09.23.23 | After several years bitching about the production of these two albums, here are my own edits:

09.23.23 | i love 7 as is but cool hopefully your thing is good and it helps other people enjoy 7 too thanks |

09.23.23 | I've wanted to check them out for a while. What is different on your edits? |
ConcubinaryCode
09.23.23 | Really good ranking, I might have to check out your edits to see if it would really affect putting purple that high but outside the production job I didn't even find G&G pretty compelling in the first place. Stone either but maybe it needs more time to grow. |

09.23.23 | @mryrtmrnfoxxxy G&G is a solid 3.5 for me with the edits, so it's still a good release ruined by terrible production imo
@artiswar The originals (as you might have read somewhere) are compressed and brickwalled/saturated to death. There's actual clipping in those albums and a lot of the nuances and effects are lost in the mix. So I got rid of the layers of noise by using manual hiss removal tools, and also removing low continuous frequencies in the case of G&G. For Purple, I found the saturation came from (mostly) buzzing background noise, so I had to manually decrease hum levels to at least 15% or so plus a bit of hiss removal. Just enough so I didn't alter the album's sound significantly. Pretty happy with the results. Both sound great, but Purple sounds better because the mixes weren't as compressed as with G&G.
@ConcubinaryCode Thanks, man! Give them a shot and tell me what you think. |

09.23.23 | The production of Blue is what drew me to this band in the first place. Every kick hit sounds like a cannon recorded in an airplane hangar. |
JDubb
09.23.23 | I was generally OK with Purple's mix - and always thought Purple was an awesome album. But C&G was an absolutely horrible mix - its hard to tell what's underneath the noise. Will have to take a listen to your take on these! |
bananatossing
09.23.23 | @CugnoBrasso Interesting take haha
I still think Blue would benefit with Red's production, but I don't hate it. The music more than makes up for a muddled mix and all instruments are fairly audible.
@JDubb For point of reference compare my edits of "I'm Already Gone" (specially towards the end of the song), "Broken Halo" (the original is totally unlistenable) from G&G or "Desperation Burns" from Purple with the originals for you to see what my intention was. It's essentially the same mix, just that the different instruments and effects have more clarity and are easily discernable, plus less clipping/brickwalling. |

09.23.23 | 6 2 3 8 4 5 7 1 for me
Gonna have to check those fan edits! |
JDubb
09.23.23 | Checked out the C&G edits - its subtle (as you noted, no change to the mix) - but makes a huge difference in tone and clarity. Nice work with this! Will check out the Purple mixes soon too. |

09.23.23 | ^Thanks for getting back to me and taking the time to listen. I'm glad you enjoyed! |

09.23.23 | 7 is awesome |
bananatossing
09.23.23 | @Kompys2000 It seems we agree on 3 of these lol
Great work on Stone, btw! Let me know what you think of the edits (:
@chemicalmarriage I can see the appeal, but it gets too slow halfway through for me. |
BlazinBlitzer
09.23.23 | I haven't heard First and Second, but Red is indeed the best of their LPs. |
mryrtmrnfoxxxy
09.24.23 | you will like first and second |

09.24.23 | Yesss m/
If you like early Mastodon then First & Second will be up your alley. |
Kompys2000
09.24.23 | Having only heard part of Morningstar and throw me an anchor/I'd do anything Id say these are a small but notable improvement, for gold and grey I think it sort of highlights some more far reaching issues with the layering and mixing that sadly would probably be impossible to "fix" without access to the original stem recordings or just a crazy level of finesse/time to kill |
bananatossing
09.24.23 | That's exactly right. The available mix of Purple at least sounds good without the unnecessary layers of noise, where G&G still sounds pretty rough. It's at least listenable to me now, but there's no way of fixing it unless they dig up the tape recordings and remix the whole thing. |
onionbubs
09.24.23 | yellow and green are my favorites lol but this is like a 3.5 tier band for me generally |
CugnoBrasso
09.24.23 | Crazy take I know, but that's exactly how it was for me. If Blue wasn't produced the way it was, it would probably have flown under my radar. Its silly production choices made it stand out. |
bananatossing
09.24.23 | @onionbubs I averaged my ratings for this band and got a 3.6. It's odd, I never rate them too high and yet I keep coming back to their stuff for whatever reason. I guess they are a case of being a very interesting band but also very inconsistent. |
PotsyTater
09.24.23 | Production on blue is fine and having purple above it is inexcusable under any circumstance |
Kompys2000
09.24.23 | Yeah cugno I really like their albums with John Congleton. He brought a unique sense of spaciousness balanced with immediacy to blue yellow and green. Red is my fave production wise though, such a massive vibrant guitar sound on that one |
bananatossing
09.24.23 | @PotsyTater I admit I'm totally biased because I'm listening to my own edit. It surprised me I liked the album after doing so because it used to rank below Yellow for me.
@Kompys2000 I think Blue is a bit jarring when listening right after Red because it's sounds so different. But I always found John Congleton work on Y&G perfectly fine. Those two records aren't my favorite but at least they got a very interesting soundscapes and tone. |
DungeonBoy
09.24.23 | ah, my people. 1 is 1, 2 is 2, and yeah the Baroness songs on the Unpersons split rules. 4 is probably 3 for me, but yeah Purple is a great record. |

09.24.23 | yesss m/
Good to see some love for the Unpersons split songs ("Cavite" is jaw dropping). Blue and Purple are interchangeable now that is listenable to me lol |

10.21.23 | Finally had a chance to listen to your C&G edit/remaster with headphones on. Got misty eyed - was able to hear small nuances in the tracks for the first time ever. And not just some wall of fuzz/noise. It was an enjoyable listen for the first time. Great job!!!! |

10.21.23 | Would love to hear your edit of Metallica - Death Magnetic. Haven’t yet heard a satisfactory version of that yet… |

10.21.23 | Nice to see Purple getting the credit it deserves. |
