Foals Albums - Ranked

In honor of the new album - might do a top 25 song list as well. All their Sputnik ratings are pretty close, so this should be fun.

Holy Fire

My hot take. From the explosive energy of Inhaler and Providence, to the subdued Out of the Woods and Stepson, to the dramatic and passionate Late Night and Milk & Black Spiders - this album perfectly encapsulates everything great about Foals. And that's all without mentioning their most popular song to date. There isn't a single bad track* on here and that's what makes it great.

Total Life Forever

A breakthrough album that integrates the catchy riffs of "Antidotes" into an atmospheric sound that often jumps between mesmerizing and dancey. The driving buildups and releases are incredible, most notably on Black Gold, After Glow and What Remains, giving the latter half of the album a majestic and grand feel. This is also the first time Yannis really steps up his vocals, paving the way for future great releases.

Antidotes

The grooviest, catchiest, most off-the-wall album Foals has released. It's fun unbridled energy headed by layered guitar riffs that bounce off each other, multiplying the punchy intensity. Every once a while the horns come blaring in, reminding you that Antidotes' intention is to party.

What Went Down

This album has grown on me a lot. They picked up right where "Holy Fire" left off, and produced a comprehensively sounding project that offers an enjoyable listen-through altogether. Loud, soft, catchy and emotional at certain times, it covers all the bases. With exceptions to A Knife In the Ocean and London Thunder, and maybe the title-track, there just isn't as many memorable takeaways. But still solid front-to-back.

Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost - Part 1

It feels like we're stepping down a tier with this release, but it's the strongest of the new albums. The off-beat drudgery of Exits somehow works, White Onions and On the Luna lets the fun loose, Syrups and Sunday offer the Foals' classic long-winding composures, In Degrees is a nice rock-disco fusion, and even the intro and closing tracks are solid. Plus the album artwork is fantastic - who doesn't like palm trees?

Life Is Yours

Time will tell if this album grows on me – but I’m not holding my breath. The blissful poppy songs suited for live performances may be needed after a global pandemic, but they certainly could’ve been executed better (see Antidotes). Also good lord, what are these choruses? At least we got Crest of the Wave out of it. And some new tour dates.

Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost - Part 2

I love Foals, but this really didn’t need to be a two-part album. Ask yourself if Neptune is really worthy of ten full minutes or if we needed multiple instrumental tracks on Parts 1 and 2. Seems like if they trimmed the fat and consolidated the two projects, we could’ve had another phenomenal Foals album. Minus The Runner and Into the Surf, this one gets lost in the discography. Easily my least played album.
