the music and I greatly appreciate how it somehow manages to not pigeon hole itself into either indie post-punk revival or the trve post-punk revival scenes. This takes the more straightforward punky elements of alt/indie rock movements of last few decades, which is a welcome shift in strategy. 2.9/5 | 26 | | Oxbow The Narcotic Story
2.6/5; thoughts in the thread below. | 27 | | Cerberus Shoal Homb
Whirring cacophony alongside warm fuzzy synths is an easy way to reel me in. Reminds me of when I would listen to radio static of oscillating quality on long drives at night. The second song is a slow burn with a measured progression and a variety of influences that remind me of the slowest, proggiest moments of some screamo albums. The fuzzy synths make a return to wash over me like the degaussing of old CRT monitors. I Didn’t love how the payoff for the 3rd track is the literal 4th track but at least that track ripz so I can't be too mad. Listening to stuff like this is kinda annoying because it makes me have to consider that I probably do actually like post-rock x_x 3.6/5 | |

11.15.23 | "Making each (relatively short) song distinct from each other does not seem to be a priority."
hmm maybe, but Go Downtown specifically is one of the best songs ever made
"Cyg, your taste is such a hard read"
feel like i've seen this comment many times but i've never understood the narrative... i'd say his taste is consistent! | Cygnatti
11.16.23 | "feel like i've seen this comment many times but i've never understood the narrative... i'd say his taste is consistent!"
I personally agree! Perhaps, I should blame the poor sput tagging system for make things seem more random than they are.
"hmm maybe, but Go Downtown specifically is one of the best songs ever made"
Funny you mention this song because I came across a slightly more reverby/dreamy (but unfortunately much louder tho) version of it... and well I think I like it even more. :X | Mort.
11.16.23 | i see you listened to the narcotic story. would be interested in hearing your thoughts | Cygnatti
11.16.23 | @foxxxy, I'm really happy to have heard that Slug piece. Has got me revisiting some more noise rock/phxc and when I come across only the good shit it's like, wow this is the best genre ever. | Ryus
11.16.23 | glad you liked red headed stranger | Cygnatti
11.16.23 | I did not enjoy Narcotic Story, but I do get the feeling that I am being unfair to it in a way. I had already heard of the album and decided to read a review of it; I don't always read reviews for things I haven't heard yet, but if it's a big name and well-established, I'm more inclined to do so. The genre tags and reviews painted an album that I did not hear, and I was disappointed.
While that is my own fault, ultimately, however, the music and vocals did not really interest me or move me. In those respects, it reminded me a lot of the more droll "angsty" alt rock bands of the 90s and 2000s that I often really don't care for. I listened to it twice and came out of it with not a lot to say, which is abnormal for me when it comes to describing just rock music. | Mort.
11.16.23 | 'ultimately, however, the music and vocals did not really interest me or move me'
absolutely fair and often what it simply comes down to.
the vocals are definitely a make or break when it comes to oxbow |
