dreamo
I'm not sure if I'd call this a "micro-genre" or what, but this is a selection of emo/skramz with distinct elements of dream pop and/or "dreamy" qualities. These include echo-y clean guitars, reverb-y vocals, and a general enveloping quality beyond just thrashing it out. I've been really into this sound ever since I first heard I Wrote Haikus and I want to compile some stuff with similar qualities; recs welcome!! |
1 | | Majority Rule Emergency Numbers
Was revisiting this group today and thought about this list. Been wanting to make this for a while, and this album is one of the best examples of the sound I'm describing. Majority Rule was a really angry political skramz group with a strong emphasis on atmosphere over riffs, while still having some fucking sick angular riffs and screams. Their debut is more on the hardcore side while this one goes full dreamo.
Key Track: It's Too Late |
2 | | I Wrote Haikus About Cannibalism... iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook
Basically the first band that turned me onto this sound. Very naive and beautiful example of this sound, one of those records that truly feels like its own world, take it or leave it.
Key Track: 9 |
3 | | Gas Up Yr Hearse!/Coma Regalia Split
Referring specifically to the Coma Regalia side of this. One long song that envelopes you with a wave of regret and longing, everything I want out of this style.
Key Track: This One's For Rue |
4 | | Elliott Song in the Air
Much softer strain of this sound. Like an exact middle-ground between Sunny Day Real Estate and Trespassers William.
Key Track: Believe |
5 | | TOM BOIL EVERYTHING IS FINE AND THATS THE PROBLEM
Tons of echo-y guitars and evocative melodies over some super fucking passionate screaming. Hidden gem.
Key Track: TRICERATOPS |
6 | | A City Sorrow Built Ai
Pretty sure this was a user's album, but I can't remember who. Insanely beautiful mix of the aforementioned styles, one of the more texturally rich skramz albums I've heard.
Key Track: Hitam/Putih |
7 | | Saudade a long lifetime of dying slowly
Felt like this had the potential to be a modern classic of the genre when it came out. Gorgeous guitars underneath screams that sound like they're coming from another room; the way vocals in this genre should be mixed.
Key Track: unripe |
8 | | Roseate Wiltaway
Band that played my house once. Equal parts Have a Nice Life and the emo bands that surrounded us at the time. Some members went on to do Kissies!
Key Track: Hand On A Coffin |
9 | | City of Caterpillar Mystic Sisters
Think this may have actually inspired me to make this list. Their debut alluded to this sound a bit, but generally this new album pushes the dreamy elements to the forefront. Maybe that's just a sign of emo bands aging?
Key Track: Manchester |
10 | | Bucket Full Of Teeth I, II, III
Emoviolence a la Will Killingsworth, sorta has this format of "hardcore track-ambient track" that works surprisingly well.
Key Track: Horizar |
11 | | Hyosis Uologies
This is my old band! At the time of making this album, I was obsessed with most of the bands on this list and wanted to do a sort of "Unwound in space" thing.
Key Track: Kuntort |
