03.10.23 | always hyped for new Zelda. I don't know why people are worried. first party nintendo games never disappoint |
Eakflanderyof
03.10.23 | I really enjoyed BOTW. Became one of my favorites, possibly even favorite zelda game. New one looks cool so I'm hyped |
ArsMoriendi
03.10.23 | Can't wait, BotW was great, so TofK should be great, right? |
Colton
03.10.23 | it seems like reusing assets from BOTW gave them more freedom to add new mechanics, which is exciting imo. hoping for more traditional dungeons as well. the divine beasts weren't great |
ArsMoriendi
03.10.23 | I don't mind reused assets at all, as long as it's not like copied maps or something |
Uzumaki
03.10.23 | Can’t wait for it |
Larkinhill
03.10.23 | Definitely hyped baby! |
InFiction
03.10.23 | Even if it's more BOTW It'll be great. Currently playing through Skyward Sword on Switch in preparation. |
Trebor.
03.11.23 | I buy one full price game a year and it'll probably be this one. Gonna have to dust off my switch tho. Would kill for them to put these fuckers on PC |
Gyromania
03.11.23 | I think BotW was great but it has some glaring issues - primarily lack of trademark Zelda dungeons and fun bosses. And as fun as the game was, it was a bit fatiguing. TotK looks a lot like BotW 1.5. I'm not nearly as hyped for it as I am other games like Pikmin 4, SH2 Remake, SHf, SIlksong, Elden Ring DLC. |
CygnusX1
03.11.23 | I'm hyped. Love that it looks like botw but with an updated map and more mechanics. The verticality is very welcomed. Can't wait to fly a janky homemade platform with rotors into a cliff and die |
Mongi123
03.11.23 | It’s probably gonna be as overrated as BOTW. That’s all I’ll say, hate me for it. |
WatchItExplode
03.11.23 | At one point I would have considered Zelda my favorite gaming property. I enjoyed breath of the wild but honestly haven't finished it despite putting plenty of hours into it. I think wind waker is the pinnacle of Zelda games the new ones are a bit extra |
Colton
03.11.23 | I actually never finished BOTW either which is kinda crazy cause I played it a lot. mostly just climb up mountains and then jump off of them and shit |
PotsyTater
03.11.23 | Bet mongi thinks Witcher 3 is the pinnacle of open world experience |
kevbogz
03.11.23 | im watching my gf replay botw w/ me doing all the big fights and it's p dang good, but do wish there were more boss fights n such. the metal beast things are cool but some more shadow of the colossus type fights would be sick (ive never played a zelda game) |
kevbogz
03.11.23 | like i was hard stuck on the minotaur thing by the water people place for maybe a good hour and it was some of the most satisfying gameplay ive had in a while |
PunkerBlast
03.11.23 | More just interested than hyped. I have BotW for the Wii U but I never played it as much as I intended. I got it from a friend discounted but it was during a very stressful time in my life so I didn't feel like trying to figure out puzzles though the open world idea did intrigue me. |
PotsyTater
03.11.23 | I have been optimistic about the game even after the somewhat underwhelming second trailer that pretty much just showed lots of recycled enemies and like a couple expanded mechanics. I have a friend who is feeling full doomer about it though and his rationale is that botw already pretty much pushed the limits of the underpowered switch and that was at the beginning of its life cycle, so seeing the second trailer with so little in the way of non-recycled content, he’s afraid that adding so much new stuff in the sky on top of the already existing map they will be forced to make a lot of compromises and the original map will be even more barren then it was in the first game. I see his point but Zelda hasn’t ever really let me down (aside from skyward sword being not that great) so ima just be stoked and wait til it comes out. |
Colton
03.11.23 | well BOTW was also held back by it having to run on the Wii U |
Colton
03.11.23 | not to mention it's 6 years later, developers learn how to optimize their hardware over time |
PunkerBlast
03.11.23 | Not so hot take, but the Wii U gamepad was gimped/made less useful to make it seem like the Switch release wasn't missing some nice features exclusive to that system. I think some days I should try it again, but I guess I just moved on. I still like the Wii U that I bought in a summer sale at Best Buy even though it was a failure of a system. It was the first Nintendo system I bought since the N64 and that was second hand. (I had a Gamecube briefly second hand but I flipped that quickly just ehh)
I know this is making it more about me, but two of my friends saw the Wii U I bought. And they both one especially after seeing Mario Kart 8 haha which I got on sale one day. I never got a Switch though obvs I thought about it. Glad it's successful. |
PotsyTater
03.11.23 | Good points |
Colton
03.11.23 | I don't think the Wii U was gimped so the switch would be more successful down the road. I think they just didn't have the technology for the switch fully ready yet but they had to make a new console because the Wii just wasn't gonna cut it, even in the early 2010s it just wasn't powerful enough. but if they had the ability to make the switch back when the wii u came out (or some kind of fully portable console that can also hook up to a TV) they would have |
PunkerBlast
03.11.23 | Colton, what I meant is the Wii U tablet was supposed to be used a lot more in the Wii U version for like short cut menus and selecting items, but since the Switch didn't have a second screen they disabled features like that in the Wii U version. I'm not upset or trying to make a scene. Nintendo promised the game would come out still on the Wii U and it did heh. Since both had the gyroscopic features that's about the same.
