Like a lot of free jazz this is a bit intimidating at first but after a while you start to recognize where he's going with it, you start noticing patterns that weren't immediately evident, you start to realize that there's more structure there than the term "free jazz" seems to imply.

The Seagulls of Kristiansund: Live at the Village Vanguard

The whole album is great, the version of "Snake Out" on here possibly being the best one I've heard. However, this record is all about the title track for me, which is the loveliest of piano jazz dirges. It's the musical equivalent of standing on a cold beach in late autumn or winter, staring at the sea and feeling melancholic.

An album that not only set the template for many ECM albums to come, but a precursor to many of the musical developments that would come to define ambient music - can you imagine a band like Stars Of The Lid existing without this?

31Jimmy Woods Sextet

6 ratings, 4.5/5

Conflict is the second of two '60s solo records on Contemporary, the first already reissued in a previous batch of limited edition releases. It’s tempting to judge Woods solely on the company he keeps - the likes of Andrew Hill, Elvin Jones, and Harold Land don’t have to be bothered with middling talent. However, Woods proves he can more than handle the responsibilities on an album consisting entirely of forward-thinking, advanced hard bop originals, which employ inventive call-and-response riffs. Elvin Jones contributes his trademark thunderous moments, while the rest of the sidemen, Hill and Carmell Jones in particular, are models of creative expression and Woods demonstrates his ability to handle the changes and aptly deserves the company he keeps.

It's adventurous hard bop, recorded at a time when bop had mostly passed its golden years and was beginning look restlessly for new directions, be it free, soul, or just a musician’s vision.
