PotsyTater 03.03.23	Will do ryus, Pheromone @pitchfork yeaa truly an overlooked 90s classic, such a shame it isn’t better known. I dropped $150 on a sealed copy of it over Christmas lmao. I wouldn’t say I’m an “expert” on vocal jazz but I love it and I grew up with it due to my grandma. I love Billie holiday but I’m only familiar with a few albums. I feel like at least familiarizing yourself a bit with Billie holiday is almost a prerequisite of being into classic hip hop haha

PitchforkArms 03.03.23	Dude totally agree on all fronts. Seeing as you're pretty familiar (or at least presumably familiar with lots of the more renowned tunes) I would highly recommend some of the earlier stuff where she accompanied some bigger composers + band leaders (mainly Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson). The Lady Day 1933-1944 compilations are full of it and it's outstanding - less moody blues/lounge feel more big and arrangement focus, even jump-blues sometimes. I think her rendition of Gershwin's "Summertime" is on there and that is EASILY my favorite version. ugh. Untouchable artist...
PitchforkArms 03.03.23	That's dope as hell. It's such a trance-y beat. And that track has so much good trade-off vocally - FU-Schnickens-esque or maybe even a little The Pharcyde but something about it is so singularly interesting and ear-catching. Also... basketball references are great.

Not totally my thing but I like it. Honestly my barometer on jazz generally is way different than this site - I lose a lot of interest post mid/late-50s.
PotsyTater 03.03.23	Hmm well I recently discovered her album The Rubáiyát of Dorothy Ashby which is a 1970 release but it is much different than what you are likely familiar with of her, very middle eastern inspired and psychedelic soul jazz but it’s been blowing my mind lately

PotsyTater 03.03.23	Nice. I listened to 16 many years ago when sput first introduced me to Kool keith via dr. Oct, but I didn’t appreciate it (or Keith in general) as much back then. Last year did a run of Kool Keith’s lesser known stuff and came to appreciate it a lot more. Also found some other Keith gems. Have you heard his album “Ultra - Big Time” with Nate Dogg or his band with Ice-T “Analog Brothers - Pimp to Eat”?

PotsyTater 03.04.23	The woes of being an old school hip hop fan in the steaming era 😢 I exclusively stream these days, haven’t pillaged an album in years because I mostly listen to music at work with my phone. It’s funny how torrenting used to be the ultimate convenience. But like, downloading and then transferring music to my phone? In the year of our lord 2023!? Haha. When I found that ULTRA album I listened to the incomplete version on Spotify and was about to dust off the ol’ soulseek for it but then saw Get Down coincidently announced a repress a couple days later, so I just ordered that instead. That’s kind of the work around I run with now, if it’s not complete on streaming it’s a priority for a physical purchase. Need to get The Extinction Agenda and Funcrusher Plus next but they are not cheap

Hyperion1001 03.04.23	my way of consuming music goes like this nowadays: -stream it, if I like it look to buy - look for it on bandcamp, usually buy it there - no bandcamp? Check for downloads on some other site. - no digital purchase? Look for a used copy that isn’t 2k on discogs - if there truly isn’t any way to buy it for a reasonable price, I’ll turn to slsk, but that’s only the very last resort. usually I can find it somewhere. Only a select few albums I’ve actually had to download in recent memory.

PitchforkArms 03.05.23	Pots, just so you know, most streaming services allow you to integrate local files in with your streaming library, which is really great of you REALLY want to access stuff via phone that isn’t on Spotify or Apple Music or whatever. Louis Jordan has had nearly all of his best stuff taken off of Spotify so a buddy and I have had to import some CDs to supplement.