The Wii U was pretty sweet though too bad most of the technology went into the tablet. The actual hardware was underpowered for the generation and well that tablet was a main feature. Watch Dogs somehow came out on the Wii U iirc lmao. |
Colton
03.11.23 | oh my bad i thought you meant the release of the switch in general not the switch version of BOTW |
PunkerBlast
03.11.23 | Yeah I didn't make it entirely clear when I read what you responded to. What you posted afterwards is still on point though. |
PotsyTater
03.11.23 | If the sky stuff is going to be the major focus of the new game I don’t really need a whole lot from the ground map in terms of questing and exploring tbh. I don’t really want to feel obligated to traverse the same map all over again in the same capacity. What I hope of the ground map in the new one is more atmospheric stuff. I’d like the focus to be on like seeing land marks from the original game just completely decimated. Just getting to go stare into the void of what used to be one of the villages etc. I hope all the npc’s are miserable and the settlements are over run with monsters. I want to find beetle cowering in a corner while bokoblins ransack the place. I hope that kind of stuff sets a tone and the expansions are focused on subterranean and sky stuff and fingers crossed for traditional temples |
Mongi123
03.11.23 | Jokes on you potsy I’ve never played Witcher 3 |
PotsyTater
03.11.23 | Im surprised 99% of all botw haters I’ve talked to think Witcher 3 is the greatest game ever made |
nol
03.11.23 | No way it won’t be good, but there’s a few things I’m hoping for. Shrines are cool, but I could see a BOTW type game being fun with a different exploration emphasis if that makes sense. I want weapons to be more durable, but have there be less total weapons available to balance that out. Would make gaining new weapons feel more specialz. I’d also like more variety in enemy types, and just a bit more variety in general. |
PotsyTater
03.11.23 | What is your fav open world game mongi |
PunkerBlast
03.11.23 | I'm not mongi. But Morrowind is freaking sweet. |
Mongi123
03.11.23 | Honestly at this point, if it even counts in the traditional sense, Elden Ring.
To be clear, I don’t hate BOTW. I just don’t think it’s gods personal gift like a lot of people seem to think it is. |
PotsyTater
03.11.23 | Ugh that was the only answer you could have given where I can’t talk shit
Elden Ring and botw are the two best |
PunkerBlast
03.11.23 | Elden Ring is as much of a rpg as Zelda is oh wait heh The first Legend of Zelda was open world. I do see Breath of a Wild as an extension of that except with weapons that break. |
nol
03.11.23 | think about how long it took hylian’s to craft your blade only for you to break it in two bonks. Irresponsible link |
Eakflanderyof
03.11.23 | "To be clear, I don’t hate BOTW. I just don’t think it’s gods personal gift like a lot of people seem to think it is."
