twlight: Starfield Thread (no spoilers)

twlight 09.16.23	Yeah es6 is going to be Skyrim 2. I wouldbt expect too much innovation from Bethesda. They found a formula that works and will stick to it

All the new stuff they added like space combat I'm not really liking from this and all the rest of the gameplay doesn't really stand out from FO4. It's crazy cuz from morrowind to oblivion to skyrim all feel vastly different and I can't see their new games as anything but incremental because they're taking forever to make games now too.

Piglet 09.17.23	ME think game gud. categorically fails as an rpg in the most predictable bethesda ways, but it still functions as a looter shooter just fine. you can easily suckle out a couple odd hundred hours by just pottering around in the various algorithmic permutations of geological gunk, repainted fallout 4 assets and gormless dinosaurs. my biggest criticism is how they doubled down on making the world feel like a bland milquetoast corporate shell, from the voice actors to the writing to the assets. and then they'll try to shoehorn in red dead elements in a place like akila city, making it absurdly brown and dusty, and yet the cloying corporatism will still be implicated in all the characters. the whole game just feels like a mirror being held up to the impossibly boring lives of project managers at bethesda, punctuated by the odd interesting premise they probably stole from star trek. they may as well hire a bunch of lumberjacks or siberian fishermen to do the writing and voice acting, because at least they can shit out some semblance of grubby reality, or sum cultural trappings. a place like atlantis city is so devoid of culture, it makes you feel like you're trapezing around a shopping mall
teamster 09.17.23	I’m cranky this morning so I’m gonna talk about what I don’t like: - worst in game map ever. - finding dead bodies all over the place because I haven’t initiated their quest yet. - the UI is sucks. I hate the way things are categorized. - your actual movement animation is awful. Bethesda still hasn’t gotten that right. - contraband items make absolutely no difference. Waiting for Starfield Nexus to heat up so I can fix the sins this game has.
PitchforkArms 09.19.23	I am enjoying it A LOT. Even with the legit criticism of not being able to fly around in atmosphere or through atmosphere to space, the grandiosity does feel pretty magical. When you travel to a star system and discover a small unique settlement (Hopetown, Paradiso, etc) it just feels so novel and the threads that tie into the lore that they built are great. I'm near 75hrs played and have only just gotten to where the main questline gets a little bonkers (I like it). The faction quests are all pretty interesting, too. The worldbuilding is great - the very first thing to do is start with the first UC mission because it frames the world so well. Gah. I like it v much
MillionDead 09.19.23	I’m feeling 7/10 so far. Like, I want them to innovate but they’re gonna put out what they can get away with. The dialogue can be good depending on the character. The planet exploration/surveying is incredibly boring. I hate how the perks are so many quality of life improvements that you wish were just there from the get go. Like they know how tedious the game is and your unlocks make it incrementally less so. They throw so many quest at you every two steps you take but rarely are they particularly deep, amounting to little more than chores for fluff and a couple thousand credits. The gunplay feels great for Bethesda. Some of the quests are decently interesting. I hate how the persuasion minigame is little more than nonsense. I think the writing across the board could be stronger for sure.

MillionDead 09.19.23	I mean, I have my persuasion maxed out, so it's easy. But when you read the lines, they rarely have any material referencing the actual context of the situation, just generic lines that have little or nothing to do with what's going on. Those 2000s bioware games were like the kings of dialogue. Anyways, it also freezes at least a couple times per play sesh for me, among tons of other minor glitches. It definitely has that familiar Bethesda jank. I wonder if they're gonna keep using this engine literally forever.
Gameofmetal 09.19.23	Funny that you compliment the visuals here with the comparison to Fallout 4, I really like how Fallout 4 looks aside from npc faces while Starfield has seemed extremely aesthetically dull to me from what I've seen. Will probably play it in a few weeks.

I've actually heard a term for this called "skill parring" as in giving you perks and bonuses that equate to how your character should feel at the beginning or at least semi early in the game. This isn't the only game that does it but the perks are very uncreative even compared to fallout 3 where most the perks just boost your skills. I like that you can literally hear rumors and follow leads to start quests more but a lot of them are just bs fetch quests. I did the one where one guy wanted a fork back or some shit and made you make a trade on his behalf for whatever reason and you get to the guy and he just makes the trade without any fight and I can't help but feel like I got scammed out of time. Also idk how people feel about the encumbrance, but it's just as bad in this game. I'm glad they got rid of the stupid degradation but they could've gotten rid of that bs too. At least have it be like dark souls where you can pick everything up but what you equip is what encumbered you. The system has been long past outdated.
