ryus takes on the canon

filling some gaps and oversights that i havent gotten around to before. FEEL FREE to leave recs of ANY sort in the comments and i will feel free to either heed them or ignore them (choose wisely). i'll be logging my progress hre
1The Birthday Party
Junk Yard

3.6/5 – not super familiar with nick cave overall, so i may be listening to some of his other stuff as this project continues. this one impressed me more than i thought it would, since i wasn't really a fan of "prayers on fire." i love when they go ape shit with stuff like "dead joe." the bluesier stuff isnt really for me but solid album
2The Mothers of Invention
Uncle Meat

3.9/5 – this is easily the best project from zappa that i've heard. all this time i thought i was looking for a more toned-down zappa, but little did i know i actually wanted him to go all out like he does on uncle mea.t the sheer breadth of instrumentation is super impressive here, and even aside from the terrific king kong suite, there's plenty of great stuff to love here. surprised and impressed
3Fred Neil
Fred Neil

3.7/5 - his voice is absolutely lovely. the opener is super enchanting and there are some decent tunes sprinkled throughout the tracklist beyond that as well. was not expecting the 8+ minute raga to round out the album but it was most welcome. pleasant, lowkey, and easy to jam.
4Leo Kottke
6 and 12 String Guitar

4.1/5 - this is a lot less contemplative than the american primitivism that i usually like, but it makes up for it by just being fun as shit. kottke is a fucking beast right from the outset. i love those harmonics on the opener. not as good as fahey but who is? still some incredible guitar music
5Jethro Tull
Aqualung

2.7/5 - i kinda hate hard rock of any variety, but the 70s stuff is usually more palatable. still, shit like "locomotive breath" does absolutely nothing for me. despite the hard rock stuff kinda sucking hard, some of the folkier moments are pleasant enough. this didnt prog hard enough which is not a sentence i was expecting to say before listening to this.
6Camel
Moonmadness

3.8 - this was way calmer than i expected. super gorgeous, particularly tracks 2 and 3. i've heard mirage but i think this one is even better. "chord change" is enough to reduce a man to tears. some of the prettiest prog rock i've heard
7Magazine
Real Life

3.8 - holy shit i was not prepared for that keyboard at all on the opener, i absolutely love the tone of it. "shot by both sides" gets all the praise and deservedly so, but the first half of this thing is essentially flawless. it loses some steam but its still great.
