Records That Changed Heavy Music

Some musings
1Deafheaven
Sunbather

I was deep into heavy music throughout the 00s and early 10s, and it seemed like every six to twelve months there was a landmark record released
2Nails
Unsilent Death

It was almost taken for granted that records that spearheaded a nascent subgenre, scene or production aesthetic were put out regularly
3TesseracT
One

I mean hell, in the space of a couple of years, we had the genesis of blackgaze, djent and falsegrind, and at least two of those microgenres and their associated production aesthetics are still chugging along like it’s 2013
4Korn
Korn

In a discussion with a mate today, we were talking about records that had a widespread, profound impact on heavy music, and neither of us really had any examples from the last five or ten years
5Blood Incantation
Hidden History of the Human Race

I mean, there are still creative, innovative bands like Blood Incantation, Lingua Ignota, Loathe or Code Orange putting out fresh sounding records
6Loathe (UK)
I Let It In And It Took Everything

But the impact of those records seems to be limited to their respective subgenres themselves, instead of spearheading a new subgenre or production aesthetic or having a wider impact across heavy music itself
7Sleep Token
Take Me Back to Eden

Maybe I’m just old and out of touch, and don’t know what’s hot any more. Maybe six months from now the world will be awash with Sleep Token clones reinvigorating heavy music
8Killswitch Engage
The End of Heartache

But I really just can’t think of a record that had the level of impact a record like Sunbather was once able to
9Fear Factory
Demanufacture

Either way, I’m keen to hear some other perspectives on this