I really don't see people saying it is. It's pretty rare that i even see people saying it's one of their favorite zelda games. The most common thing i see is people bitching about the lack of dungeons and the world being too empty |
Colton
03.11.23 | it's widely regarded as one of the best games of all time |
Colton
03.11.23 | it's just so popular that as it ages and people have played it for hours and hours, you start to hear more and more complaints |
DocSportello
03.11.23 | I had a blast with this game but after about 50 hours I started to resent the over abundance of brief shrine puzzles, esp the ones with motion control : ( |
Eakflanderyof
03.11.23 | The shrines are pretty lame and borderline cut and paste |
Gyromania
03.11.23 | Open world games just don't do it for me 90% of the time. They almost always have tons of useless space and are way too damned long. Witcher 3, Elden Ring, BotW, Red Dead 2 are incredible games tho. If Disco Elysium counts then that's #1, but it's more like an open-zone game. All the games I mentioned have those same problems too - RD2 is especially tedious at times, the main story way overstays its welcome, the missions are usually boring shooting galleries, etc - but throughout them all there's a good enough story, good enough mechanics, worlds, art styles and so on to save them. I can't rly go back and play any of the old Elder Scrolls games anymore, games like Xenoblade are total dogshit, Horizon is gorgeous and the combat isn't bad but the characters are so robotic and the story is so shit. I can't think of more than a handful of rly outstanding games in the genre |
DocSportello
03.11.23 | Disco Elysium is such a special game to me but I can't imagine even considering it as having 'open world' qualities even through the lens of influence |
Gyromania
03.11.23 | Yeah, like it's definitely under the category of point-and-click rpg, but it has that open world quality of being able to just kind of go anywhere and do anything you want and it has more freedom than like 99% of rpgs I've played. It shouldn't count tho if only because Revachol is so small |
DocSportello
03.11.23 | Definitely a very free RPG, I'll give ya that |
Gyromania
03.11.23 | Does Outer Wilds qualify? Because if so that's prob top 5 of the genre for me. |
DocSportello
03.11.23 | Outer Wilds is a bit genre defiant innit. prob some mix of puzzle/simulation |
Gyromania
03.11.23 | Hmmm yes a bit. I would call it an open world puzzle adventure mystery game! |
Eakflanderyof
03.11.23 | "games like Xenoblade are total dogshit"
Well I never! |
Eakflanderyof
03.11.23 | I will agree that open world games are done to death now and copy many features from each other. People really like exploring i guess but it can and usually does get old quick. I'd rather have an engaging story and open world usually takes away from being engrossed in the story |
Gyromania
03.11.23 | I'm playing Octopath Traveller atm and getting pretty fatigued about 15 hours in.
I def agree that exploring for the sake of it usually gets old fast. I absolutely love exploring in games but I want something meaningful waiting. Elden Ring does a great job of rewarding exploration with cool new areas, optional bosses, new gear etc |
nol
03.12.23 | It’s literally impossible to talk about this game without it turning into a meta “do open world games actually suck?” discussion. And the only answer that matters is two words: it depends. |
PunkerBlast
03.12.23 | Gyromania, try Chained Echoes it's really good. Something about Octopath Traveler was just off putting to me from what I heard. It looks beautiful but all the stories were really disjointed and I dunno I just never felt like I had to try it for myself. |
PotsyTater
03.12.23 | The dialogue and story telling in octopath traveller was fucking pitiful. Ruined the game. |
PunkerBlast
03.12.23 | Apparently Octopath Traveler 2 was more of the same. I don't want to dog on a game series too much I haven't played but it just seems like I had more options than something Square put out just because oh wow it's Square. There are so many indie rpgs out there too like well Chained Echoes that one just oddly or not because it is sweet got really popular. It's basically the Stardew Valley on indie games for a old-school console rpg. |
Dunpeal
03.12.23 | Leisure Suit Larry is where it's at guys, go check it |
PotsyTater
03.12.23 | Tbf the art style is glorious and was the main selling factor for me rather than that it was square but yeah it sucks ass |
Storm In A Teacup
03.12.23 | Don't forget about Legend Of Legaia and Legend of Dragoon! |
PunkerBlast
03.12.23 | Suikoden is always is a classic even if three and four are a bit off or odd. Legend of Dragoon was alright but I don't think I could go back to that one now. It certainly had its moments but I never loved it. Additions got honestly rather annoying after awhile haha |
PotsyTater
03.12.23 | I have some very vague memories of legend of dragoon but couldn’t tell you a thing about it |
nol
03.13.23 | yo I just downloaded chained echoes the other day, haven’t tried yet but looks awesome. Chrono trigger vibes always welcome |
PunkerBlast
03.13.23 | Chained Echoes definitely has some influences from the 16 bit of rpgs and early 32 bit era but it really does do its own thing.
Feel kinda bad this Zelda hype topic turned into another rpg topic hah but hey it's Sputters! Lol. |
PitchforkArms
03.13.23 | Never played BOTW but it seems like the only Nintendo game I would really really like, so I'm probs gonna pick up both when I get wind in my sails to jump into something new. (resident nintendo non-enjoyer here) |
mkmusic1995
03.13.23 | Sput will sput. I'm happy to see others excited as well! |
PunkerBlast
03.16.23 | I don't think there is too much news out there about the latest Zelda. Isn't it supposed to be out soon? Is Nintendo usually this secretive about their games now? |
WatchItExplode
03.16.23 | Probably just going to be skyward sword in the breath of the wild engine |
PunkerBlast
03.16.23 | I can talk the NES Zeldas, Link's Awakening and I guess a little about Link to the Past and that's about it. Twilight Princess had a great vibe but I never made much progress in it. I dunno why I never played more Zelda games. Granted I didn't have many NES systems after the N64 (late in its life) but still. |
