04.13.23 | Nah dude don't feel that way. i still got one more year left but i'll be in a pretty similar situation to you. i think the mass majority of people are. what sucks for me is that i'll have to sit out a full year to go to grad school anyways, so i have no idea what i'm supposed to do for the one year off. but i also might lose where i live when i graduate from this college, and any grad school i go to will likely be literally a thousand miles from where i live now. not looking forward to any of that. but, i know i'll get it figured out, and so will you. your degree is pretty strong. |

04.13.23 | 20k of debt is really not bad comparatively, not trying to minimize it, but it could be a lot worse. best of luck to ya, you'll b fine : ) |

04.13.23 | dang this reaching out thing really does work, I was busy catastrophizing the whole day, thanks guys!
@sonoma I’m sorry to hear that man, any chance you can find a decent entry level job to fill in that year? I’d talk to the career advisors, I’ll probably do that myself and hope it works lol
@normal - naw please go ahead minimize it lol, im just sad because I’m the youngest of 7 and 5 of my siblings are doctors but they all studied abroad so it was way cheaper and took less time, and I’m the only one having to do it the hard way (the US) without a genuine passion for the hard world of medicine. oh well, hopefully the break will give me time to reflect and get my lazy ass motivated again |

04.13.23 | Strike out on your own. Get a place to rent even if you’re unsure of the future. Find out who you are and what you want. I’m 28 and I only just figured out what I want to do last year.
But since I didn’t commit to anything and I have no debt, I’m free to put all my time and effort into preparing myself. Don’t lock yourself into something cause you feel like you have to. Yeah sure you have some debt but that’s not too bad at, what 22? Better to take the long way to get to where you wanna go than take a shortcut to your own personal hell.
Seems to be working for me. Good luck dude/dudette 👍 |

04.13.23 | Do you like Biology? Do you want to go to Med school? You could get a job as a Research Assistant at a lab in a medical school. Pay isn't great (about $40K, but benefits are good) , but it would help you work out if you like that line of work, and also connect you with doctors to do some shadowing (to see if medicine is for you).
I run a research lab in a big West Coast medical school. I've mentored over a dozen people, some of whom were in your position of uncertainty. Some were close to 30 and still not in med or grad school. All my mentees have ultimately gone onto med school or PhD programs. A Bio PhD is tuition-free and you get a stipend, and is a good stepping stone to other science/medicine-related careers too (most PhDs don't end up running their own lab).
If you hate science, ignore me and become a plumber or some other trade like Borracho said.

04.13.23 | being a college student means still having some kind of hopefulness about having a fulfilling processional life. but honestly dude, you don't have to force yourself to be passionate about work. Just find something you can grit your teeth and bear with it, hopefully you can make some decent money. Or go to med school and feel out what kind of field you would hate the least. Contrary to what many people might tell you, career doesn't have to be what your life revolves around. If you just choose happiness, that might mean not taking your education and career to the next level, but only you know the answer. |

04.13.23 | don't know what your home situation is like, but i'd recommend living at home as long as you can after college, or at least until you've paid down your debt. even if your parents start charging you rent it will be a small fraction of what you'd pay an actual landlord. the social drawbacks of that are vastly outweighed by the financial benefits.
i graduated last spring, got a full time job while living at home, and probably would've been able to pay off 20k in debt roughly six months into the job (i didn't actually have debt personally). 20k is not as crippling as it may seem once you start really working. |

04.13.23 | God I wish i was only 20K in college debt lol |

04.13.23 | Biology is fucking cool you sound like a lil bitch, fr.
edit: clarification, i just don't get how you can study something for 4-5 years and not get something out of it. Like, learning new things is... cool in and of itself. Everything else is an extra in my eyes, it's just pleasurable enough to get to learn about life and stuff with other people. |

04.13.23 | The debt is the kicker, really. Took me over a decade to get my master’s (biochem), because I’d work three jobs in between a year of school here and there, so I could pay for it myself. Now I just work for myself in a field only laterally related to my degree |

04.13.23 | i feel u about the debt fam. i went to my dream school but as a result accrued a good chunk of debt. luckily some scholarships helped but i felt trapped. now that i have a job in the field i went to school for i finally feel like i can breathe a bit. im sure youll feel the same way bro. u got this |

04.13.23 | "it's just pleasurable enough to get to learn about life and stuff with other people."
covid took away roughly 1.5 years of in-person classes (probably half the freshman and all of flash's sophomore year), and zoom classes have dramatically increased since then. unless you're a social butterfly living on campus nobody really got that kind of experience these past few years (or at least anywhere near to the extent pre-covid graduates did). chances are dude prob didn't even have to get out of bed to attend the majority of his classes. shit was beyond depressing. |

04.13.23 | Graduating from college soon as well (2D/3D Animation), though I can relate to the sentiments. It can be a mental hurdle to get across and it feels like it appears to be a light switch after you graduate, though I'm sure you'll get through it with time. Definitely would suggest living at home as long as you can if the opportunity arises. |

04.13.23 | Fr Alex I have so much sympathy for those that went to school during Covid. Having a job the only “drawback” was working from home which was awesome.
Bra if you’re not interested in going to med school/being a doctor, then don’t do it. Use your degree to get a job that is flexible with good benefits. I went to school for engineering because it seemed like a financially good decision and I hate every day I go to work. Would much rather get paid half and work from home or just do what I like such as psychology or obviously music although I know that one’s kinda unrealistic |

04.13.23 | college during covid sucked very hard confirmed |
rabidfish
04.13.23 | yea, i didn't take that into consideration lol. I did my masters during covid but that was already going to be online-only. Going to school and taking clases can be a bitch but you can't really replace that experience with anything else. It's just envigorating for the mind and soul. Even with all the shitty, sleazy or downright bad people you could meet, it's still worth it (imo). |
Ryus
04.13.23 | yeah i really wish i could do a masters just to learn but it makes no sense for me at this point in my career/financial position. maybe someday ;_; |
rabidfish
04.13.23 | @ryus one of the few good things that COVID brought about is that now there's like... a bunch more options for master degrees that don't require to be physically present. have you considered other countries with more afforable higher education? it's actually much more doable now that 3 years ago. |

04.13.23 | private college n only 20k debt wtf |

04.13.23 | ive def considered it, but im in a field where i really dont need anything more than a bachelors degree and it doesnt really make financial sense for me to step away from my job for various reasons. hopefully in a few when i have fewer debts ill feel comfortable taking a break but rn, i couldnt do it. |

04.13.23 | 20k honestly doesn't sound that bad tbh. I had 7k for a semester of culinary school. Idk how old you are but chances are your life is just starting and you don't need to follow what your parents say obv and you can mark your own niche. But honestly if you have a degree you might as well try to make the most of it but don't feel defeated if you can't. I think a majority of people that hold degrees are in fields that don't relate to their majors. Such is life. |
